PlayStation Magic Lab Talks Project Morpheus Development, Tech Demos & Consumer Release

VRFocus - Sony Computer Entertainment’s (SCE) Project Morpheus is getting around of late and at this month’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) a clutch of new demos were revealed for the PlayStation 4′s head-mounted display (HMD). Not all of the demos that PlayStation Magic Lab has created have yet been shown however, as is revealed in an interview with the studio’s Director, Richard Marks.

Sonys VR uses the move controllers & camera so it can track & what not. So, what does Oculus use? All I see is their headset & don't get how it tracks/works etc

I'll never buy into VR anyway, well not until they fit all that tech into a pair of sunglasses. They are ugly as fck but Morpheus definitively better looking than that monstrosity Oculus is creating

Oculus doesn't have any equivalent to the move, they are relying on other parties to come up with solutions. Morpheus, on the other hand, is working not only on the HMD, but on 3D positional audio and with the Move technology to track both the HMD and peripherals.

Oculus has admitted that Sony is ahead of the game on that front...but, then again, if it weren't for Oculus, Morpheus probably wouldn't be getting the amount of attention it is. I think there is room in the market for both products, myself.

Oculus is now using infrared LEDs that the camera uses to track head movement. It's a little more sophistaicated than Sony's camera that is using the colored orb on the controllers and Morpheus. The plus side for Move/PSEye is the camera can also dictate depth to a degree based on the orbs intensity as it moves in and out of the cameras field of view. The downside is you need adequate lighting for body tracking since it is basically looking at shadows when it sees what is connected to the orb of light.

Kinect would be better suited for both systems since it can do skeletal tracking and can be used in very low light conditions.

Are a bunch of games, some of which are nearly 10 years old not one being from 2026. Barely one from 2025.

I do like the irony of the closing paragraph though, "Why VR Adventure Games are Thriving". Really buddy?

mooreneco2125d ago

That’s because it’s his favourite VR adventure games thus far, a great game always a great game regardless of age - Half life 2/ Ocarina of time - are old but still among the greatest games of all time. The irony of it is several are from last year, depending on platform, have you even played VR?
