I dont call Borderlands or Shadows of Mordor an rpg....
Borderlands is a shooter with a lot of rpg influence.
And I don't think we have seen enough of Shadows of Mordor to call it an rpg, looks more like assassins creed in Middle-Earth with the nemesis system.

It's a shame that these titles get labeled as rpg and that other lesser known ACTUAL rpg's get so few screentime.

JDW4340d ago

Agreed, Borderlands is so far away from being an actual RPG. Not saying it's a bad game.....just not an RPG.

Magicite4340d ago

IMO TOP 5 upcoming RPGs 2014(no particular order):

Tales of Xilia 2
Dragon Age Inquisition
Kingdom Hearts 2.5 HD Remix
Persona 5
Xenoblade Chronicles X

Not exactly sure if all gets all this year, but lets hope so.

3-4-54340d ago

Top 5 of anything is just lazy and weak.

Couldn't take the time for a top 10 or 20 ?

King-u-mad4340d ago (Edited 4340d ago )

@Whoever thinks borderlands isn't an RPG.

Instead of stating all of your opinions... why don't you all factually break down why it isn't an RPG? Because I honestly would like to know. Maybe I'm just terrible at the English language; I could not know what the words for the acronym RPG actually mean. Maybe someone could enlighten me... So that I can learn the proper way to interpret said words. Then... everyone would be able so see it if they read it and be enlightened along with me. That way... we ALL win because we now know the true meaning!

Because the last time I checked. An RPG is a Role Playing Game. Let's break this down even further.

What is a Role?
A role in it's most basic form is something that someone or something else acts as in a structured scenario.

What is Playing?
Playing in its most basic form is to be actively involved in a scenario for enjoyment.

What is a Game?
A game in its most basic form is something that involves playing.

So lets put these words together...

A Role Playing Game in its most basic form would be; Something that involves actively being in a scenario that which involves someone or something else acting as something in a structured scenario.

Dem basics doe...

Borderlands is a game that you play a role. Thus making it an Role Playing Game(RPG).

See what I did there?

I didn't post my opinion, I posted facts to structure why Borderlands is an RPG.

Why I did this?

We are unable to argue against facts while being right. Also to just give a little structure to the community, because in my opinion from what I have personally seen. People post their opinions as facts too much. This is not directly speaking to any one person, it is a broad statement. I just re-stated information we should all already know.

Also, you are probably wondering why i didn't include Shadows of Mordor in this post. I do not know enough information about the game to talk about it, so I won't.

styferion4340d ago (Edited 4340d ago )

"Borderlands is a game that you play a role. Thus making it an Role Playing Game(RPG)."

by that logic every single games in this planet would be an RPG. in CoD I play a role, in Tekken I play a role, in GTA I play a role, in Mario I play a role.. sorry I don't have enough space to list all games ever made on earth.

surely you have enough sense that when people say RPG games, you know what kind of games they mean, just like everyone have enough sense that what they post are opinions and not facts, especially on a top 5 articles where everyone have their own top 5..

and no, if I have to put Borderlands to a genre I wouldn't put it in RPG but shooter, however if I'm asked if Borderlands have RPG elements then yes it is.

also in case you don't understand, the people above protested not because Borderlands isn't an RPG but because the article is about top 5 RPG and they THINK, careful here, think indicates opinion, lmao, there are other games far more deserving to be put on top 5 upcoming ROLE PLAYING GAME genre.

King-u-mad4340d ago

"by that logic every single games in this planet would be an RPG"

Yes all games are RPG's that is a fact based on the meaning of the words.

They aren't rpg's with the features that you feel make an RPG an RPG... Borderlands is an RPG period. And to break it down further. Borderlands is an RPG with Shooter elements not the other way around. The (your definition) "RPG" features of the game do not depend on the shooting elements of the game. In fact the shooting aspect of the game depends on the "RPG" features of the game. Shooting is the gameplay, RPG is its description. It is an RPG where you shoot things. It has everything your definition of RPG's has. Story, Characters, Character Progression, Decision making, Items, etc... all of those FEATURES. key word: Features... key word: Features...... To say an RPG is anything but what it is by definition is redundant. Everything else that is added on to the actual meaning are features... Final Fantasy is an RPG where you have characters that have their own story's but they come together under a common goal and they go through many hardships to overcome those obstacles. The games feature, Leveling, Items, Skills, etc... It's a fantasy world styled RPG. You can ask the dev's they will tell you the same thing... When they describe the game to you they will say something a long the lines of "Final Fantasy is (insert whatever here) styled RPG." You ask an indy developer about their game they will say "(Main Title) (Features) (Genre)" That is how our language works, that is how it is period.

Now to give another example. Since you are arguing against fact... Which I already said "we cannot argue against fact while being right...".

King-u-mad4340d ago

This is how the English language works when describing something.

Look at that sentence. Read it Well. Read the words for what they actually are...

If I were to just say "This is how" You wouldn't be able to read that sentence and understand it for what it really is. Why? Because you don't have the full message. We read and understand from end to start. Not start to end. Now let's flip it around after you have already received the full message.

You see the message like this.

"This": Ok something is about to be said about something.

Followed by "is": now you know the what ever "this" is, is something that is current and on going.

Followed by "how": Now you know that whatever "this is" has an explination.

Followed by "the": Now you know whatever "this" is indeed something.

Followed by "English": Now you know "this" is something pertaining to English.

Followed by "language": Now you know "This" is the English language that is about to be explained with its current and ongoing information.

Followed by "works": Now you know what is going to be explained about "English Language" involves how it operates.

