Sony Debunks ‘Project Morpheus Complete’ Rumours

Sony Computer Entertainment’s (SCE) Project Morpheus head-mounted display (HMD) continues to impress with an outing at this month’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) that showcased new software for the device, including Street Luge and a revised version of The Deep. Following this latest presentation of the hardware a story emerged suggesting that development on the hardware had been completed. Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) has since debunked this rumour, insisting the Project Morpheus is still a prototype.

I'm glad that Sony is still trying to perfect Morpheus before release!

Why are you talking to yourself?

Good, from what I've read there are still problems to work out, I was concerned when I read it was complete but now I'm a little more optimistic for the Morpheus future. Sony NEEDS to get this right the first time.

I never believed it was complete. I think Sony will be demoing prototypes through out the year at events like Gamescom and TGS and it won't be until E3 2015 when we'll see the final retail model. That's when I'm guessing Sony will announce Project Morpheus' PlayStation name and release date. From the sounds of things it's getting a lot of support so I look forward to seeing what content becomes available.

I'm looking forward to seeing what all will be available as well, I'm really excited for the prospect of VR horror games and maybe (hopefully) even some good use of VR in a 2D game. I think your right about Sony showing of the headset and showing of the finished product next year, it'll give them more feedback and enough time to make the final changes.

From what I recall it was Sony themselves that said the hardware was essentially complete and all they needed was a library of games to support it, which is why a bunch of devkits were shipped out. Now they are backtracking it seems. Interesting.

They still have a lot of refinement left to do. I am guessing they will go to OLED screens to eliminate the blurring that is plaguing the prototype, and I wouldn't be surprised to see them enhance the tracking in some fashion to eliminate the need for frequent recalibration.

For a prototype though, it's looking REALLY, REALLY good! I can't wait to buy the final version! Day one purchase for me.

Are a bunch of games, some of which are nearly 10 years old not one being from 2026. Barely one from 2025.

I do like the irony of the closing paragraph though, "Why VR Adventure Games are Thriving". Really buddy?

mooreneco2113d ago

That’s because it’s his favourite VR adventure games thus far, a great game always a great game regardless of age - Half life 2/ Ocarina of time - are old but still among the greatest games of all time. The irony of it is several are from last year, depending on platform, have you even played VR?
