PS3 games installs going overboard?

One of the advantages of PLAYSTATION 3 over its rivals is the inclusion of HDD. In other words, any PS3 sold will have some capacity of HDD in it, the smallest being 40GB in the current batch. 40GB for most of us is big enough to store many of your videos, music, pictures…….unless….we have to share it with something else, game installs. Go to the source for the rest of the article.

you can delete the old games, and re-install them when you want to play them.

Most games don't even install, uncharted, easily best looking console game to date, no install and NO LOADING AT ALL.

You see, it's just up to the dev's, some are lazy, others are bad. Other need more space to accomodate, the hours of HD gaming and footage/audio the have in place.

sonarus6559d ago

Wow. All of this triggered because of a 5GB install for a 50GB game...sigh

chasegamez6559d ago

your right
Installs are no problem
i have 200gb hd

sonarus6559d ago

Thats too bad...it cost me 90bucks to upgrade my hard drive to 160GB...maybe you should consider it

iamtehpwn6559d ago

The problem is that There is forced install. I just wanna pop my game in and play it. Uncharted was the best looking game on PS3 so far, it had no load times. So why can't other games follow suit?

decapitator6559d ago (Edited 6559d ago )

Articles about PS3 Installs and amount of GB require going overboard ? Yes, very much so.

To answer the question, NO. This is ridiculous, anytime there is a game requiring install, people always jump around and make articles like THIS.

sonarus6559d ago

It all depends on the technology. Uncharted and insomniac games use data duplication techniques to curb loading. However, not all developers seem knowledgable in these techniques. Some games install the whole fvkin game into the hard drive which i think is lame. Sony needs to work with devs, to introduce them to such tech. Fallout 3 is using similar data duplication techniques.

Problem is most devs are too lazy to alter their code they would much rather fill up a 25GB disc with 8GB of game code and do a 5GB install untop of that.

MGS4 is exempt from this because it uses the 50GB disc to full capacity, for them, data duplication is NOT an option. If the game were to not install it wouldn't be 50GB it would be more like 25 which is also lame

omni_atlas6559d ago

Uncharted does have a (brief) Install. It places files on your hard drive the first time you put the disc in the system -- and it explains the slightly longer loading time when you first start the game.

lsujester6559d ago (Edited 6559d ago )

Well, regardless of whether it's "overboard" or not, it's something we better be getting used to on consoles (funny how it's fine on PCs, isn't it?). If the 360 had mandatory HDDs, they'd have installs, too. It'd be beneficial, too... could possibly help the Unreal Engine issue of delaying the textures.

But I imagine later in this generation and definitely in the next, we will see most, if not all, games having some sort of install on the hard drive. Data can offloaded much faster from it than it can optical drives.

jaysquared6559d ago

So I thought the PS3 was a gaming CONSOLE and not a PC but I guess Sony is fighting microsoft in the PC gaming business too..

Lifendz6559d ago

got me a 180gb HDD from there for less than 70 bucks. I never have to worry about space again. I have movies (full HD movies, over 400 songs, and some downloaded games and I still have more than 100 gigs left. It's worth the investment guys.

The only time an install makes me mad is when its a multiplat game and the 360 version has no install or the PS3 version with the install has no real differences/improvements. Pointing at DMC4 here.

Raptors6559d ago

Uncharted is "easily" the best looking game on any console? Easily? Wow. You guys really know how to put something on your back and run with it boy...

SL1M DADDY6559d ago

You wait up to 3 years in some cases for games to release and your upset about having to wait another 20 minutes for a mandatory install required to play the game? Once installed, you don't have to do it again so it is one time and you're in the game. Ever play computer games?

Sorry, but the arguments against mandatory installs is stupid and is for one, not Sony's fault and two is evident of a poor developer r lazy developer that is taking advantage of the HDD that ALL PS3's have. My guess is that you would see more of this on the 360 if it too had an HDD in all consoles sold.

Uncharted, quite honestly the best looking game and the best playing game on the PS3 requires no install. It's a dev issue, so if you all have a beef with it, then complain the devs but to be honest, it's not a big deal for those who are not looking to nit pick about the PS3.

Real Gambler6559d ago

First: Dang I love that comment: "You wait up to 3 years in some cases for games to release and your upset about having to wait another 20 minutes for a mandatory install required to play the game?" So true! Ever play computer games? I guess guys who are upset by an install delay do not own computers!!! What about the 20 minutes they are loosing, driving back from the store... They don't complaint about that!

Two: Today's PC come with a minimum of 250gig. They play the same games as a console. Nobody is complaining that games install on a PC. I never read once in a PC game review: "We are removing some points because it takes 20 minutes for the game to install". Yet, I've seen PS3 game review were points were removed because of a game install...

