im tripping out, i know a lot of people like to collect trophies why not just allow a trophy transfer to a new psn name? i mean i have like 4 psn names all free of course and sometimes i just make extra just to start over with stats on games or to plain ole troll someone.

How can someone "abuse" this process? lol...I mean if they want to continually pay to change their name, then who cares?...

How are you affected in ANY way if some other dude changes their PSN name every single day for $5?

I feel for people who picked shetty names at the beginning, Sony really needs to make this happen but figure out a way to avoid abuse like others have stated. I hope i will never have to change my screen name through the years ( PS5, PS6, PS7 ect. ), as i really love my screen name. Waited in a Cicuit City line in Daytona Beach FL for two days ( friend came up & held spot while i ran home & showered & grubbed each night ), just so i could secure that 60gig fatty that i'm typing this message on now, drive like a fool home & sign in as - you guessed it Scumdog.

Its worth 0$ to me as I actually thought about my PSN ID.

I don't know how their account system is coded, but usually, username and/or e-mail address wouldn't be the key. An ID would be the main key and username, e-mail are just there, it's data. So switching username should be the most simple thing to do, as easy as changing your credit card info.

I've always found this can't change username thing stupid. I would see the ability to change your username limited to only once a year though.

Metfanant & WackyVee both have a point, Metfanant for abuse of system - shouldn't matter to you if you don't know them, but if the system didn't automatically switch your friends now changed name & keep them on your friends list, it could be irksome with people asking you to frequently add new handles - i erase people from my friends list who do this all the time. Wacky is right, imo too it should be a cakewalk for them to allow this, is it that hard if so i was unaware.

I took PerfectChaos on PSN when i had a PS3 early on.. good thing i did, hate choosing names with numbers or what not because a name is already taken.

why the f even charge for a username change... sure let me keep the handle name but let me change my nickname for god sake , it's 2014 .. steam has been doing it for a long time and everyone seem to be happy about it

People apparently don't get the real reason why they ban user name changes, its to make it difficult to sell your account to other people as the other person not being able to change their id to something of their liking is a barrier

I would love to change my PSN ID, but according to Sony support its impossible due to our purchase history & download content being linked to that ID.

I would think it would be a matter of just changing it on the system :-/ guess they link content differently than MS do.

I think at least $5 or $10 dollars like Microsoft charge is fare. People only value something they have to pay for and being able to change it when ever they want for free will only lead to the system being abused. Saying that if Sony are making money from each time the name is changed then why should it really matter.

I lost 12 platinum's cos i wanted a Psn name change, my new account currently stands @ eight. Sort it out sony. hell even ps2 you could do it.... think you had the ability to do it 3 times per year or something to that affect, should bring it back.

If they do add this feature... The date the account was established, purchases, friends, everything, stays exactly the same. The only thing that changes is your PSN Name. Mine is Skarred and I'd like to change it. I've had that name since the day the PS3 launched. I don't care for it too much though.

Depends on how much Sony has to do with servers & records to be able to change it, got to be cost efficient.

It should be free the first time and then $10 after that. Everyone wins. You get your second chance and then pay for the next time if you continue to hate your user name. ^~^

Was 14 or 15 when I chose "one2thr" wanted something simple(To play online with my PSP), me and that username been through thick and thin. There have been times like hey "1, 2, Thur" that name stupid and having to respond its 1,2,3.... you genius

I know a few people that made different accounts and they're always still refered to as their original name. Same as me I'm always guns be called Uber or ube over the mic even if I have a different name so I couldn't give a rats ass about this name changing makarky. And I certainly wouldn't pay for the privalage either.. Dam straight rip off if u ask me.

Just call it PlayStation Online, pay your subscription and you get everything. All this gold, silver and bronze membership or whatever is nonsense. Same situation with Nintendo, pay your money and you get the lot. If Nintendo charged £19.99 or £24.99 for the lot, a lot more people would pay it. When you consider Nintendo tried Switch 2 games for £75 and failed, the cost of games these days, this online malarky should be free when PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X games are pushing £70+. You pay for the cost of running their online service is tosh.

They had probably wanted to do that all the way back to 2012 when they introduced the Sony Entertainment Network and the backlash forced them to keep the PSN name alive.

