PlayStation Plus: The problem with Plus

When PS Plus launched, there was a whole library of triple-A games available cheap, allowing Sony to approach publishers and offer a deal - what these deals entail isn't clear, but it's likely a cash sum and the promise of renewed exposure, opening up the market for potential DLC buyers.

With the PS4, Sony doesn't have the luxury of an established library of games. This has led to Sony snapping up indie games to give them away to subscribers on the day of launch. To many, this doesn't make up for the lack of triple-A games - especially after Driveclub was promised, before being pushed back.

My problem with plus is that it gives me to many games. For example, I have so many plus games for my Vita that I won't be able to play them all when I go on my month long vacation. What's worse is that my PS3s backlog of games just keeps growing and I dont even use the console anymore I might turn it on to play Dead Space 3 though.

Sharky2314332d ago

That's a good problem to have.

MasterCornholio4332d ago

Yeah it is. But its still a problem because I can't play them all. Thats my experience with PS+.

xX-StolenSoul-Xx4332d ago (Edited 4332d ago )

First I would like to mention that PS plus when it first released on PS3 we rarely ever had a AAA game, I been a member since day 1. It got good after a year or so.

Also the author mentions that it makes him not want to buy small games because they may go free. I won't live of "IF" because then I may never get the chance to play it. I don't mind supporting the developers, and If i can help by purchasing a game that caught my attention it's a win regardless.
I've been playing Trials Fusion for awhile now and I wouldn't regret the purchase even if it went free.

One of my favorite parts of plus on the ps3 was the epic discount on games at times and I bought a few downloaded games a month cause of it.

fr0sty4332d ago

This is the second article in as many days whining about PS+ not having AAA titles for PS4 yet... This is really getting old. Can't you armchair "journalists" come up with something original? At least try?

I miss the days when being a game journalist required more than a fundamental knowledge of how to write an essay (spelling and grammar not included) and an internet connection.

FamilyGuy4332d ago

DriveClub curiosity:

When it was first mentioned as being a PS Plus title it was meant to be one of those titles that stay in PS+ for a year or so. Now that Sony is having *every* game rotate out on a monthly basis (2 per hardware) is DriveClub still going to stay on the store once it's released or will it really only be there for a month?

I really doubt that it's stay only one month but it's an interesting thought. Will we still get two OTHER PS4 games per month while it's there or will we only have one rotating PS4 game in PS+?

first world problem. too many games to play.

DeadRabbits4332d ago

Too many games is like having to many women! I see my game collection as the Playboy mansion and I can pop into any room I want, When I Want!

BattleTorn4332d ago

A choice between too many games and too many women is one I'd wager you have never made.

;p

Clogmaster4332d ago

Same problem here.

Plugged my PS3 back in to play all the Plus game now.

gamerfan09094332d ago

There is no problem. It's a business model that succeeds based off of the publisher. Top publishers are just not going to give away games this early in a gen. I'll expect to see something like Knack hit PS+ before the end of the year or maybe Tomb Raider Definitive Edition.

marloc_x4332d ago (Edited 4332d ago )

With Sony's problem being this;

if I got a year on sale for 30 dollars, how do they sustain all those games we demand and the people who worked very hard to create them?
It is no surprise that multi player is behind a paywall now.

It's a shame Knack should be devalued fodder for my hard drive..

voodoochild3464332d ago

If I'm not mistaken, Sony gets the same amount regardless. It's the prerogative to sell them at a discount or not.

Mr-Dude4332d ago

Pfff... Another whine article about PS Plus and the PS4-content? Are these people for real? I mean do they have the IQ of a brick? The PS4 is 8 months old.. DO they expect AAA-games like water? Both systems (PS4 & X1) are new to the market. It's normal that the library is dry now...

Do some real journalism

3xkrazy4332d ago

Stop arguing that dumb reason. PS+ is mandatory for MP and we could care less about their crappy plus games. What's worst? Not a single AAA PS4 MP exclusive has been announced for PS4. Way to brainwashing all these kids with "free" games 75% of the population already bought. Shady tactics.

I'm fine with paying $10/year for MP, minus the other $30 for "free" games I will probably already own or have no intention of purchasing by the time it comes out on plus.

ScottyHoss4332d ago

You're forgetting the days before "Games With Gold", where that price was just for multiplayer (only got PS+ when I got PS4, have an Xbox 360 and PS3). But I agree, a cheaper PS- subscription for just multiplayer would be an excellent business idea.