Three: First line of the article is: "One of the advantages of PLAYSTATION 3 over its rivals is the inclusion of HDD." But devs should not use it??? Even if they are lazy (which is quite often the case), it's available, it's there, and it's not an option. It's up to the user to decide if that's a factor in buying a game. For a game like MGS4, even if your drive is already full, you'll make room for it. If it's a lousy game, you may not buy it because of the install. So eventually, PS3 drives will fill so devs will loose sales over mandatory installs, or they will simply start programming correctly, go for optional installs, or no install all together.

I didn't buy a console with a hard drive to store movies on it. DVDs are much better to store movies. How many time do you watch the same movie in a year? Yikes, if you watch it so many times, just store it on any USB external hard drive. Music is the same. Why storing music on your hard drive when today's MP3 players can store 2000 songs or 1000 hours of music? Just plug your MP3 player in your PS3 if you want to listen to music, and you're all set for a full year of music, 3 hours every evening, without listening to the same song, for about a year!

So yep, I bought my console with a hard drive for games. If enough great games eventually fill my 60 gig hard drive, then be it, I'll just buy a 250 gig hard drive (will likely cost less than $75 then). But at 5 gig installs, that's like 10 absolutely awesome games I'm playing regularly at least once a week. I'm not there yet! Currently, I still play with the same 4 games, and none of them had installs exept GTprologue!!! (Well, maybe also Warhawk, but not playing it as much anymore, so it could go if I needed space.) Everything else? Just demos...

Tomdc6559d ago

Install are an issue actually. Many games have now started to use installs around 3GB and along with other media most people have on thier PS3's the hard drive can be filled up with about 10 games... I'm someone who goes back and plays a few levels of different games frequently since I can't afford many new ones (and I don't wanna sell two games so I can buy one more because ultimately ill have less games to play) so deleting installs to make room for others is impractical for me. I might be forced to buy a larger hard drive now which I dont really think is necerssary...

lessthanmarcus6559d ago (Edited 6559d ago )

and still keep the gamesaves. I welcome installs for every game I buy from here on out. Might be a problem for reviewers since they review different games every day but not for the average player.

To the guy above me, you can always reinstall. But please name me the games you have that are taking up all your space.

Doppy6559d ago

I have to agree there are too many games asking for installs now. It's fine if it's a short wait and a small amouunt of data, but the 20 min. wait for 5GB is getting old.

Nevers6559d ago (Edited 6559d ago )

After being led astray by the sales-people about the 20gig Pro HDD for the 360 being adequate space, I'm now concerned about how much space I'll truely need. It's not that I'm lazy but I am poor; so spending another chunk o'cash for more space isn't on my "dearly beloved to-do" list after spending tons just for the console. Researching how much space I might need and concern for backwards compatibility were actually the main reasons I'd put-off purchasing a PS3... But now, I think I've found my ideal PS3 in the $499 MGS4 80gig bundle coming out.

I'm glad that article about Bad Company having a approximate install of 300Mb came out the other day...

http://www.n4g.com/NewsCom-...

*BECAUSE it showed all these installs (if required by the game) can have a range down to just 300Mb (which is tiny) up to 5Gb (kinda hefty).

I'm not concerned about the time waiting for it to install as much as how much space the install takes away from my pool.

thesummerofgeorge6559d ago

If it makes for a better experience in any way it's worth it. I can't imagine why anyone would complain about this. Some people need to find fault in everything.

Blaine6558d ago

Saying it's up to the devs doesn't fix my problem. I have a 20gb HDD SKU (which actually has about 14 gigs of usable space) and, while that didn't use to be a problem, it's getting really cramped.

If my memory is correct, Gran Turismo Prologue installed 4 gigs, Grand Theft Auto IV installed 3, and Devil May Cry 4, which I'm only getting to now, required 5. That's 12 gigs already, for only three games I currently play. Where am I supposed to save my demos or game videos? I like to use the PS Store too--a lot, actually. Having to delete game data is a pain because it already takes a while to install and it limits the games I can play when I want to.

Uh, what's my point? Well I don't really have one because my whole post is contradictory if you think about it... My point is I had to spend 70$ to buy a new HDD. I'm not complaining, but I'm sure a lot of people would. Game installs have gone overboard (but not if it's for MGS4--that game deserves all the space it wants! DMC4, on the other hand, can suck my-).

