The question is more like, why aren't people buying an Xbox One? It's not like you can only have one console. I know plenty of people who can afford both an Xbox One and a PS4, but simply despise the Xbox One. For what reason? My guess is because, Microsoft has made themselves look like the bad guy last year. Now I find it nearly impossible for Microsoft to catch up with Sony. Not that I am saying the PS4 won the this gen, however, the Xbox One is receiving a lot of hate still.
From what I've seen so far:

-Microsoft continuously gets more criticism than Sony.

-Microsoft hasn't been pro-consumer for the last several years until recently.

-The Xbox One exclusives gets downplayed more than PS4 and even Wii U exclusives.

2. No DRM when they announced it.
3. It was cheaper than the Xbox One at launch.
4. Sony history of supporting their consoles.
5. No 180s which increases confidence in the product.

Just my theory on why the PS4 is selling so well.

Mmm once the public hear something like the E3 stuff that has been changed it dont usually change in the publics mind. I get people asking me all the time if the xbone really wont have used games and needs internet, coupled with the higher price it had and now that PS4 is nearing that 10 million units sold through mark, its reached a tipping point in market share where everyones friend has the PS4. Lastly I think sony is just flat out out spending xbone on advertising.

Because, in my opinion, PS4 is better.

Almost the same exact games and better hardware, it was also cheaper at first meaning that people that want to play with early adopters will get a ps4. Let's not kid ourselves with exclusives, most people are buying multi-platform games and are going to buy the machine they see as a better value.

Speaking personally, it goes back to before the xb1 was even announced.

I always felt that MS gave up on gamers for the last 3 years of the xb360 producing a few tired exclusive titles and garbage kinect games. Once they announced the xb1 it seemed like they were continuing down that route with the focus so firmly on kinect and tv.

This was a huge turn off for me, even before all the PR disasters and 180s and it has left a bad taste in my mouth. I now feel like they are saying what ever it takes to lure people like me back but its too late, I have no interest in upgrading my rather dusty 360.

Its a shame as there are a few exclusives that I like the look of, mainly Dead Rising 3 from the current crop (loved that series on my xb360) and the machine itself looks quite cool too.

My final personal reason is that I am 39 now and have a long, long relationship with Playstation and so do feel more loyalty to that brand as they have always delivered for me when I think back to all the amazing games I have played on Sony system. Brand loyalty should never be under estimated in my opinion.

Simple because the PS4 has the better exclusives coming in the next year (my opinion). It also does multiplatform games better for the most part (again my opinion).

Considering the Xbox One wasn't $399 until June I would have to say price is a huge factor. Hardware differences aside price really has been a huge part of the deciding factor for many I know who bought PS4's first.

One reason for me is the Japanese are very respectful when it comes to privacy "NSA" and the fact that they try and keep there word when it comes to games development.

My personal reasons... PS4 has better hardware, is better designed, has more developer support, has worldwide appeal meaning more diverse games, and Sony's reputation for supporting their systems for a long long time with quality exclusives.

This is a back hand complement from Phil. First off the small countries that the PS4 are released in can't compare to the NA sales. The PS4 sold 1m in 24hrs. It was only released in NA and Canada. Meanwhile the xbone sold 1m consoles in 24hrs but it was released in 13 markets.

Xbone will release in the 29 countries soon and it won't change a thing. Xbone could have released in more markets. M$ just decided to release in the stronger markets, because they thought they could get the jump on Sony. Only thing is Sony is dominating in the markets that M$ dominated in last gen. M$ dominated in NA last gen and they still ended up in last place.

The cheaper price comment is BS. Phil please explain why the PS3 sold faster than the 360 at a higher price. The Playstation brand is stronger, and more consumers trust Sony over M$.

Sony has been doing everything right till now, and their support for their consoles is well known.

Ms vision is not my cup of tea - most important - their support is much weaker in the long term.

Honestly, I am not longer certain myself. From my perspective, as having been so anti-Xbox One (in terms of what it was offering and the price point at launch) NOW after all the changes and the price-reduction/Kinect removal, the X1 is MORE appealing than ever.

Though I remain mostly uninterested in it and have a quite low opinion of Microsoft's business practices and track record.

I am somewhat surprised it isn't doing better. Public perception too negative perhaps. But ultimately, some big flashy games should sell ANY console, especially when the price ain't too shabby any more.

My thoughts

Micro needs to use the coming holiday as a "Re-Launch," that's for sure.

When xbox came out I heard sales clerk at best buy tell consumers that the X1 has a greater failure rate * which it doesn* the sony defense force and how insane/passionate sonys fan base is selling consoles. My friend bought a ps4 from the hype and regrets it now. Sold it for an X1. Gave sony exclusives a chance and overall just figured he misses xbox exclusives and xbox live too much. Sony's brand name is huge across Europe. That is the biggest reason why. Xbox One might edge out ps4 in N.A. , but in Europe it won't even be close.

Me personally, bad experiences with 360, Im sure Im not the only one. Thats why rather than trust MS now, I got a PS4 and a Wii U (on sale) as my 2nd next gen console. Again, Im sure Im not the only one. Many have been burned and jumped the MS ship like me.

