Naughty Dog Still Uses Old School Linux and Cygwin Command Line Tools; TLOU Panel Coming Next Week

At times old school tools are the best option to get the work done, or at least the good folks at Naughty Dog feel that way

Ha, good old naughty dog. These guys really need to teach some of the other development companies how to do it. On one side you have a company creating groundbreaking, award winning, graphical masterpieces using old school tech, and on the other you have a company using the latest in game development technology creating one of the most rehashed, saturated and overbearing franchises of all time, cod.

Sharingan_no_Kakashi4340d ago

So true. I was reading the history of Naughty Dog written by Colin Moriarty of IGN. It's a truly inspirational story. Back when Jason and Andy were heading up the team they would always be solving problems that they're younger newer guys said would be impossible. They were so used to tools being handed to them they didn't know how to make they're own tools. That's that old school ingenuity. Glad they passed the skills on to Evan and Christophe.

kingPoS4339d ago (Edited 4339d ago )

Wow! Naughty Dog sound a lot like the "Borg" (in a good way) picking up talent left right, and adding the collective hive mind. yeah... ND do kinda sound just like them. lol

@John,

I was with you, until you mentioned CoD. Have you seen EA/Ubisoft's games? Or is it just cool to reach and mention the most popular in hopes of gaining agrees and bubbles?

SpinalRemains1384340d ago

Yes we've seen them.

COD sucks harder though.

johndoe112114340d ago

So because cod is the most popular that makes it good?? Your post just killed a couple of my brain cells. The reason I mentioned cod, obviously you seem to have a special place for it, is because, like I stated, it is one of the most rehashed, saturated and overbearing franchises of all time. The fact that it keeps loosing customers speaks volumes. The glitches, the bugs, the terrible lag, overpowered weapons, terribly designed maps and everything else that causes most of the cod community to scream and rage every year are the reasons it is dying and the sales keep getting worse and worse.I don't say anything fro bubbles, I say it because that is how I feel or think. just like I think right now i'll add you to my ignore list.

sinspirit4340d ago

I don't think people understand what you were saying. Clearly, CoD does NOT use the latest in any game development technology. They've been using the same engine for almost a decade, and any newer engines are pretty much the same.

But, to be fair BattleField is decent, other than the server issues, which EA has been having on basically every game launch in recent years.

OculusRift4340d ago

@Sin,
that is what I was trying to say.

My kitten died today, so mind is somewhere else right now.

johndoe112114339d ago

@sinspirit

http://www.escapistmagazine...

Wow, you sure showed me with your impeccable knowledge of the gaming industry and your brilliant analysis of cod development. So, what are you guys working on today on the multiplayer aspect? You guy's gonna add a dog in this game too?

sinspirit4339d ago (Edited 4339d ago )

@johndoe11211

Yes, you're talking about an unproven engine and an unreleased game in a franchise that has been bragged about for fish AI. You sure showed me.

Also, what's "new" for them isn't necessarily new for the industry. They hardly ever work on game engines. I'm not sure if you were trying to say that they were pushing any advancement in the industry, because so far there has only been more graphical effects for the new CoD, and that's it. Nothing impressive compared to the competition either.

Agent20094340d ago

Just because they use "old-school" commandline tools, doesn't mean they use old-school tech. Naughty Dog is actually using the most advanced technologies in the industry.

Kayant4340d ago

Command line tools are generally more powerful also because you get complete control compared to GUI based tools in general.

Eonjay4340d ago

During one of their conferences they explained alot of what they do on the programming side and on the management side. The CEO said people had asked him whether he wanted to give secrets away. He said we wasn't worried because:

"There is a difference between knowing the path and walking the path."

Neixus4340d ago

For people that don't know what they mean with panel:

It's basically ND talking about/ showing pictures about TLoU, most probably about the remastered edition. Which means that we maybe we'll get some gameplay / gameplay screenshots.

ginsunuva4340d ago

So old school bro. No one uses Linux anymore these days.
We build GUIs in Visual Basic.

Pricey4340d ago

I hope that's sarcasm right there.

ginsunuva4339d ago

Yeah, I thought it was obvious. But everyone on this site was apparently born yesterday.

Kayant4340d ago

"No one uses Linux" - Yh 1 billion people using Android say hello.... Most super computers want a chat as well....

Looool no one uses linux you can't be so wrong.

N311V4340d ago

It's used a lot in my line of work. GUIs are far too limited in functionality.

annus4339d ago

I can't believe you got so many disagrees with something that was so obviously sarcasm.

ginsunuva4339d ago

I even threw in the word "bro" in there to make sure no one could mistake it for seriousness.

Ex-Naughty Dog Dev: Big Studios Are 'Forced' to Hire Like Factories

Former Naughty Dog artist Gabriel Betancourt explains why the "sweet spot" for game teams is under 200 people and how AAA "factories" kill creativity.

There’s definitely some truth to this. When teams get too large, coordination starts to outweigh creativity—layers of approval, risk aversion, and tight deadlines can turn bold ideas into “safe” ones. Keeping a team under ~200 people sounds ideal for maintaining clear communication and a shared vision. That said, massive AAA projects also come with huge technical demands and expectations, so scaling up isn’t always avoidable. The real challenge is figuring out how to keep that small-team creativity alive inside big studio structures.

