GameStop's planned involvement with game development would be a disaster

Dealspwn: "Make no mistake, though, this isn't about customers, it's about GameStop attempting to exert its will over the industry to a greater degree. The company already has a foothold in the media with GameInformer, it's big enough in the States that it could legitimately destroy a game release if it told publishers to co-operate or face not being stocked, and as long as this is allowed to continue, the future of the industry will continue to be held to ransom by retailers and businesspeople."

No one, from what I can tell not even the staff. Unfortunately though the old independent game stores died out and I have to use gamestop to fill my second hand needs.

If older digital releases could match in price then it would be ok, since ps4 came out ps3 games have been massive cheap at gamestop. I don't think I could get any games as cheaply on the playstation network.

choujij4339d ago

I prefer to use Craigslist and Kijiji for buying, selling and trading used stuff. I always avoid GameStop (EBgames in Canada) whenever possible.

KonsoruMasuta4339d ago (Edited 4339d ago )

Digital can be way overpriced sometimes.

Here is a comparison.

Price for a digital copy of Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate on XboxLive:

$40

Price for a BRAND NEW (Not used) copy at Gamestop:

$20

Price for a Digital Version of Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy:

$60

Price for a BRAND NEW copy at GameStop:

$50

There are more examples of this, but I think you get the idea.

I actually really like Gamestop, been going there since the late 90's to be honest.

In 15 + years I've only had 1 bad experience and it wasn't even that bad.

* Go to same store as much as possible, so staff can know you. They will be more willing to hook you up and help you out if they recognize you.

* Have the intelligence to undetstand that your not getting $50 for your used game. It's just not happening...Anywhere! DEAL WITH IT. (unless it's retro)

* Wait until the trade in deals of +40% or +50% towards purchase.

Basically if you were going to get $20, you get an extra $10.

Extra 10% on EVERYTHING used for Powerup Pro.
^ IT's $15 and you get a year subscription to Game Informer.

Your basically buying the magazine sub, and getting 10% discount for free.

I don't work there....never would...I would end up hating games then. lol

80% of the negative Gamestop stuff is just trash and false info.

THAT BEING SAID!

This new BS they are trying to pull is exactly that....Some BS. There will be huge backlash when a certain group of gamers HAS to go buy it from Gamestop JUST to play the FULL game.

^ I have a problem with that.

uth114339d ago

"80% of the negative Gamestop stuff is just trash and false info"

My beef is that they open new titles and store the discs behind the counter. I expect new games to be sealed so I know I'm not getting ripped off.

3-4-54339d ago

They don't do it for a lot of games though. I have 4-5 copies of unopened games I've yet to play STILL in the plastic wrapping bought from Gamestop, but yea I used to not like that as well so I get where your coming from on that.

The thing is, if it's ever scratched or whatever you get to bring it back for a another new one, the only problem being the trip to and from.

* It's really the only store I can go into that I know is going to have games from 2004-2014 on DS,3DS,PSP,Vita,PS3,Xbox360,PS 4,XB1,Wii,WiiU,PC...

^ Not many stores have that much depth in terms of their gaming section.

* Also, they have "rare" games or old games you can't find in Best Buy, Target, Wal-Mart, ect...

It's not perfect, but if I want a game today, I KNOW I can check online to see if it's in stock and then head to the store and get it and play it TODAY. The only place you can really do that.

YES online stores can get you the same games and for cheaper, but you have to wait, so it's a matter of if your cool with waiting, then maybe something like amazon is a better option for you or ebay or whatever.

It's just another option for games, but a good one at that.

2pacalypsenow4339d ago (Edited 4339d ago )

Not since i started working at best buy i get my games cheaper there, i only buy GAmestop when a game i really want has extra pre order stuff.
Nothing wrong with gamestop tho

josephayal4339d ago

i love gamestop, I always love talking to the employees

Orpheo4339d ago

The problem with GameStop, for the most part, isn't their store employee; GameStop's hate derives from the instructions passed along by upper management.

Many of the employees are just victims of, on the one side, the ridiculous practices pushed on them by their corporate employers, and on the other side, by irate customers giving them a hard time for following those practices; practices they likely don't want to do but have absolutely no control over.

EVERYBODY LOVES GAMESTOP...everyone on this site fought for Gamestops lives a year ago because everyone loved USED GAMES they didnt want cheaper games they wanted to be able to trade their games in and have gamestop control the market....This is what the internet wanted and thats what it got

KonsoruMasuta4339d ago (Edited 4339d ago )

Microsoft said nothing about cheaper games.

However, they did say that they wanted me to check in every 24 hours and surrender my rights as a consumer. Sorry, but there is no justifying those policies they had.

kingdip904339d ago

Oh please, yes a lot of people hated the idea of the gaming industry treating games more like a service than a person's property and rightly so but people are also entitled to be upset by gamestops deplorable business practices also.

They are very few and far between but smaller game outlets exist and other alternatives to like amazon and ebay. The backlash against the "all digital" future had NOTHING to do with gamestop...

shinrock4339d ago

What he said^! Everyone got what they asked for. I haven't brought a disk since the x1's launch and don't paln on ever wlking into gamestop. again, and i worked their for 4 years, they r crooks.

Dirtnapstor4339d ago

I used to like GameStop but anymore the specials aren't so special and trade in values aren't worth it. Occasionally they'll run a good deal, few and far between.
They make their $$$ on the ill-advised not-so-smart shopper. I've see too many people pay for games at prices I knew could be beat.
They need to be more competitive nowadays to remain in business. In their case, something needs to change.

