Nintendo 'Interested' in VR

VRFocus - The virtual reality (VR) industry enjoyed a late-E3 2014 surprise last week when Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto, the iconic developer behind the likes of Mario and The Legend of Zelda, was seen using the Oculus Rift VR headset in an image posted online. At the time the famed creator didn't reveal his thoughts on the technology or if Nintendo itself would be working with it. Now an interview published this week has revealed just what Miyamoto makes of VR.

Nintendo VR Device confirmed!

I don't count Virtual Boy since that was an fail.

BullyMangler4357d ago (Edited 4357d ago )

virtual Boy is reason for Oculus and lol sony Morpheus

nintendos just too far ahead of the curve with all this gaming stuff .

Power Gluvin since the 80's buoi

NegativeCreep4274357d ago

This is interesting if true. I swear that I just saw an article here on N4G saying that unlike Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo ARE NOT interested in VR.

CouldHaveYelledUiiW4357d ago

BUT
You have to count Virtual Boy

Just like the NES Famicon (late 80's) used to have online banking and even online play functions.

However, Nintendo could not make it profitable until other people invested money into the infrastructures and also creating public demand for the technologies.

The same reason they stayed away from HD, because they did not see it as their place to force gamers into switching to a new format (SD to HD).
YES,
They under-estimated how quickly people would adapt to HD, but remember Nintendo does not sell TVs like Sony.

So,
It's not that Nintendo is afraid of tech, it's just that they are trying to run their company efficiently.

And like it or not Motion Controls and Voice Control in XB1 & PS4 are, in part, fueled by the Wii's success. Just like the WiiU is HD because of 360's and PS3's success.

"It's not that Nintendo is afraid of tech, it's just that they are trying to run their company efficiently."

But they AREN'T doing that. If they want to run their company efficiently and if they want to be successful in this day and age it requires them to be ahead of the curve. That's smart business. If you want to be successful then you need to lead the pack, and you can't lead if you're not in front.

i bet they do it right if they ever get into it.. Yes the Virtual Boy was a disaster (w the exception of Wario Land.. That game was GREATNESS!!) but nintendo never actually created that.. They bought it & slapped their name on it.. Was originally designed to be a toy...

With the tech we have now, nintendos nx gen system could be amazing with something like this

deafdani4357d ago

That's not true. Nintendo did, in fact, create the Virtual Boy. It was Gunpei Yokoi's invention. After its disastrous commercial failure, Yokoi was "forced" to resign from Nintendo, despite the fact that Ninty actually released the Virtual Boy against Yokoi's advice, who felt the device just wasn't ready for market yet.

Unfair world we live in, right? :/

our_games_are_art4357d ago

You're painting Nintendo in a bad light its my understanding that he retired. And even left on a high note, releasing gameboy pocket.

IonDestroy4357d ago (Edited 4357d ago )

They never forced him to retire, he stayed longer than he planned to in order to release a successful product after the virtual boy so he wouldn't be leaving on a sour note. After the Gameboy Pocket he decided to call it quits.

Edit: for context, the virtual boy was supposed to be his farewell gift to Nintendo before moving on. It failed and thus he forced himself to stay.

lilbroRx4357d ago

This is a complete lie. How are you getting agrees for this?

Yokoi was not forced to resign. He was moved to different position in the company. He didn't like this position because he wasn't allowed to be creative, so he left on his own accord. It was the same with Yu Suzuki and Shenmue at SEGA.

deafdani4357d ago

@lilbro: what I've read was that Yokoi was demoted after the Virtual Boy's fiasco. Said demotion was a tactic by the company's high executives so that he would eventually leave his position "honourably", without having to fire him. That's what I meant by "forced" resignation, instead of straight up firing.

I remember that there's an actual term to refer to this business practice, but right now, I can't recall it.

However, after reading these replies I wondered if I got it wrong or remembered it incorrectly, so I went googling.

And after googling about it for a bit, I can see that there are conflicting reports about what really went down regarding Yokoi's departure from Nintendo, similar to the conflicting reports regarding Nintendo and Sony's debacle about the Playstation. Because of this, I will correct my original statement and say that it may have happened, but it may as well have not.

But if nobody knows with absolute certainty, you can't say whether what I said is true or not. :/

Are a bunch of games, some of which are nearly 10 years old not one being from 2026. Barely one from 2025.

I do like the irony of the closing paragraph though, "Why VR Adventure Games are Thriving". Really buddy?

mooreneco2140d ago

That’s because it’s his favourite VR adventure games thus far, a great game always a great game regardless of age - Half life 2/ Ocarina of time - are old but still among the greatest games of all time. The irony of it is several are from last year, depending on platform, have you even played VR?
