Playstation 3 Solid State Drive Upgrade Report

Gamespot writes: "Laptop hard drives, like the one found in the PlayStation 3, take up little physical space. However, going smaller generally requires compromises. Performance takes a backseat, because manufacturers design the drives primarily for lower power consumption and heat emission. Sony likely wanted to make a smaller console and had to settle for using a space-saving laptop drive. That means we're stuck with a slow drive, and the console reminds us of it every time we install or load up and play a game. To speed things up a bit we could replace the 5,400rpm stock hard drive with an incrementally faster 7,200rpm drive. But that's the easy way out. We'd rather go the Tool Time way and slap in a next-generation solid state drive (SSD). Traditional hard drives have motors and platters that spin and move, and both of those devices take up power and generate heat. SSDs have no moving parts whatsoever--they're based entirely on NAND flash memory like the kind used in memory cards and USB storage devices. SSDs use very little power, emit far less heat, are completely silent, and provide excellent performance--if you can afford them."

"we're stuck with a slow drive, and the console reminds us of it every time we install or load up and play a game." Jesus this guy ever booted up a ps3? Mines still got the factory 'slow' drive and boots faster than my top of the shelf desktop... and bumping up the drive speed wont improve that by any measurable amount... games load fine its quiet efficient and easy to upgrade.
Saying anything else makes me question your motives harping on the ps3 non stop like gamespots mission in life is to try and stop the black tidal wave sweeping the world. Cnet's not gonna take your bias forever at least not if it wants to retain any semblance of impartiality....

I swear they write this crud jus to stir things up so they can stand back and say look at the rampant fanbois froth...
Sic Sarju Shah hope they paying you well for writing this drivel too bad it cost you your credibility. Like working at gamespunk wasnt bad enough.

I don't really understand the point of the article

rbanke6586d ago

There is alot of things flawed with what they are saying.

"That means we're stuck with a slow drive, and the console reminds us of it every time we install"

SSD's write slower than normal hard drives. It's reading that is faster from an SSD

The only reason people spend money on an SSD over a traditional hard drive, is size for portability (why does home console require portability?), power savings for battery use (your console is plugged into the wall), and to a very minor degree, heat (some ssd's actually create MORE heat than a standard drive).

The only reason to put an SSD in your ps3 (or home computer for that matter) is just to say you did it. There is nothing to justify the cost.

SafeRat6586d ago

And reliabilty - that's one of the main reasons for interest in Solid State Drives.

Can't say I really notice a difference. Might be a few secs faster here and there but yeah I doubt if a normal person would really notice any performance gains. I'd recommend anyone looking to upgrade their Ps3 drive just go for the biggest size they can afford and not worry about drive speed.

Booting up the system does not have much to do with the speed of the hd..... it deals more with how the OS is designed....

There is NOT much to the ps3 os... IT loads up quite fast thus demonstrating LESS overhead vs a windows OS

My old athlon 700 loads just as fast as my opteron system with faster HD.

cyclindk6586d ago

Sorry, but no. The faster your hard drive and memory the faster your system will boot up.

Rageanitus6586d ago

I agree that ram has alot to do with booting up speed, but I really cant see the difference when it comes to hard drive speed....

Through my experience the speed of the HD is not a means to an end

The only time I do notice that you do need a faster HD is when your loading massive ammounts of textures and level data in a game, but as for OS loading up I dont really see much improvement.

MorganX6586d ago

Every bit of code, every driver, every application, every icon, image, sound, has to be read from the HD when booting. Obviously, the faster you can get it from slow HD to memory, the faster your system will boot.

shazam6586d ago

the speed of the HDD will make little to no difference on the
PS3 because the OS is stored in a flash chip on the motherboard.

as for a PC, additional hard drive speed can give a significant decrease in boot time.

guys, dont buy this thing, it's way too expensive for 'power save' and 'heat generated'. your PS3 is extremely good at eliminating heat and keeping cool. And since when is your PS3 too 'noisy"...

you do NOT need to buy this 400 dollar hard-drive with little benefit (the graph shows a longer install time as well). just stick with the original drive for the next few years.

I wonder how much microsoft paid gamespot to write this one.

now the next few days all what we will see posted on n4g is hard drive speeds of ps3 vs 360

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle51d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments

"Gaming’s Biggest Fighting Franchise"

Press X to (seriously) doubt.

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

And then MK1 killed it again.
