Dear Media, Enough with the Nintendo Hate!

Gaming Console Network's Sean Foster writes "Over the last year or so Nintendo has taken a beating with the press. It seems that no matter what Nintendo does, they are sent to bed without supper. All you have to do is look on the internet and see the constant stream of negative news articles. The theme running these days seems to be "Nintendo is Doomed!" This is an open letter to all of my fellow journalists and members of the gaming media. Seriously, Can we lighten up on Nintendo?"

A lot of people never played Wii U and still criticize the device and the company. We can discuss about the lack of games from another studios, but can't ignore the fact about the great exclusives made by Nintendo.
It's easy to find "journalists" saying that Nintendo should leave the hardware market, well, these guys should leave journalism and leave space for professionals.

LOL_WUT4364d ago (Edited 4364d ago )

Most of the "hate" or criticism as I see it is warranted. Are journalists to blame too for Nintendo's incompetence to compete with either Sony or Microsoft? Or the lack of games/hardware sales? How about getting more 3rd party support like they promised during release?

It also doesn't help if most of their fanbase still pretends like everything is ok they too need to SPEAK UP. Lastly, I honestly hope Nintendo learns from their mistakes this gen ;)

"How about getting more 3rd party support like they promised during release?"

What do you expect them to do at this point? Stick a gun in the face of every publisher CEO and demand games for Wii U? Third party developers are not interested and there isn't much Nintendo can do to change that at this point.

Much of the valid criticism that Nintendo deserved was from poor decisions that they made around launch time for Wii U. The lack of games, the long load times, no Virtual Console games, etc. Many of those issues have been and are continuing to be addressed. It's not that Nintendo doesn't deserve criticism, but I agree that this hateful "doomed" crap needs to stop. It's not constructive and it's often outlandish and repetitive. Also, no one ever acknowledges what they are doing right, such as backwards compatibility, full support for GCN Smash fans, an open world Zelda game, Bayonetta 1 & 2 bundled and even new IPs.

There making a comeback. Slowly but surely. This E3 definitely showed they had plenty of games coming. What more do you want? When Nintendo accomplishes something people will ALWAYS find a way to complain. There is no pleasing everybody

iamnsuperman4364d ago (Edited 4364d ago )

Surely the fact the Wii U has had poor sales (i.e. the people who have never played it obviously never bought one) is justifiable criticism in itself. Sure you can stick to the argument that try before you can give a opinion but the issue the Wii U faces is because people don't want to try/buy it. Just some food for thought

Really? I'm not speaking for all sites since N4G allows big and small time gaming articles but from what I've seen on here Nintendo have gotten it pretty easy, it could of been much worse.

I mean people are making it out like the 2006-2008 PS3/Sony hate articles when it's nowhere near that. I'd understand if Nintendo was on a solid, steady track right now and were doing really well, better then Sony/MS but they aren't, they've messed up since the Wii U launched (however they've been improving a little recently) so obviously people are going to have something to say.

As I've said I'm not defending the ones which do hate on them like the ones about, for example, the next Zeldas graphics compared to the tech demo, how they should just do smart phone games or how they should go third party (You know...those obvious ones) but the point is these articles which do fairly criticize Nintendo are written for a reason. Their heads seem to be in the clouds half the time.

NintendoSonyfan4364d ago

I agree mostly with what you said, but I would also point out that while Wii U is doing better than Xbox One in total sales, and now even in week to week sales, the media is still counting Nintendo out. Lots of articles refer to the "next generation of gaming" but then only mention PS4 and Xbone. While Wii U may not match the sheer power, it is still part of this generation by definition of the word. And there have been journalists who have basically said Wii U does not count as part of this generation. Then there are those who also write articles about a new Nintendo game or the Amiibo figures, and then feel the need to include a pragraph at the end about how Nintendo reported lower than expected sales figures 4 months ago when it is irrelevant to the article. And these are game sites with integrity doing it, not fanboy sites.
I do think the media is half the reason Wii U is having a hard time. While Nintendo themselves certainly make up the other half with their poor advertising, failure to compel third parties to them etc, the media is doing a disservice by putting a negative spin on everything. The Amiibo line is going to be a cash cow for Nintendo but every article I read mentions how "they will be great for kids, but again Nintendo is only focusing on the younger crowd." I would say A) Someone needs to focus on that crowd and B) Collectors of all ages and even adults will be interested as well.
When Nintendo does something wrong then please point it out, but I don't like to see the media try to put a negative slant on every story about them. I majored in journalism and understand the importance of objectivity, but unfortunately in this day that seems to be less important than being controversial or getting clicks on an article.

