Video Games helped get me through some dark dark times. 20 years ago I was in a near fatal car accident. Broke my neck in 3 places, collapsed lung, aneurysm etc etc. I barely survived, but what's worse was that I was attending one of the top art colleges in the States at that time.... and I was taken out, unable to finish, even to this day. Mounting debts, and my dreams shattered... I was thrust into a very dark place for many years. I wanted nothing more than to die for most of my 20s... even tried, and failed...

I still remember the days of laying in a hospital bed donated to my parent's house for months on end playing games, a halo brace bolted to my head. It's all I would do besides sleep, bc it's all I could do. If I didn't have the escapism of games, I'm not sure what I would have done.

Life got better though, now married w 2 kids and a career. Some of you guys will hit unexpected tragic events like this, and it's alright to "escape". Just don't forget to live again. I'm happy to have found my balance, and will never stop gaming as long as I live. I'm introducing my 2 little ones to gaming now and love every minute of it.

I'm happy to acknowledge how much games helped me escape that dark place I was at for years. For everyone fighting this battle, I am with you and understand.

I can only imagine how cathartic, therapeutic it would have been to have had VR during those beginning years! I did find out how great PSVR was for escapism during Covid lockdowns though!

I do like how this article talks about communities, how building friendships w seemingly random strangers w shared passion can help. I got into clan matches on Unreal Tournament and Quake 3, made a lot of friends during that time. This was right before PS2 and OG XBox first came out, so I was somewhere between jrpgs on PS1 (which were incredible escapism too!) and PC MP gaming. It's actually where the first iteration of my OtterX name started!

So glad to hear games helped you and your ok now.

Thank you @autobotdan, I appreciate it. Things are certainly better, but we'll always have new and different struggles. It's always good to escape for a while and get your mind off things, engross yourself in another world and experience.

Why isn't it helping thegamer or kotaku then?

I was in a near death accident with a crazy drunk driver back in 2010 that knocked me into a coma and i had small brain damage. I still feel the effects of that 2010 accident in 2023. Video games have helped me think better and focus better everyday since. One of the best medicines

Probably the best console of any generation 😎👌

Gardenia1505d ago

PS1 and PS2 era, gaming was really special back then.

_Decadent_Descent1505d ago

It was all throughout the '90s really.

SierraGuy1504d ago (Edited 1504d ago )

I truly believe Driver paved the way for modern GTA. At the time GTA was still a top down driving game 🤣.

I remember seeing Driver (only one copy) sitting on the shelf at blockbuster and renting it. Needless to say I was blown away...the reflections off the chrome bumper off the car in that gif up above...I remember thinking 'is this real?' ...it still holds up today.

Ended up buying it after renting it twice.

The '90s were the best... none of this rinse and repeat bs.

Agreed. I think Sony came so out if left field with this machine, that every major game maker had no choice but to take notice/react. It moved the industry forward so much on so many levels.

Tetsujin1505d ago

I do agree with the majority of the list. Here's some games the site forgot to add:

Einhander
Street Fighter Alpha 3
Tekken 3
Rival Schools

LiViNgLeGaCY1504d ago

Einhander is my favorite shoot 'em up of all time!

Nintentional1504d ago

I want it so bad but it’s really high in $$ these days 😕

Nintentional1504d ago (Edited 1504d ago )

Rival Schools tho? 😍

I really loved Xmen vs Street Fighter, Fighting Force, Driver 2, Soul Reaver, Spider-Man, and Pacman World on there too. Also, Jet moto, Lunar 2, Wipeout, Tomba, Klonoa, … there’s just too many amazing games on this console. To this day if you give me the choice between a brand new PS5, or a PS1 with a stack of minty fresh, complete in box games, I would take the PS1 all day.

Tetsujin1502d ago

The reason I left the crossover fighting games is due to the Saturn versions had the actual modes through the 4 MB expansion. Granted the games were Japan only, and a Pro Action Replay was needed, they were as close to the arcade versions. Even the load times were so minimal they almost didn't exist.

I'd also want to add Fighters Megamix needs a return on current gen to show how to properly have a cross over fighting game with various characters so Smash Bros has some actual competition.

_Decadent_Descent1505d ago

FF7 is on the list. It's practically guaranteed on any PS1 best games list.

Muigi1504d ago

Lol I know I just wanted to put my two cents in.

darthv721504d ago

No legend of dragoon... fail list. j/k... for me personally I really enjoyed shmups like einhander, raystorm, raycrisis, and thunder force V. Strider 2 and klonoa as well. There are so many great PS1 games that it can be pretty tough to really nail a proper best of. Especially with everyone having different tastes.

Tzuno1504d ago

Gaming today doesn't deliver the same vibes as the original ps1 or 2, even snes

LiViNgLeGaCY1504d ago

Those 3 consoles you mentioned are pretty much tied for my favorite consoles ever.