Followed by "When": Now you know whatever is going to be explained about how the English language operates relates to something else.

Followed by "describing": Now you know what is going to be explained about how English language operates relates to qualities of something else.

Followed by "something": Now you know what is going to be explained about how English language operates relates to qualities of whatever something may be.

Followed by ".": Now you know the message is over and that "how the English language works when describing something." is going to be explained.

That is literally how it is supposed to be interpreted. Period... No other way.

King-u-mad4340d ago

How that pertains to this situation?

Role Playing Game is meant to be interpreted as...

"Something that involves actively being in a scenario that which involves someone or something else acting as something in a structured scenario."

It is just how it is. It will never be different in accordance to the English language, because that is how it was created.

If you are to use the language, use it correctly. Or as correctly as you can. Do not try to spin it to make your opinions as fact.

Like the statement "Borderlands is not an RPG." That is completely incorrect.

Just like "if I have to put Borderlands to a genre I wouldn't put it in RPG"

You are entitled to your opinion. You Can have it. It is yours. It does not mean it is right though. Your opinion is factually wrong. Everyone has opinions that are wrong. But we CAN have them, they are ours and no one else's.

"surely you have enough sense that when people say RPG games, you know what kind of games they mean"

See that's the thing, I do know what they are talking about. I also know they are saying it wrong.

Instead of saying: "Borderlands is not an RPG.", "if I have to put Borderlands to a genre I wouldn't put it in RPG", "Borderlands is so far away from being an actual RPG.", "Boarderlands is a first person shooter.", "Borderlands is a shooter with a lot of rpg influence."

What should be said:

"Borderlands is not an RPG like the RPG's that I feel it should be like."

Why?

That is a pure opinion and it is not wrong nor right. Complete ultimatum and undeniable.

King-u-mad4340d ago

"the people above protested not because Borderlands isn't an RPG but because the article is about top 5 RPG and they THINK, careful here, think indicates opinion, lmao,"

Another false input. This is the message that started this.

"I dont call Borderlands or Shadows of Mordor an rpg....
Borderlands is a shooter with a lot of rpg influence.
And I don't think we have seen enough of Shadows of Mordor to call it an rpg, looks more like assassins creed in Middle-Earth with the nemesis system.

It's a shame that these titles get labeled as rpg and that other lesser known ACTUAL rpg's get so few screentime."

Now to break it down.

He said: "I dont call Borderlands or Shadows of Mordor an rpg...."

That's fine that's his opinion, it isn't correct, but he's entitled to feel however he wants. This isn't why I posted...

"Borderlands is a shooter with a lot of rpg influence."

After stating his opinion, he couldn't help but try to enforce some type of law behind it. By stating incorrect information.

He declared Borderlands a shooter. Period. That is what it is in his deceleration.

I would go on about the Shadows of Mordor, but I don't know too much about it, so like an intelligent person should do... I will not speak on something I don't really know.

So there goes the whole opinion garbage... out the window. As soon as someone declares (he is not the only one I don't mean to single him out, a lot of people do it.) something. It is no longer an opinion that they are trying to express... They are in a stating a fact. But if it's incorrect... They are stating their opinion as fact.

I actually am really waiting for FF15 and Xenoblade Chronicles X!!! I don't really consider SoM an true RPG, but an action game with RPG elements

styferion4340d ago

seriously, Borderlands and Shadows of Mordor but no Persona 5?

lonelyplayer4340d ago

Where are bloodborne and lords of the fallen?

yeahright24340d ago

Wouldn't both of those fall under the action/adventure category?

yeahright24340d ago

Shadow of mordor kinda screams action adventure with maybe some hack and slash.
Boarderlands is a first person shooter. I'm sorry but very few people that I've met consider adding "rpg elements" the equivalent of the game being an rpg.
I'm sure they'll be great games, they're just being categorized incorrectly here.

The actor who portrayed Zoltan Chivay in The Witcher series of games has died

Alexander Morton, the Scottish actor probably best known for starring in British comedy drama Monarch of the Glen - but known to me for being the hilariously foul-mouthed dwarf Zoltan Chivay in The Witcher 2 and The Witcher 3 - has died aged 81.

Cause they play NBA2k26, COD and gamepass

3x less sales than Playstation.
3x less consoles sold than Playstation.

Per captita, it averages out that the same number of users are buying CDP games regardless of platform, no?

Bathyj71d ago

The exact same or possibly more because a series S, initial investment and effort to Port to Xbox consoles for a third of the return.

Simply not worth it

LMGk71d ago

“ Simply not worth it”

And yet, basically every game comes to Xbox.

NotoriousWhiz70d ago (Edited 70d ago )

A third is a pretty big number to be honest. Like would you rather make 15 million or 20 million? That's the difference that a third makes.

GamingSinceForever71d ago

Hey it’s ok. They are really impressed with XBOx’s new CEO so exclusivity is on the way. 😂

Loktai71d ago

Ok but I mean be logical ... modern PC, Switch, PS4 PS5 then you have XBOX, of all of those XBOX is probably only 10 percent... I mean, what do you expect? 10 percent increase in sales is still nothing to sneeze at, remember - this is CD projekt red and they sell a lot of software. 10 percent of their sales is probably what most studios DREAM of selling .... just playing devils advocate..... its easy to say LOL haha XBOX.... but.. I mean we know what it is at this point. I havent bought on since my xbox one X and before that I only used other peoples xboxes since the OG XBOX and stick with PC and Playstation and switch OLED, but .. I mean.... theres nothing WRONG with an xbox considering its just not the best - but they work fine. make no mistake.