Very well said my friend. You get a bubble up from me.

No94364d ago

Just as a point of interest, I recently attended a Smash Bros Best Buy event, not one single 'kid'. Teens and upwards only.

Concertoine4364d ago (Edited 4364d ago )

Bad press is toxic as hell these days. I can see how many might be dissuaded by all the negativity. I mean imagine being a parent buying your kid a gift and googling "Wii U" and the first thing you see is some BS about it "being discontinued next year" according to some crackpot analyst.

kingtroy4364d ago

Nintendo will forever be in my childhood years.

Baccra174364d ago

What crap. Nin always gets a pass with the press. Hell if Sega received the "hate" Nin supposedly gets when the Dreamcast was around, the Dreamcast would still be here.

Trolltroll4364d ago

Sega went broke by making poor business decitions w the dreamcast the loss they where taking on each consloe sold was to large to make up with the slow software sales. The companys liquid funds where exausted after one year no money no consoles The dreamcast sold well and that ultimately killed itself death by success.
I miss SEGA hardware they where way ahead of the times.

lilbroRx4364d ago (Edited 4364d ago )

What a load of crap.

SEGA didn't receive hate for the Dreamcast, it received praise. The things people talk about the most with the Dreamcast is how it failed even though it was an actual good console that people liked. Sometimes I wonder if you people live in another dimension.

Nintendo on the other hand receives endless hate and bashing even when they do well. The Wii was the highest selling console last gen, but rarely was anything good said about it in the gaming media. I remember it being called imulse buy, Gamecube 1.5 and all kinds of other insults right under it being sold out everywhere. On the other hand, even when the PS3 was losing Sony billions and selling the least, the media was still praising it.

Nintendo does not get any passes. In fact, people go out of their way to find things to bash them about which your post is a good example of. Nintendo gets undo hate on a very unequal and biased scale.

Knushwood Butt4364d ago

Yeah, Mario Kart 8 had a real tough time /s

Austacker4364d ago

Oh this is rich!

Hey N4G, enough of the Microsoft hate maybe?

This place is so Sony bias I question whether I'm reading negfag or this place browsing their 'news' articles most times...

U.S. patent examiner rejects Nintendo’s summoning characters patent as obvious: non-final ruling

The rejection is non-final (and even when such rejections are labeled as “final”, the process is far from over, given that there can be, at minimum, an appeal to the Federal Circuit).

Good, as they should! A game mechanic like that shouldn't be locked behind a patent, and Nintendo didn't invent it either.

PRIMORDUS58d ago (Edited 58d ago )

Nintendo wants to keep wasting money on bullshit lawsuits, real smart in this economy. They should put that money aside for other game projects. On the other hand, I don't care if they waste it all either, and they are screwed in the future maybe that will teach them a lesson.

The fact that you have ANY disagrees will forever baffle me. And to the (apparent) MAGA contingent that exists on this website, enjoy your 8-9 dollar gas.

AuraAbjure83d ago (Edited 83d ago )

Yes, they had better be pissed after Trump told them the way they rip off the USA is over.

EveryPlatformGamer84d ago

LOL I read this on gaff, will they refund the money back to the gamers? highly unlikely. Didn't they just raise prices and pass it onto the gamers? Only Nintendo would send out the Ninjas to the US government.

-Foxtrot84d ago

That’s what I was thinking, imagine them winning hypothetically, getting a s**t load of money back which they would have lost if they hadn’t raised their prices and it’s business as normal.

It would just mean people paid more for no reason since they got the money back anyway.

Outside_ofthe_Box83d ago (Edited 83d ago )

A lot of companies partially passed the cost to consumers instead of all of it. They would still have to at least pay that back to gamers, but we know that won't happen. What's also sad is that prices won't come back down after the initial hike caused by tariffs.

People didn't understand the full repercussions of tariffs. That alone should have cost him the presidency if people knew it was a permanent price hike for consumers

Inverno84d ago

The people should sue these companies for having to over pay cause of these tariffs.

Eonjay84d ago

Naw they should sue the government for forcing the tax to begin with. No one reasonably expects these companies to absorb the taxes. Many smaller companies tried and were shut down or faced to increase prices to try to maintain their business. The tariffs effect everyone.

Inverno82d ago

I meant it mostly as a joke cause we all know the costs of these tariffs were passed onto the consumer. But it's seems no matter how vocal we are here in the states our "representatives" don't seem to care enough to represent us. And things are about to get worse.

Killer2020UK83d ago

The companies were doing what the law required then to do, the tariffs however were illegally implemented. Usually it's criminals we punish, you seem to have different ideas 🤷‍♂️
