Wii Flash Memory is Next-Gen

Solid State refers to any type of storage that requires no moving parts. Hard drives, optical drives, and disk drives, all require moving parts; thus, they are not solid state. Examples of solid state storage would be flash memory and ROM, which typically use much less power than hard drives. The N64 was the last console to use Solid State.

In the computer world, there is a term called "Moore's Law". It's not really a law at all but an observation made a few decades ago that the press blew out of proportion (as they do with everything). This observation said something along the lines of "every 18 months, density of computer components doubles". For the past 30 years, this has been roughly true with hard disks, RAM, processors, and most other components.

Yet, over the past decade, one component has been doubling in density about every four months! This technology is flash memory (in NAND or another flavor). A year ago, we bought a 1GB SD card on sale at radio shack for $85US. Now they are practically giving them away. In 2000 we bought an 8MB MemoryStick for about $50US. Two years later we got a 256MB one cheaper.

thats one thing thats nex gen about the wii, and no the wii mote is not nex gen, the ps2 is more nex gen than the wii. (eye toy 2002) ; P

M_Prime6542d ago

yeah, but everyone that bought a wii got a wiimote

hardly anyone bought the eyetoy

Voiceofreason6542d ago

Key word being toy there. Also it didnt have anywhere near the support. Oh and lots of motion sensing gimmicks like Eyetoy have been around for a long time. Nintendo just gets credit for being the first to do it right. The new Eyetoy is better but most of the new tech in it didnt come from Sony so it could easily be on another console like Wii. Except the Wii comes with the camera built into the wii remote already, unlike the Eyetoy2 which cost extra. I see many disagrees in my future.

PoSTedUP6542d ago (Edited 6542d ago )

it cant be on another console cause sony has a patent on it. the gimmicks didnt do anything near what sony did with it(interactive games). it coasts extra but its there if you want the quality of nex gen in the previous gen (ps2 era). the wii mote has an infrared camera, not a video camera. the ps2 is more revolutionary than the wii. and the PS EYE (ps3 eye toy) is about to take it to a whole new level. peace.

P.S. i did my research ; )

P.S. again. what didnt the eye toy do right? sure the with the wii you move the magic wand and the things move on the screen. but thats a different concept than seeing your self on screen and interacting with the objects. theirs nothing wrong with the wii mote, its just not nex gen compared to the eye toy. the other gimmick were the game boy camera and the dreamcast camera, but they didnt do anything like the eye toy. wii mote- you move the controller. eye toy- you are the controller.

mindedone6542d ago

What the Wii did right was not its motion controls, but making motion controls almost a requirement. Why develop for the PSeye if you don't need to? The only thing "revolution"ary about the Wii's motion controls is the fact that it's bundled in every console purchase.

Voiceofreason6542d ago

"
P.S. i did my research ; ) " Sure you did. Too bad them holding a patent on Eyetoy means nothing. I wasnt referring to the design of the Eyetoy. I was talking about the technology inside it. Let me give you an example. The card game for Eyetoy uses technology not owned by Sony. So that could go to any other console. In fact before it was in the Eyetoy it was in a museum. BTW you must be talking about the design because you cant be seriously trying to say that Sony owns the patent on motion sensing camera's when the Wii remote is out now. Lastly, when they add something on the Eyetoy that makes its as capable as the Wii remote nunchuk combo, I will consider it next gen. You are trying to compare a camera to a camera built into a fully functional controller. Its kinda obvious which one has more potential for games. Anything on Eyetoy could be done on Wii but with more control options due to not being limited to just motion moves.

I know everyone on this site thinks Blu-ray is the future, but honestly being able to store 1,000+ title movie collection on postage stamp sized SD cards that would fit comfortably inside a shoebox with plenty of room to spare is a helluva lot more enticing to me.

Tomdc6542d ago

wow thats a kool possibility, not entirely sure on its likelyhood tho. This article is old btw...

Adamalicious6542d ago

The thing is that plastic disc-based media will always cost far far less than solid-state memory and will therefore be far more attractive as a means of delivering content. It would be great if games (aside from the DS) in particular came on solid-state memory again, but a game requiring 50 gigs of space would cost far too much to produce. The size of content will just keep going up and up, and I don't see the cost/size ratio of solid-state memory diminishing at such a rate that it will be a practical means of distribution - particularly for HD content.

darkshiz6542d ago

What the hell!?

People rather have a hard drive then flash memory cards.
Nintendo doesn't even let you store your games on it.

xplosneer6542d ago

The technology is next gen....maybe... And SSD drives may get cheaper and pass up HDD's later. EXCEPT Wii hard drives aren't removable in any form. So what does this prove? We got an up and coming technology that is currently inferior to current tech?

mindedone6542d ago (Edited 6542d ago )

Moore's law isn't a law? This article fails in not even understanding the scientific meaning of "law"

EDIT: can anyone tell me where this chart comes from? If their price comparisons, then they just can't be right.

Why the Wii is Such a Nostalgic System in 2026

The Wii is now a retro console. Let’s get nostalgic about an often maligned system.

Crazy to think the WII is to the Switch 2, as the NES was to the WII back then. 20 Year difference.

My wife asks me to bust it out (heh) everyone once in a while to play bowling and tennis with the kids. There was a ton of slop on it but some good stuff as well.

Smellsforfree14d ago

Wii was great but boy howdy did it cause Microsoft to go on a dark walk with the Kinect and the disastrous XBox One launch that they arguably never recovered from.

Loktai14d ago

Not nostalgic for me.. I was there.. anyone who wasnt a little kid realized it was a gamecube with shit tacked onto it, it was the "joke" system and was well below even the switch in terms of comparing it to the latest machines at the time. The machine was well loved by young people and "casual gamers" who now remember it 20 years on, or in most cases more of its sales came in the 15-20 years ago range not right at launch- but again its not nostalgic for people who were "gamers" then really, just for those who ended up with one in their house, the games , graphics, interface and online features were archaic already in 2006.
