Could Gamepad Enhancements Boost System Sales?

Nintendo had less than stellar console sales before (Gamecube), but Wii U looked to be a sad sequel to the greatest console flop of them all: the Dreamcast.

A gamepad redesign and removing the multi touch screen wouldn't hurt!

imXify4363d ago

Holy cr*p I forgot my coffee this morning.

I meant adding a multi touch screen. I hate how on a resistive touch screen I have to press a button 2 or 3 times to get it right.

Neonridr4363d ago

lol, no worries. Multi-touch would be a nice addition for sure. It's not an absolute necessity however, since the gamepad has sticks and buttons to account for the lack of need for pinch zooming or touching multiple virtual buttons at once.

But it wouldn't kill the gamepad to have it either.

fatneal4363d ago

dude stop pretending you know what youre talking about.

imXify4363d ago

Dude just read what I said after, it's just a typo.

Everybody I've shown the Wii U to was like " OMG What is that? Is that the controller!?......That is Awesome. Let me try it! "

And then they love it.

I haven't met one person who picked up the controller, used it and was like " this sucks".

I know they are out there, but I'd be willing to be 9/10 people who use it are more than cool with it how it is.

BoneBone4363d ago

You've never played on a Wii U, have you! This comment is always a sure sign. A multi touch screen would add nothing to the Wii U just like it doesn't on the Vita. Multitouch is a 'thing' because they are 99.99999% of the time found on devices that don't have a means of alternative inputs, i.e. physical buttons and directional pads/sticks.

Think about it for 5 seconds.

Also, you couldn't have accurate stylus drawing if it was a multi-touch panel.

Try owning and using a Wii U before you draw up a list of what you do or don't like about it.

I think in selling wii u without game pad and lower price would boost sales. I would buy one.

The 10th Rider4363d ago

Totally, because removing one of the key features of the system which'll prevent you from playing half the games out is suuuuuchhhh a great idea. Not to mention you can already find one places for $200. They MIGHT pick up a few impulse buys, I think that's about it. The confusion in the market would be much worse.

I can see them now, all the articles about parents complaining they can't play Wii U games on their Wii U because they don't own a gamepad...That'd help Nintendo's image

InTheLab4362d ago

This type of smug attitude really bothers me. The biggest feature for the Wiiu is the biggest reason why parents are staying away from it.

My children really want a WiiU. They think that controller is cool and cant wait to jump in and be disappointed when they realize they have to share it. Most of you people hear are kids yourselves so you really don't understand what it is to tell you kid they have to switch off and that there's no way around it. It was a huge mistake for Nintendo to not give the consumer the option of buying a gamepad or at the very least, giving them the option to buy a second, which would be preferred....

The 10th Rider4362d ago

Maybe it is and maybe it isn't. No one I've played with has been disappointed with having to switch out.

Either way, there's not much they can do about it now. It's not a 'smug attitude', it's knowing that what's being asked for just isn't feasible. As I pointed out, a lot of games wouldn't be playable without the gamepad. It'd be a bad dose of extra confusion and bad press.

randomass1714363d ago

But without the Wii U gamepad the Wii U has no identity. The gamepad is more necessary for Wii U than Kinect is for Xbox One.

BoneBone4363d ago (Edited 4363d ago )

I don't know what's funnier, the fact that you want a console that doesn't come with a control pad, or that you can't afford the extra $50 for a Wii U. HAHAHAHA... Sad.

Dunban674363d ago

Which games do you HAVE to use the gamepad? I know there are several games in Nintendoland that need it and several others that use it well but I am trying to think which games are unplayable w out the game pad

DillyDilly4363d ago

This needs a range extender first

Dunban674363d ago

Me too - if they had made it w a better range and better batt life (among other things) from the start it would have helped the game pads reputation

It is like Nintendo committed to the game pad half way in the beginning and now are trying to catch up

talocaca4363d ago

For ME to buy it it would only take a gamepadless WiiU for 150...its hardly cutting edge so I imagine its doable.

