Gearbox 'scared' by Borderlands 3

The idea of Borderlands 3 'scares' Gearbox president Randy Pitchford, who believes that the game would have to be "so crazy and so big" that he's not sure his studio would be able to deliver on expectation.

I have to agree with him. While Borderlands 1 was a risky move by their part, luckily it did bring the success and a huge following.

Borderlands 2 improved on their great formula, but what could they do with BL3?

I'd personally like to see them take a decent break and put their efforts toward something else. Learn some new techniques in terms of game play and graphics, gather some really great experience and release a new Borderlands.

Zichu4329d ago

I totally agree, for a new Borderlands, I would like an expansive world without loading times. One that transitions between areas smoothly and doesn't look out of place with many unique enemies, quests and such.

I'm actually glad that they are thinking about this and not just following through and turning into some cash cow that pumps out something that gets too big.

I haven't played Saints Row, but for each game that was released, it looked like they kept on pushing the craziness of the franchise, but pushed it that bit too much and now they are probably stuck on what to do next.

kratoz12094329d ago

I liked the hub areas because more.places have variety.

PONTIAC08G8GT4329d ago (Edited 4329d ago )

In all honesty, BL2 wasn't that much different then BL1.

BL1 had characters with abilities and a skill tree. BL2 has new character and new abilities, but same concept as the first. Weapons basically were the same from BL1 and BL2. New world to play in. When you think about it, did BL2 do anything drastically different then BL1? You can play online with a friend, loot guns, and do quests.

I love the BL series, but the 3rd one would have to be different then the first two and really do something different. Loot system needs to be overhauled, leveling up and experience could be changed, a lot less back tracking through areas you've been to 100 times, maybe increase the players online from 4 to 6, a better use for money and iridium, better variety of vehicles, and maybe a more in depth character customization rather than clothing colors.

vickers5004329d ago

"When you think about it, did BL2 do anything drastically different then BL1?"

Yes, it added a story and some of the most memorable characters this gen(handsome jack, tiny tina), and one of the funniest stories this gen.

In terms of gameplay, it wasn't radically different, but it introduced a lot more depth to gameplay in regards to skills and the new slag type changed gameplay up a bit, added a new level of support.

If you really delved into the gameplay, and are a huge fan of the franchise, you can notice all the small little changes that make a big difference to the more hardcore player, while the more casual fan of the game might not notice much of a difference. Kind of like how my friend sees a huge difference in Dark Souls and Dark Souls 2, while to me, it looks all basically the same.

But I do agree BL needs an overhaul in some areas. Definitely in terms of loot drops. I went through like two playthroughs before I found a single legendary gun, while I found at least 3 or 4 in my first Borderlands 1 playthrough (granted two of them were mediocre).

CyrusLemont4329d ago

*Ahem*

-Have your own spaceship with its own loot upgrades and living areas you can transition to seamlessly out of your cockpit. You can also display weapons.

-Customisation and loot for everything, armour for legs, pants etc.

-Seamlessly land on asteroids (low gravity gameplay callback to pre-sequel) and fight strange aliens or bounty hunters.

-Visit vault planets(BL2 continuation)

-Some waterworld planets and have boats/submarines or something.

TL;DR version: Star Citizen crossed with Borderlands = Borderlands 3

Boom.

Zombro4329d ago

Remaster bl2 would be sweet

thehobbyist4329d ago (Edited 4329d ago )

No, they're already making the pre-sequel game. They don't need a remaster. You want a prettier looking Borderlands 2? Get a PC and turn on PhysX

fenome4329d ago (Edited 4329d ago )

@Razputin

Have you seen the trailer for the new game Battleborn their making?

They just announced it the other day. It definitely has a Borderlands vibe to it (the robot guy totally reminds of Sir Hammerlock). I need to see some actual gameplay, but I'm definitely keeping my eye on this one.

I can't wait for BL3, BL1 was the best so far (my opinion) Number 1 DLC was certainly better then number two, but number two had a lot more weapons and missions. So either way I think they could do a good job of Bl3

showtimefolks4329d ago

Matt666

I couldn't agree more man 1000%. Borderlands 1 was so much better than borderlands 2, yet Borderlands 1 was a simpler game. Gearbox made improvemnets but few things they did wrong and i mean really really wrong

the loot rewarding system in borderlands 2 is broken, for you to get excellent weapons/shields, you have to A:either hack your save or B:beat one boss 30 times and still hope you get something decent

Borderlands 1 rewarded you every few levels, the weapons you got felt good and rewarded.

sad thing is people just look at borderlands 2 and automatically assume its the better game, No doubt it made huge improvements in almost every aspect. But it wasn't as much fun()because of loot)

Also i believe borderlands 3 is in development. Borderlands 2 is one of the highest selling titles for 2K. Why would they release any info on borderlands 3 now when a new borderlands game is being released this fall

gearbox have 2-3 different teams working on 2 plus projects at a time

mcarsehat4329d ago

we already have borderlands 3, it's called Destiny

devwan4329d ago (Edited 4329d ago )

To be fair to mcarsehat, he's getting a lot of disagrees but he's on point. Destiny contains a lot of content, a subset of which is very much in the same vein as the Borderlands games.