BattleTorn4332d ago

We barely have enough AAA titles to BUY, let alone GIVE away!!

Death4332d ago

If the majority of people found the value in Plus, it would not have become mandatory on the PS4. Sony knew there wouldn't be enough content to make people want to pay for the service on the PS4 which is why the choice was taken away.

I've been a subscriber for quite some time. I have had more than enough time to play the games which were available. I haven't wanted to play or download them all though since some of them I consider to be shovelware or are games I already own.

dantesparda4332d ago

Why am i not surprised a fanboy like you would think that. Meanwhile i bet you think Live is SO worth it. All you fanboys are so fake and pathetic.

Death4332d ago

Enlighten me on how a fanboy like you thinks. You must believe it became mandatory because Sony thought people were too stupid to know how great it is on their own when given a choice. Personally, I subscribe to both because that is the fake kind of fanboy I am.

dantesparda4329d ago

Oh please fanboy, Sony made it mandatory cuz they saw they could get away with it thanks to MS precedence with Live. And you know that. So please dont come out here spewing your made up nonsense cuz you know what you're saying is bullcrap and it just makes you look stupid. And im not a fanboy kid, i dont cheerlead for any company, whereas you do. You are much more of a fanboy than i'll ever be.

These people aren't gamers. They sit in their offices all day playing smartphone games and troll gaming forums for stories. That's why every story these fools come up with is "What's wrong with" or "Who's winning" or "Industry Insider." This stuff gets old quick.

Mr Dude, try reading the article before making a comment,at least.

kirkules4332d ago

That's weird, because the article specifically states the problem isn't Plus. Btw, it's spelt "hence". Cheers xx

iistuii4332d ago

If your new to either the Xbox One or PS4, or just have those consoles your really only paying to play online. You may get thrown a few indie games, but I'd personally rather have it like last gen when I could chose to either have PS+ or still be able to play online for free. It's of course going to get better with time, but until it does, as I've only got a PS4, I'd rather not pay to be honest.

andy8520d ago

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Pergele19d ago

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla19d ago (Edited 19d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk19d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

Athlon10120d ago (Edited 20d ago )

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit19d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg19d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10119d ago (Edited 19d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14920d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.

CosmicTurtle33d ago

I think MS were and still are the richer company. They tried to acquire Sega back in the day (and considered doing so again more recently), they obviously bought exclusivity to Halo which was originally shown as a Mac title. I don’t think as a company MS can claim the moral high ground here. It’s a wilful lack of self awareness.

Of course Sony would try exactly the same if they had the resources, but when the PS2 dominated the industry was in a much healthier place with an abundance of great third parties.

This has been a depressing generation as far as first party decisions are concerned. The fact we are debating business plans rather than which game is better is a sad reflection of the state of things.

Darkseeker33d ago (Edited 33d ago )

There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.

S2Killinit33d ago

MS was definitely a bad influence on gaming.

raWfodog33d ago

I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.

I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.

Reaper22_33d ago (Edited 33d ago )

But first party studios aren't enough. They only make up a small portion of the industry. Without 3rd party there would be no industry for Microsoft or sony.Developing games take time and money and sometimes you gotta make moves to stay competitive.

raWfodog33d ago

Nah, I never said first-party was enough. I said it’s the ‘best way’ to drive gamers to your platform. 3rd-party is a free-for-all and there’s no guarantee that gamers will use your hardware to play the game. If you want to push your own software and/or hardware you need first-party, or at least exclusive deals with third-party studios.

SimpleDad33d ago

They Shure did a great job... 25 years later Xbox is dead.

Reaper22_33d ago

Then why be so emotional and continue to talk about it. Xbox will never die be ause it stays in so many people's head.

lodossrage33d ago

How can you even see him being "emotional" in that comment?

If anything, you're the emotional one, constantly trying to go at anyone that says anything against Microsoft. So when you call him emotional, it comes off as deflection

Everyone's Talking About DriveClub Again, PS4's Underappreciated Racer

In this day and age, it’s rare we experience a warm fuzzy feeling when we boot up X (formerly known as Twitter, of course).

But the past few days have been lovely: our feed is full of people talking about DriveClub again.

The discussion started when someone posted a clip of the game and its infamous rain effects. The caption reads: “Still can’t believe this is a 12 year old game.”

This was one I was hoping would have some kind of boost from the PS5. The devs locked that sucker so tight...

