Hardcore Gamer: For the purpose of this exercise, we will aim to keep Capcom at home in Japan, so we will only be looking at Japanese publishers. That will exclude the big boys like EA and Activision from this scenario. With that said, let's take a look at the contenders.

Jason Dietz: "We reveal the past year's best and worst video game publishers (based on their 2025 releases) in the 16th edition of our annual Game Publisher Rankings."
But... but... the garbage-mongers always tell us that Square Enix is in trouble! 😂

Capcom has clarified its current stance on generative AI in its videogames. The major Japanese publisher and developer behind popular series like Resident Evil, Street Fighter, and Monster Hunter has revealed that while it doesn't use gen-AI assets in their games, it is exploring ways to use generative AI to streamline the game development process.
Using Artificial Intelligence (more like Realistic Stupidity) art assets in your games is a great way to get people to boycott your product. We don't need that ugly, unsophisticated, generic, fake art in our games, good on CAPCOM for not using that garbage.
Naw you can't fool us, You work with Nvidia, that's a fact! And here you wanted to advertise but now look stupid!
Square Enix so they can have a monopoly on Japanese publishers who produce western games.
Nintendo appear to have considerable partnership with Capcom in regards to the Monster Hunter franchise and such, if they wanted to sustain that relationship then it would have its benefits for Nintendo to acquire them.
But Nintendo wouldn't have much use for a lot of their IP I think, like Street Fighter for instance, which would be starved of a community if it were exclusive to the Wii U for instance.
Sega is most likely too poor for a such an acquisition, Square Enix the only other liable contender? But I don't think Capcom's acquisition would benefit Square an awful lot, especially as Capcom are not that successful at breaching the Western market which Square appear to be focused on right now.
Sony seem intent on capturing more of the Japanese market, and a lot of Capcom's intellectual property would be quite at home on playstation platforms. But I don't realistically see them benefiting that much in the long-term. Although Monster Hunter would probably save the Vita, I wouldn't think much of their other IP would have much impact on Sony's hardware sales.
Basically, Capcom don't really seem that desirable a company to acquire right now. If anything it could perhaps make more sense for a Western publisher like Microsoft to make the acquisition in order to gain a foothold on the Japanese market.