EinRobot4339d ago

Gamestop exists because of the gaming industry, not the other way around. This is just gamestop trying their best to remain relevant in an increasingly digital industry.

endzeitkind4339d ago

play games and sell it to gamestop STOP play games only once and never again STOP we need games that users plays only for the DLC STOP game STOP never bought games on gamestop STOP this is nuts STOP welcome to the futuer STOP game

Gamer Tries to Sell PS4 Pro to GameStop, Ends Up Being Asked to Pay the Store

A gamer tried to sell his PS4 Pro to GameStop USA and found out that he would actually have to pay the store.

Lionsguard440d ago

Gamestop: And I'm taking a huge risk here.

1Victor440d ago (Edited 440d ago )

Well there’s no stop like GameStop I’m surprised they didn’t go deeper into the hole with their USED cables and controllers prices.
Edit:
For those that don’t know if you go to trade a console you need it to be ready to go with all the controllers and cables if you don’t have them they ask you to buy them and deduct the price from the monetary appraised for the console

Gamingsince1981439d ago

That makes perfect sense really, why would you be selling your console without all the things it came with and needs to actually be used.

jznrpg440d ago (Edited 440d ago )

eBay.. not having anything for it makes it seems stolen though

Profchaos440d ago

Not always I've seen plenty of refurbished units go cheap because people have picked them up broken then repaired and onsold with no controller or cable. When they are this old many people just want to replace the main unit

jznrpg439d ago

I doubt those people are selling at GameStop

BeHunted440d ago (Edited 440d ago )

In the UK, eBay has removed selling fees, letting you list and sell any item for free.

andy85439d ago

Correct. This is why day one games cost me practically nothing now

Eonjay439d ago

They are gonna take that same console and sell it for $300.

Inverno440d ago

GameStop era ended in the teens. Let it die bruh.

S2Killinit439d ago

I love gamestop. I still shop there. I prefer buying a game from a game store than a department store.

Inverno439d ago

I preferred goin to Circuit City but that died out. Years back I'd go to Best Buy cause of Gamer Club, now Best Buy barely sells games and doesn't sell Blu-rays and looks dead most of the time. Same with GameStop, these stores look like a barren wasteland of Funko Pops and anime figures. These retail stores don't seem to care about pulling in customers. Those figurines are neat, I collect them too but they ain't pulling me into a GS. Rather than attracting gamers they've pay walled everything behind a subscription. As if they weren't already cheapskates back then with their trade ins.

FinalFantasyFanatic439d ago

I still go in there and browse, but never buy anything, the video game section is getting smaller and smaller, even the PS5/Series X/Switch game selection is getting tiny.

tiron8439d ago

I miss Best Buy's Gamer Club, I used to get pre-orders for like 20% off often with other discounts then get points I could trade into discount rebates. It was so good, getting day 1 games for like $30.

When they shut that down I stopped buying games day 1 almost completely.

raWfodog440d ago (Edited 440d ago )

I stopped going to GameStop when they no longer let me use my monthly $5 rewards points towards PS network cards.

Knightofelemia440d ago

Weird I live in Canada and the Gamestop near me says you need the console, controller, controller cord, and an HDMI cord before they will take a console on trade. And if the console shows signs of being opened they still won't take the machine. And if you upgrade the PS4 HDD from 500 gig to a 1TB they will count that machine as modified and label it as a 500 gig model. Better to just sell it on Facebook Marketplace.

clevernickname439d ago

I also live in Canada. I had a similar experience trading in an Xbox One S. Gamestop would give me a pittance for it, so I sold it on Marketplace for almost as much as the original selling price.

GameStop plans widespread store shutdowns after closing 300 locations last year

GameStop has announced plans to shut down stores across the country after closing 300 locations just last year.

Also giving you about $5.00 off for buying a used game is just bullshit. For example: https://www.gamestop.com/vi... New is $59.99, if your going to sell it for a used price it needs to be at least $10-$20 less. I hope GameStop just goes away.

OtterX527d ago

Same nonsense they were doing 20 years ago. 🙄

Time to take old yeller out behind the shed...

Grilla526d ago (Edited 526d ago )

One of the reasons I went digital. I used to trade games in back in the day when money was tighter. Trading a game in for 10-15$ isn’t worth the trouble. Especially when they turn around and sell it for almost full price.

RhinoGamer88527d ago

Not surprising, but sad. WooT is killing it with their game discounts...on new games.

raWfodog527d ago

This is just market forces adjusting for GameStop’s long-time practices of nickel and diming the consumer. I feel bad for the workers though. It’s not good that they have to lose their jobs over this.

P_Bomb527d ago

Unfortunate for the staff, but not unexpected.

46player527d ago

Not too surprising. Lots of people buying digital.

And GameStops trade in and resale pricing strategy is awful for customers. I will miss them when they are gone though.

Most I will miss being able to trade in a console, get a couple hundred towards the new model like PS5 to PS5 Pro.

SonyStyled527d ago

I’ll miss the midnight launch parties. Standing in line with strangers sharing our excitement about a video game. Digital took that from us. I wish younger audiences could experience how joyful it was

Kombatologist526d ago

I often think about times like that and how good we had it, before social media and smart phones gave way to a generation that expects instant gratification.