I play the PSVR one even though it doesn't look as good, because that one is 60fps.

fr0sty42d ago

To this day, there still hasn't been a game to pull off better rain effects.

Evolution Studios.. another waste of talent

fr0sty42d ago

I interviewed them twice back in my gaming journalist days... Once at E3 2006 and again on a podcast about a year later. Really nice folks.

fr0sty42d ago (Edited 42d ago )

The guy we interviewed both times' name was Simon, I can't remember his last name, it was 20 years ago, but he was a really nice guy, and was very passionate about his job. It broke my heart when I saw Sony shuttered Evolution. I do hope they bring some of those folks back, but I remember another studio ended up hiring most of them back in those days, and they've been releasing new games since under that studio... Codemasters, maybe? I forgot which....

But the amount of talent that Sony has shut down over the years, it's disturbing. Psygnosis, Evolution, Zipper... just those three studios produced some of the most innovative games that PlayStation has ever seen... and those games need to be brought back.

Agent7541d ago

Driveclub VR was graphically tragic.

maximusprime_43d ago

If they were to release that game on the PlayStation 5, there would be absolutely no need for a remaster or a remake. The whole appeal of the original game was that it consistently exceeded people's expectations.

fr0sty42d ago

Higher rendering res and textures, higher framerate, maybe toss in some global illumination/ray tracing, but other than that, they could keep every polygon the same and it would still look absolutely incredible as a current gen title.

Reaper22_42d ago

That game has good graphics but bad AI, though.

Agent7541d ago

The AI was what I'd call aggressive, but superb to play.

Jin_Sakai43d ago

Sony should reassemble the team and make Driveclub 2. Driveclub was so ahead of its time it’s crazy.

lodossrage43d ago (Edited 43d ago )

This is what I hate about gamers sometimes

There is a segment of gaming communities that always want an old game to come back. But when the game(s) were in their prime, nobody supported them or not enough people supported them. Driveclub, Killzone, Resistance, etc all fit that profile.

I want Driveclub, Killzone, Resistence, and etc all back too. But I say that as someone that bought into, played, and own those games.

Too many people like to talk but not put up the money to support when it's needed. I even lump two of my own personal friends into that. I remember how one of them constantly said "I always wanted to play the Resistance games", yet never made an effort to buy any of them. No way that's an isolated event.

IanTH42d ago (Edited 42d ago )

There are certainly games that fit that description, but I'm not sure these are a good fit:

- Driveclub infamously launched in a truly terrible state. It had a central focus on online & social features, and those were broken for about 6+ months before people could reliably play it as intended. It was so bad that the PS Plus Edition was delayed, along with its companion app. It also released less than a year after the PS4 launch, so it had to deal with a smaller total of launch PS4 owners to sell to, and Driveclub's rough launch certainly did it no favors.
- Resistance got 3 main console entries, and one handheld title for the PSP and PS Vita. Killzone got 5 main console entries across 3 generations, and one handheld title for PSP and PS Vita. This was also the era of millions of shooters, especially of the First Person variety, & genre fatigue was getting heavier by the year. So I feel these did pretty good at 5 and 7 titles respectively, pointing to enough people showing up for at least a while.

I'm not saying people don't exist who fit that criteria for these games, but I also don't think they were the primary issue. I think after a solid break from the IPs, as well as a lessening of shooter oversaturation, these titles could find healthy audiences if they came out with new entries at this point.

Agent7541d ago

Killzone on the PS4 had the graphics, but the gameplay was tragic, I only rated Killzone 3, although the first game on the PS2 was decent. The Getaway was another game Sony canned, the sequel was so bad. Plenty of games need a sequel, the likes of Ridge Racer, Wipeout, Project Gotham, Wave Race and F-Zero have been retired. The racing genre these days, I'm sick of Turismo and Forza due to the same tracks and any other clones.

robtion42d ago

I think the original Motorstorm was the game that convinced me to buy a ps3. Way ahead of its time.

Storm2342d ago

I played the sh*t out of MotorStorm 1 and 2. Incredible games.

darthv7242d ago

Pacific Rift was the best of the bunch for me.

badz14941d ago

Pacific Rift for me is still the best off-road racer ever made

Agent7541d ago

Surprised Sony didn't release a collectio, but all they seem to do these days is release God of War and Uncharted collections. It kills me that I no longer have a PS3, so a collection would be awesome.