I haven't had a Nintendo system since the NES but MK8 looks amazing!

GordonKnight4363d ago (Edited 4363d ago )

Why are you so against the gamepad?

Are you scared you'll play the Wii U more because of the convenience of the gamepad?

I've got the Wii U, PS4 & X1 and I play my Wii U the main most. The Gamepad is the reason for that.

seraphym884363d ago

I dont want to start some flame war, but i find it dissapointing that people still want a price drop for Wii U, or a gamepadless SKU. I understand that some people may not understand what the gamepad brings, however as many artcles have pointed out, Wii U has the best games. Were already looking at the cheapest current gen console, with the BEST game out now, and in the foreseeable future.

With XB1 i could see the problem, a less powerful console, with unwanted features, that was still the most expensive of the current gen consoles. Some people may say Wii U is 'last gen', even though its proven its anything but. PS3 couldnt touch MK8, nor Wonderfull 101. All this beeing said(or typed), i do think PS4 has the strongest price point, but Wii U is a close 2nd IMO. 250$ bucks for the current gen console with the most critically acclaimed games, all exclusive... a gamepad, a game, and a wii mote plus.

Sure, a gamepad improvement would be cool, but at the same price. Who knows though, Wii U may get another price drop this holiday.

U.S. patent examiner rejects Nintendo’s summoning characters patent as obvious: non-final ruling

The rejection is non-final (and even when such rejections are labeled as “final”, the process is far from over, given that there can be, at minimum, an appeal to the Federal Circuit).

Good, as they should! A game mechanic like that shouldn't be locked behind a patent, and Nintendo didn't invent it either.

PRIMORDUS66d ago (Edited 66d ago )

Nintendo wants to keep wasting money on bullshit lawsuits, real smart in this economy. They should put that money aside for other game projects. On the other hand, I don't care if they waste it all either, and they are screwed in the future maybe that will teach them a lesson.

Nintendo Suing U.S. Government Over Tariffs

The fact that you have ANY disagrees will forever baffle me. And to the (apparent) MAGA contingent that exists on this website, enjoy your 8-9 dollar gas.

AuraAbjure90d ago (Edited 90d ago )

Yes, they had better be pissed after Trump told them the way they rip off the USA is over.

EveryPlatformGamer92d ago

LOL I read this on gaff, will they refund the money back to the gamers? highly unlikely. Didn't they just raise prices and pass it onto the gamers? Only Nintendo would send out the Ninjas to the US government.

-Foxtrot91d ago

That’s what I was thinking, imagine them winning hypothetically, getting a s**t load of money back which they would have lost if they hadn’t raised their prices and it’s business as normal.

It would just mean people paid more for no reason since they got the money back anyway.

Outside_ofthe_Box91d ago (Edited 91d ago )

A lot of companies partially passed the cost to consumers instead of all of it. They would still have to at least pay that back to gamers, but we know that won't happen. What's also sad is that prices won't come back down after the initial hike caused by tariffs.

People didn't understand the full repercussions of tariffs. That alone should have cost him the presidency if people knew it was a permanent price hike for consumers

Inverno91d ago

The people should sue these companies for having to over pay cause of these tariffs.

Eonjay91d ago

Naw they should sue the government for forcing the tax to begin with. No one reasonably expects these companies to absorb the taxes. Many smaller companies tried and were shut down or faced to increase prices to try to maintain their business. The tariffs effect everyone.

Inverno90d ago

I meant it mostly as a joke cause we all know the costs of these tariffs were passed onto the consumer. But it's seems no matter how vocal we are here in the states our "representatives" don't seem to care enough to represent us. And things are about to get worse.

Killer2020UK90d ago

The companies were doing what the law required then to do, the tariffs however were illegally implemented. Usually it's criminals we punish, you seem to have different ideas 🤷‍♂️