Cuz Jaisus! It's funny how both sides claim to have superior exclusives. Personal preferences vary from person to person, that is why they are PERSONAL. For me the most anticipated game atm is The Witcher 3. Not any exclusive. For this year games it was tlou, untill it was announced that mp will be censored in eu, and gta5.and fąrcry4

There are potentially a whole host of reasons. Maybe it's the price point of the PS4. Maybe it's the power, though historically the most powerful console has never sold the most units. Maybe the XBOX One's early DRM fiasco did this. Could be the region availability,launch titles, games announced, PlayStation Plus, etc.

A big, oft-unmentioned reason could be that gamers from the old days see the PS4 as the true successor to the PS1/PS2 era. Sony has made deliberate strides to suggest this console is for the gamers in a way the PS1 and PS2 were. NOT saying the PS3 wasn't (it was a great console--personal favorite of last generation), but I found the PS3 lacking if and only if compared to its predecessors.

Either way, let's not get ahead of ourselves yet. Sure, PlayStation 4 has the lead now and it *could* stay that way, but always remember that a console can completely turn around. PS3 was touted as a "supercomputer" by Kutaragi, lacked multitasking, had a very slow blu-ray drive, the network was pitiable in the beginning, it suffered a games drought, it was expensive, had worse multiplatform ports, the asymmetrical architecture caused problems for developers, financially AND developmentally. Despite all of that, it became the global leader in sales for HD consoles last generation. It was beaten pretty badly in North America, but overall, it ended up outselling the XBOX 360.

It has to be remembered that the Xbox One is actually selling decently considering that it was released in fewer countries than the PS4. And it's the first Xbox console to be doing well in Japan.

So before I say why Sony's selling more, I'll say why the Xbox One is doing relatively well in the eye of all the negativity.

It's doing relatively well because it's physically very well made, extremely more so than past Xboxes. It's quieter than the PS4, it's solid, you get a far better headset with the Xbox One than with the PS4, although the Xbox One controller does have its critics for requiring batteries it is massively comfortable to hold. And it would give me some pleasure to have the understated Xbox One in my house as opposed to the slanted, cod-modernism of the PS4. Some people have really gone overboard in how 'good' the design of the PS4 is - it's like they're doing art class at junior school - part of them is thinking 'ooh those looks all science fiction'. They have cliched minds about 'the future' looks like and Sony has taken advantage of that.

Plus Xbox One has some decent-looking exclusives lined up in Sunset Overdrive, Quantum Break, perhaps D4.
OK, perhaps Sony will have the edge on story-based games in general as they always do. But the Xbox One line up is not bad.

So now why is the PS4 selling more than the Xbox One? Well it's obvious..

The original Kinect was essentially Microsoft's answer to why they didn't have more exclusive AAA games in the last few years of the Xbox360. Sony were knocking out Uncharted 2, 3 , The Last of Us, Journey, Papo and Yo, The Unfinished Swan.

Sony and Microsoft gamers noticing that online play was free on the PS3.

Design choices like the battery-less PS3 controller.

The technical edge of the PS4 over the XboxOne. It matters to some extent when 2 companies are now both long standing in gaming.

The 'story' of Microsoft forcing the Kinect on people and trying to introduce policies that not everyone agreed with.

But mostly it is what Microsoft didn't do and Sony did do. Something as simple as the share button and the touch pad on the PS4 taps in to that 'Wii-fun' kind of party gaming market even if used in more hardcore games. And the openness and humour of Sony's execs.

Things have changed now. Phil Spencer is in charge and he says all the right things including praising Sony and Nintendo.

The Xbox One is unlikely to sell as much as the PS4. The Xbox never has. But it will sell many, many millions by the end of the generation, perhaps somewhere between the original Xbox and the Xbox360 but perhaps far closer to what the Xbox360 sold than what the Xbox sold. When you've got Sony as an opponent, that's the best that you can hope for.

Sony has really nailed their marketing and adjusted it based on gamer's feelings and Microsoft's actions...

They took advantage of gamer's feelings about DRM and always online. Then, they successfully re-marketed existing Indie's into consoles. Then, they took advantage of the game resolution differences in multi-platform games.

They have been riding those key points so far this generation. It will be interesting to see where they go next as MS seems to have adjusted much like the PS3 did last generation and now we are in a period where both companies are striving to make core gamers happy.

I'd put a lot of it down to the dreadful X1 Reveal, Microsoft were far too arrogant, just how Sony were with the PS3 launch. Gamers don't like restrictions and thats what M$ was offering, whereas Sony seemed humble in contrast.

Once the gaming media had both machines it was obviously apparent which was better, PS4 offered Developer friendly interface (something the PS3 was lacking), the ability to self-publish so the Indies ofc jumped on board.

Plus the fact it was a much more affordable yet with more power, it's an obvious choice for gamers. Microsoft has some fantastic franchises tho, and the reversing of a lot of the original policies seems to be helping along with the price cut.

I personally own all three major machines along with a pretty beefy PC, for the sheer fact that I'd hate to miss out on titles such as Halo, Mario Kart, Uncharted and Starcraft etc

As best as I can tell the initial massive sales of the X1 were mainly hardcore Xbox fans, people planning on getting both (but ps4 was too hard to find so they got the X1 first). While the ps4 had those as well, they also have all the regular buyers it seems. The ones waiting on a certain game or games to come out before they buy the system
