Ubisoft admits that DRM will not stop piracy

“I don’t want us in a position where we’re punishing a paying player for what a pirate can get around. Anything is going to be able to pirated given enough time and enough effort to get in there. So the question becomes, what do we create as services, or as benefits, and the quality of the game, that will just have people want to pay for it?”

but they still do it any anyway

Minimoth4348d ago

It's not nearly as bad as it was a few years back. They are making progress.

randomass1714348d ago

For once we agree. If Ubisoft really acknowledges this, they need to stop with the bogus DRM, especially in single player games.

Yi-Long4348d ago

Not really. They still put uPlay in pretty much every release, and with each new release, customers seem to be complaining about problems with that service, where they can't access online, or leader-boards, or whatever. Watch_Dogs had it's problems, Trials Fusion had it's problems, etc etc.

The idea of uPlay is OK, which is rewarding loyal customers, but it simply doesn't seem to work all that well, plus it's just annoying to remember all these different accounts and passports and syncing them all up...

Razputin4348d ago

@Yi-Long.

Belive me that is nothing. Try playing Assassin's Creed 2 or Prince of Persia The Forgotten Sands.

I have great Internet and those games were horrible with the DRM implementation.

Darkstares4348d ago

If you read between the lines they want everyone to stay connected online. That's why they emphasize services. Games like The Division I think will require it, same with The Crew. Others like the new Rainbow Six is heavily based on online play as well.

I game like Destiny is also going this route too (I know it's not a Ubisoft title).

Thanks for what? Ruining many PC games for legitimate buyers only to turn around and say it doesn't stop piracy anyway?

Mrtemper4348d ago

@YI the password thing is a pain.

The console version of uplay works much better and you get the rewards. So I'm sticking to my Xbox for ubi games.

porkChop4348d ago

It's sad that it took them this long to finally admit it.

"I don’t want us in a position where we’re punishing a paying player for what a pirate can get around."

That is exactly what you've been doing to PC gamers for years now.

djplonker4348d ago

I was looking at how the pirates got past the drm thinking they had to mess around alot to get it working but thats not the case!

To get around the drm on pc you open uplay and dont sign in its that simple lol

Activemessiah4348d ago (Edited 4348d ago )

"Oh we know it won't stop pirates but we're still gonna pick on legit gamers for BUYING our game"

In case people don't know: Pirated Ubi game = No Uplay DRM

Let them reap what they sow.

Codewow4348d ago

"We don't want to punish our paying customers for what a pirate can get around." SO why did you even make Uplay then!?! That's punish your paying players for not doing what a pirate does to get around your crap... and that goes for EA and the old Windows Live system as well.

DarkBlood4348d ago

Uplay is a drm? Wasnt even aware it was thought it was just some not so usefull extea reward unlock system

Activemessiah4348d ago (Edited 4348d ago )

A lot of people were unable to play Watch Dogs on PC because of that thing.

Edit: Itachi83 below covered it nicely.

I can't sit here and act like I know these workers financial situations. And I'm sure nobody wakes up WANTING to go to court. But for the sake of the industry, I wish some of these types of cases made it to trial.

Settlements allow companies to continue to do whatever abusive practices they do. While the trials (should the company lose) would actually force real changes for the better.

But again, I'm not in these workers shoes and I can understand them not wanting to risk it.