Destiny is something which the next installment of Borderlands will be compared with for obvious reasons. That in itself is no doubt a scary prospect for Gearbox, as anyone who played the non-PvP parts of the Destiny Alpha can attest to. The nickname "Bungielands" didn't appear without reason.

NightStalker334329d ago

Problem with the comparison is that Destiny is focused on a much larger world based on online interactions, more customization, and more realistic visuals.

Borderlands has the humor and couch co-op down better though, thanks to skill sets.

mcarsehat4328d ago

People are reacting to my comment (disagreeing basically) because they think i am being spiteful towards Bungie, like i am accusing the company of ripping off Gearbox's co-op title.
The contrary really, if there is any similarity between the two games it is there on purpose, there is even a video that shows us the inspirations for Destiny. The head of Bungie states and i quote "Borderlands was a BIG inspiration for the creation of Destiny."

I am just letting people know the obvious in a facetious way :P

deathtok4329d ago

I hadn't seen that trailer before, thanks for sharing.

chaosx4329d ago

Wow that doesn't even look like the same game

Razjin4329d ago

Yes I would like for them to do this I mean they can still make it borderlands by using the original design because the only thing that brought me into borderlands was the characters but the environments were dull with no detail, music for raid bosses were re-use over for different raid bosses.....plus the raid bosses didn't seem to epic which only would require no skill if you found the right spot. please do give melee characters an actual melee skill no a hologram that does little to nothing when use. I lost faith in gearbox because they drop the ball on number 2 because they were successful with the fist but we'll see in due time.

fOrlOnhOpe574328d ago

I look at that trailer quite often and think what might have been.

Damn, the Fallout tactic but reversed..

Inverno642d ago

I am glad the movie is bombin, can we stop making horrible adaptations now?

ChronoJoe641d ago

There have been some good adaptations recently though. I think the Gran Turismo movie is really good and The Last of Us and Fallout TV shows are great too.

If they're going to try, some of them are going to fall short. That's just inevitable. If anything we should encourage more effort so that they learn more about what makes some of these work, while others don't. Honestly I think Borderlands should have been a hit, but I think it would have been much better as an animated show akin to the League of Legends TV show on Netflix.

Inverno641d ago

Yea but the good to bad ratio still leans more to the bad. All the ones you pointed out have been pretty great, can't wait for season 2 of all those shows. With that said, you can't "fall short" unless it's on purpose, in this case it's Borderlands. These characters, the world, the lore is/are fleshed out, there's a ton of source material, there are 7 games!

Kosic642d ago (Edited 642d ago )

But BL3 is the worst one in the series....should do #2 and experience Handsome Jack

Michiel1989642d ago

there was no actor handsome enough available to play Jack

DustMan642d ago

Nah. Tiny TIna's Wonderland is the worst in my opinion. I enjoyed 3 more than the "pre-sequel" and Tiny Tina's Wonderland.

Dudeson642d ago

Agreed, at least 3 felt like borderlands, gameplay was great, bosses were interesting. Wonderlands was just a turn in the wrong direction, the idea seemed great, but playing through the game just didn't feel like borderlands to me. Also dlc scam.

porkChop642d ago (Edited 642d ago )

My issue with TTW is that it's supposedly a new IP in the Borderlands universe, not just a Borderlands game. Yet it plays and feels just like Borderlands with some magic tacked on. For every cool new idea there's a handful of ideas just rehashed from Borderlands. They really didn't do enough to make it feel like its own thing. It's still just an FPS with guns, except the guns are magical now. Why not focus instead on crazy melee weapons, bows, and magic/spells instead?

Lighter9642d ago

I'd say the pre-sequel because of the low gravity. That was horrible.

porkChop642d ago

In terms of gameplay BL3 is the strongest in the series. It's the narrative that really lets that game down.

ChronoJoe641d ago

Eh...

The story is definitely worse but there's more to these games than that. Gameplay, loot, endgame and build variety is definitely better in 3. I think they did a great job with the game, some of the DLC is fantastic too.

Kosic641d ago

I agree with people are saying. There's sole really good ideas in the games followed by some odd choices. I loved Bl2 , and I liked the presequel because it tries to explain Handsome Jack's downfall (YouTube game theory handsome jack).

Also PreSeq, has this really cool team play where talents could help pick your friends up from bleeding out. Athena throwing her shield if it bounces of a player they are picked up from dying. Head shots Aith the sniper chick etc.

BL3, I cannot get past the annoying social media influences, it's meant to be funny, it's just unbearable. Gameplay feels solid though. But I've not made it past lvl 20 ish on 3 tries. The story does not interest me, the classes are poor and talents feel bland.

gold_drake641d ago

i didnt like 3s sotry villains, like at all.

but i dont think any of the borderlands mainline games were "bad". i nejoyed all of them

but im not part of the community and play them mostly with my friends or alone.

there are worse games rly.

Like they said...a bad publicity is still a publicity

jznrpg642d ago

I totally forgot there was a movie coming out. I’m not a big fan of adaptations mainly because most of them suck and they take away from me playing video games. I didn’t get into Borderlands 3 game. 1 was my favorite 2 was pretty good but a third with more of the same didn’t interest me much to begin with.