DarXyde33d ago

More than that, it's logistically untenable. Inevitably, when teams get too large, how do you keep tabs on accountability? I suspect this massive team size is a consequence of the perfectionism streak Naughty Dog has.

I wish we could have so many people working on something and it turns out great because I'm all for collaboration in spirit - the problem is too many people as part of the larger team and smaller units. Suppose for example that you have too many people in the art department; you will very often come up against fiercely competing visions for how things should look. That competitive vision will cause friction between team members, team doesn't work as a unit, the back and forth can further delay parts that the other departments are waiting for, etc etc.

A 200-person team says, to me, that we need to scale back game development. Even if it means we go back to PS2 era costs and scale, why not? Those games are still great fun, the budgets were in check, and you could literally break the 200-man team into like 10 20-man teams working on different projects.

Neil Druckmann Reveals He’s Working on an Unannounced Game at Naughty Dog

Neil Druckmann, the creative director of The Last of Us, is working on a new, unannounced game at Naughty Dog.

RaidenBlack369d ago

I know they've expertise in third person games.
But given the lack there of in PS catalog, I'd want the other project to be a narrative first person ND game.
Look, there are lots of 3rd person Sony games in variety of flavors. And ND is already doing intergalactic. And since they're pretty expert at gameplay and tech wise in whatever they do, they can easily venture a new genre and ship a first person game/shooter.

VenomUK369d ago

Hopefully the lead character is a boss babe who will challenge the patriarchy.

RaidenBlack369d ago

So, judging from the dislikes, hardcore Sony fans here don't like first person games, anymore?

arkard369d ago

Let naughty dog do what they are great at, 3rd person games

crazyCoconuts368d ago

I don't really have a big opinion on first vs third person perspective. That's one of the least important things to me when rating how much I like a game

Flewid638368d ago

Sounds horrible. The downvotes are right on this one.

badz149368d ago

I actually hate 1st person. very hard to associate with a character you only see their hands most of the time.

OtterX369d ago

funny thing is with failures like Concord and soon to be Marathon, Factions could have been Sony's guaranteed huge success with a shooter! I don't ever play online shooters anymore, but I would have come out of shooter retirement for a new Factions game.

RaidenBlack368d ago (Edited 368d ago )

{ coming from the above thread }
So PS Fellas hate first person games now? (Understandable)
But praise Killzone and Resistance series, as well?
And hope for a return of first party first person games? ~ but from where? insomniac is deep in marvel territory, guerilla is deep in aloy territory ... suckerP are not as big to undertake that change + dedicated to Ghost series
The only options are ND and Santa Monica, who are rumoured to be involved in parallel projects. ~ so take your pick.
And the other 'new' studios at Sony are not that hot right now with knee deep in live service fiasco

...Way of the Warrior 2: Electric Boogaloo

Amplitude369d ago

It’d be cool if they bought the Parappa licence and made Parappa 3 that’d be the real good timeline

Lightning77369d ago

Wait I thought they cancelled a game? Or did they announce another project?

https://wccftech.com/naught...

pwnmaster3000369d ago (Edited 369d ago )

I’m assuming it’s the unannounced game in the title you posted.

“Naughty Dog Reportedly Canceled a Single Player Game This Year, But Another Unannounced Game Is Still in the Works“

Lightning77369d ago

OK I gotcha. That makes sense.

jznrpg368d ago

Devs cancel games all the time early stages if it doesn’t turn out the way they envisioned it. We just don’t hear about every one of them.

Notellin368d ago

Yeah only a narcissist like Druckmann would announce a game this early that has a 99% chance of being cancelled.

badz149368d ago

so a 2028 release at the soonest

Lightning77368d ago (Edited 368d ago )

Some speculate it could be Uncharted spin off. It's already 3 years in production so yeah 2028 maybe 2027 at the absolute earliest but most likely 28 release.

Also to add. kojimas next game that's not OD is said to be 5 to 6 years out for PS. That metal gear inspired game. These games are just too far off it seems.

pwnmaster3000369d ago

This dude is busy.
So who is running intergalactic?

Knushwood Butt369d ago

'We have several directors on Intergalactic. I work with two game directors: Matthew Gallant and Kurt Margenau, [and] I have a co-writer in Clair Carré.'

pwnmaster3000368d ago (Edited 368d ago )

Okay you got me, I skimmed the article and video .
Thanks lol

vTuro24369d ago

Cuckmann is going to be Naughty Dog's downfall.

368d ago
itBourne368d ago

Going to be? The damage is already done lol.

Flewid638368d ago

Sunlight is good for you, I promise. lol

vTuro24368d ago

Damage has been done but it's not too late yet if they dump him now. Probably won't happen though. It's sad, honestly. We'll see what happens after Intergalactic. That game is going to have a huge impact one way or another.

StormSnooper368d ago (Edited 368d ago )

Yes because they didn’t make some of the greatest games. Right, we all just agree to live in your fantasy from now on.

Flewid638368d ago

yall say that about ever developer and then they end up becoming more successful lol

mkis007368d ago

Downfall? If anything he is a huge reason they are on the map! A few apes don't like the material hasn't stopped his games from being massive hits.

DarXyde368d ago

I have grievances with Druckmann, but he does deserve some benefit of the doubt. He's been in crucial roles at the company through all of their successes.

Maybe wait and see?