I knew this would happen. Now is the time for Microsoft strike back and send Sony back to only making TVs.

ANOTHER REASON DIGITAL ONLY SUCKS.

I have a sizable game collection that includes a lot hefty download files and takes a lot of time if you want to ever play a game rather than have it on tap. So, I actually have 3 PlayStation 4 consoles and PlayStation treats me like a criminal for my troubles. Why do I have 3 PS4 consoles? Because of the size of games and also functionality. My 1st Gen PS4 is for disc-based games, which is getting smaller because now I have digital backups and keep my games sealed. But, I also have a PS4 Slim which houses all my base PS4 games and VR. My PSVR hooks up to the slim for VR gaming as well. My PS4 Slim has an internal 2TB SSD and 4TB external mechanical HDD and both are beyond full. Then I have PS4 Pro that has a similar setup and is also full. My PS4 Pro has games on it that are optimized for PS4 (benefits that come from the PS Pro). Because size is so limited, this is what I have and when the Internet goes out or PSN goes down, I can't play any of my games. If I'm playing games on one room of the house on a PS4, and someone in the house wants to play on a separate PS4 at the same time, we get locked out. I pay for games, in my own house, and I'm treated like a thief. I have digital I buy and when physical media goes on sale at a low price, I then have my physical media, which remains sealed and turns into a savings account as well as throughout my gaming life, I've learned a lot about the value of games over time. The older they get, the more valuable they become.

So, yeah, I'm locked out. Can't play anything so I go to PS3 or Xbox or other consoles. What a croc

So I'm guessing if you paid premium dollars for that PS5 Pro bad boy, it is now a brick. This outage may be a good thing for gamers as it reminds everyone of the consequences of an all digital console that Sony is desperate for consumers to embrace.

I was unaffected by this because I know how to properly set up my PS5 as primary so that I don't need to be online just to use digitally purchased games. I feel bad for those with multiple PlayStation systems and since I don't have a Portal yet, I'm still not sure if access to PSN is really required after initial setup just to use a $200 remote peripheral, but I feel bad for those impacted by that as well and will just have to take everyone's word for it that Portal requires PSN.

In any case I'm vindicated again for buying physical games wherever possible. Yes, I might not be impacted because I only have one PS5 system that is cleared for true offline play, but all disc-based games I own are clear for offline play.

I thought it broke but I just had to restart it and now it said system software has an error.

I am a pc gamer these days and was warning about this for a while, now that games like god of war ragnarok /horizon zero dawn remastered require a psn sign in to play single player campaign, does anyone think this was a good idea or "cmon guys you already have to login to steam so whats the issue with another login ?" , well imagine you get a "verifying licenses message after paying 60$ for your games and waiting to play until the server is back, utter madness

The first time this happened to me was the rockstar launcher for rdr2 which I purchased legitimately, was having server issues or some crap that prevented me from logging in, I became a pirate that day 4 years back and played rdr2 when the legit copy did not work for hours.
Honestly ill just admit it today lol, ive been a pirate for the last 4 years, I own an external hard drives of 20tb each which holds around 1500 cracked games, basically I own 95% of all the games I ever wanted on this 20tb external hard drive, what I additionally did is get 5 portable external drives of 4tb each, so for 20tb of external portable ssd, I have made a copy of all my games as well in case my external hard drives ever dies + much higher speeds with ssd, so have a 2nd copy of 1500 games, the rate at which I finish my games is around 75 games in 1 year, so it will take me about 20 years to finish the 1500 games I have, probably dont need to buy games for a while which I still occasionally do , this was the exact kind of scenario I did this for, absolutely no login needed, 99% of the cracked games work without any tweaking.

It sucks that people that paid for ragnarok for example will have more issues that a pirate, insanity that I will never willingly accept, straight up piracy or ideally GOG games for the win, which is one company I absolutely support , no DRM crap and you get the actual games files, even sony put their main games like god of war 2018, horizon zero dawn, days gone, uncharted collection all on GOG, and I supported them by buying each of them, clearly sony is taking a different route now with this mandatory PC login crap, im sure the future games wont come on GOG as well, just horrible decisions they have been making lately, not sure what's up.