Condoleezza Rice6559d ago

The only thing going overboard is the number of articles and writers whining about having to install games, onto a console that comes with 20GB of hard drive space, and more,as a standard.

badz1496559d ago

It's funny people whining about some games requiring installations on ps3 when some of them insist that PC games look and perform better than consoles but we knew that all PC games are installed into the HDD! I don't know, why it's ok on pc but not on PS3? ...and I'm sure if all 360 come with HDD, dev will exploit their way into it the same way the are doing with the PS3. the only thing stopping them is M$ policy not allowing mandatory install! and then people coming and say "I want to just pop in the disc and play the game without the install because this is console" - are you going to play the game and finish it in one go the first time you play? it's not like you need to install every f***ing time you play the game later on. so, stop being a douche over there! as for me, I don't care about install and never will because I know, this is the way it's going to stay!

Nostradamus6559d ago

Arent they already on the HDD?

I dont like the installs, but I am used to it by now, I just come to expect it now.

Varsarus6559d ago

The 360 is more like a Wii (without a hard drive), than the PC or PS3!

Everything on the DVD9 is extremely compressed and it takes away power and time to decompress everything on the fly on a streamed game! Ding Ding! PS3 Wins! LOL, so Ultimate reason is to have everything like a PC to speed up load times without having to decompress everything every time you play the game.

Veryangryxbot6559d ago

40 GB is too little? Well No SHIAT. Thats why PS3s came with 60GB and 80GB.

But did people listen? Instead people starting complaining about HIGH PRICE. The 40GB is the result of slashing the hardware to make it cheaper. And now people COMPLAIN AGAIN.

If you bought a 40GB, you should have realized that you need to upgrade your HDD in the foreseeable future!
Dont be a fking stupid sheep. Action causes reaction. And if a cheap PS3 is what you wanted, you got it man. Just dont complain in the future....wait, what are YOU DOING RIGHT NOW. COMPLAINING LIKE A FKING BIATCH!

Stupid article.

syanara6558d ago

remember having a hard drive is very important remember burnout paradise if your 360 didn't have a Hard drive then u couldn't play online. now don't get me wrong 40gb is pretty small thats why sony should release a 120 or 200 gb version for more download crazy user's Its not that games take up alot of space with installs I mean you can delete game data and keep your save files like if your not playing a game anymore then delete the game data it will reinstall when you play the game next. its not that big of a deal. but for people who like having lots of stuff on their ps3 it be movies, music, games, w/e sony should make a larger HDD version.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle22d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Why did Sony push Shuhei Yoshida out of his role leading PlayStation's first-party games? He'd overseen some huge successes. Well, apparently, he didn't listen.

S2Killinit30d ago (Edited 30d ago )

Wtf why all that anger. PlayStation is dominating on every level. Besides I think there is a little more to hiring a CEO than just who is available. Its not like its a athlete your team wants to buy.

live service failures, chasing trends, closing studios. yes dominating

Cacabunga30d ago

Sony is Dominating because competition is not existing. Compared to previous gens this is the poorest in terms of software offerings.

Last gen we got Uncharted 4 Lost Legacy and TLOU2 from ND alone.

This is so far a remasters gen, with no competition to lift up the quality

1nsomniac30d ago (Edited 30d ago )

..."PlayStation is dominating on every level"....

...Really???

PlayStation are soon heading into a new generation in the not to distant future. They currently have the worst customer satisfaction they've ever sustained as a company. The company is heading for a huge crash while at the same time they'll need to be planning how they are going to try and win back that favour and the build up to their new releases.

Yes financially they're winning but they're going to have to ride out this complete public corporate disaster. No one has faith in the company or the product anymore. They've damaged their public image so much this generation. Greed can kill anyone.

He would've done the same thing and fire Jim Ryan and Shuhei would be the villain. Why?
Because Elite creates the narrative and distraction for gamers, users and citizens.

Outside_ofthe_Box30d ago

More confirmation that Jim Ryan is the culprit for what has happened to Sony. Hulst needs to go too. What sucks is that a lot of the good top heads at Sony are no longer there. I wish that guys that were forced out prematurely by Dumbo Jimbo like Shuhei and Layden came back.

robtion29d ago

Yep. Yoshida was responsible for bringing one of the best games of this generation to playstation (Stellar Blade). He is an actual gamer and is in touch with what gamers want (creative, fun games, not GaaS and agenda pushing). He also seems like a genuinely nice guy if you watch some interviews. Of course they got rid of him.

darthv7230d ago

Makes you wonder if MS even thought about hiring him after Phil and Sarah were leaving. He certainly couldn't make their situation any worse.

All the gamer/consumer lead heads are gone across PS and Xbox. shuhei gone phil's gone (questionable) but gone. The future of gaming is somewhat uncertain across the board.
