Spencer Explains Why Microsoft Didn't Bring Windows Games to E3

Microsoft didn't really hold a press conference this week during E3, Xbox did.

While the company hosted the press conference, we didn't hear a thing about games for Windows phone or Windows PC gaming, a fact that wasn't missed by Xbox head Phil Spencer.

NYC_Gamer4353d ago

Then people would have complained that MS focused too much on PC games...

Magicite4353d ago

Im still curious what they have got left to show.

FarEastOrient4353d ago

Is this correct or the wiki hasn't been updated yet. Microsoft is only developing 2 games on PC for 2014?

thereapersson4353d ago

Why would it matter? PC gamers don't need a Games for Windows association to enjoy games on PC. In fact most people are glad to see the GFW:LIVE program go away. It was an answer to a problem that didn't exist.

choujij4353d ago

IMO, they're devoping more games for Windows than people give them credit for. Xb1 is running a custom Windows 8 OS. Microsoft even said the porting process can be done in a day. So I suspect many of their Xb1 titles to eventually release on Windows PC.

DeadlyFire4353d ago (Edited 4353d ago )

@FarEastOrient
It likely is correct as Microsoft does little work to get anyone interested in PC gaming. Since 2000 PC gaming has pretty much lived on its own without any support from Microsoft. Still though making 2 games a year on PC is more than Valve's one game a year policy since Half-Life 2. Steam has grown on its own to form a majority of PC gamers. Now Valve is hoping to build a platform to pull gamers out of just a Windows gaming environment.

True, but good PC news is bad for "gamer" websites that make their money off console news.

Not a single "well known" website, like IGN or Gamespot or Eurogamer, mentioned that PAX East this year was 100% DOMINATED by PC games, blowing consoles out the water.

But nobody reported about it, because "nobody cares about PC gaming, it's dying", or whatever bullcrap console gamers come up with today.

LightDiego4353d ago (Edited 4353d ago )

Look this guy again, complaining about the console gamers. you are always trolling on consoles articles with the pc master race bullshit.
Your comments are a big joke.

kewlkat0074353d ago

Bet you that would of been it...Too much PC games, they loose E3.

Then again, some thought they lost E3 because there was too much focused on just games..

3-4-54353d ago

Good move.

This needed to be announced at a different time as to not take away from XB1 focus.

I'm pretty sure people would have been complaining that MS has shifted focus from console games to pc gaming and how they are now abandoning console gamers

Christopher4353d ago

Which is funny because originally it was how Microsoft had abandoned PC gamers. Now we're just rolling with that. It's okay to abandon PC gamers, but don't you ever do anything to give the impression that you are abandoning consoles in any way, shape, or form.

BABYLEG4353d ago

People would've said they focused too much on games and not enough on multimedia even though we know the Xbox one is the best media machine out there.

As an Xbox owner, I'm surprised people are complaining that all they showed was games.. we already know all the capabilities. Why other companies focus on 8 separate game products while on the brink of bankruptcy is beyond me. Seems like ps4 only will be playing 3rd party AAA titles until 2016

Allsystemgamer4353d ago

You clearly didn't watch e3. Ps4 games come out early 2015. Lbp3 and drive club are this holiday 2014 so you are incredibly miss informed.

sic_chops4353d ago

I think he is informed, but a troll.

Codey474353d ago

Tbh Microsoft allegedly state how dedicated they are to the PC platform, but every time they only show how dedicated they are to monopolis(z)e it.

GFWL and Windows 8 spring to mind immediately.
I should know I've been here before on many occasions whence Microsoft state "we're dedicated to PC" it always means the opposite.

Even here on N4G's PC section the only way a PC topic can muster over 4 comments is when it has PS4 and XBOX One connected to the title. Not acceptable for a gaming centric site.

To be honest, especially after "watchdoggate" I don't think that PC is the go to platform this gen. Because history has a trick of repeating itself with PC.

Everybody seems to have high hopes on PC with DirectX12 When in reality DirectX11's Native full compliance support is somewhat laughable (ie:- not shoehorned in with a patch)

6 games are native DirectX11 on the PC platform as of writing this

Crysis 3
Daylight
Titanfall
Tropico 5
War Of The Vikings
Watch_Dogs

I think for a 5 year old API to have a catalogue of 6 games that are fully compliant is ridiculous.

There's a reason Crysis 3 looks better than Crysis 2 (post DX11 patch)
Crysis 3 Native DX11
Crysis 2 shoehorned patch DX11

Please don't retort with a DirectX11 list of games from wikipedia. Like I said 99% of those titles of are patched... not built from the ground up with the API in question.

It's also be nice if DX12 were to add new vertex, pixel and shader models. Atm I'm lead to believe(I haven't read the white papers) That it's just a speed increase for multicore CPU's.

feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

F4sterTh4nFTL4353d ago (Edited 4353d ago )

Yet only 4.5 Million Xbox One's sold while their are hundreds of millions of PC gamers perhaps a billion maybe.

If Microsoft did not abandon PC gaming in favor of Xbox then perhaps PC gaming would have made much more money for them than what Xbox did and perhaps they would have been able to establish a digital store rivaling Steam or maybe they could have been the Steam in that alternate timeline.

Codewow4353d ago

If they would have focused on PC gaming it would definitely be interesting to see where Sony and Nintendo would be if they continued with consoles.

DeadlyFire4353d ago

Well its likely in the future that Windows gaming might go downward while SteamOS, Linux, MacOS, and possibly others spring up for the PC. Considering a Cloud app could be supported on all platforms with the same catalog of games. Microsoft does very little to build support for the Windows gaming platform as its so big that it pretty much moves on its own.

Vegamyster4353d ago (Edited 4353d ago )

"It's a retail show, it's a console show, so it didn't really feel like the right place for us to talk about Windows, but Windows and gaming on Windows is critical to Microsoft's success."

On the E3expo website:

"E3 is the world's premier trade show for computer and video games and related products."

LAWSON724353d ago (Edited 4353d ago )

Who do you think was watching MS press conference people interested in PC or Xbone? I agree with what he is saying, it does not seem like the right place to do it. Would I have loved some PC news at the show, sure, but being realistic the conference has never been about PC (at least for a very long time) so those watching are wanting Xbox news. MS has set their E3 showing up for Xbox so that is what people have come to expect from them, so why disappoint them.

The show has PC games however PC is kind of that independent platform that has no lead company supporting it for gaming (besides Valve but...). It just has publishers and developers show off their games for the platform.

As far as MS is concerned it is a console show because they have obtained that image through years of making it that way, thus their audience is console gamers so why would they show them PC games? Especially as he stated they could save it for an actual event where the PC crowd is their major audience or can make them their main focus.

Vegamyster4353d ago (Edited 4353d ago )

If they took 2 minutes to announce some older games for Steam with Steamworks like Gears Of War 1 without GFWL since that's going away they'd receive lots of praise and wouldn't compromise the Xone. They could appeal both groups if they wanted.

Somebody4353d ago

Ok, let's say E3 is for consoles only and MS don't think it's appropriate for it to show it's Windows games there.

So...

When and where does MS announce it's Windows games in an E3 like manner? As far as I know I have never heard of such thing existed. And ALL of the Windows games that Spencer is excited about are F2Ps with a big focus on touch screen. Another batch of games that keep asking for your money while playing is not something to celebrate.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio15d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing14d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9214d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit14d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing14d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9214d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

Eonjay16d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn217d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn216d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown17d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay16d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay16d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac16d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger17d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300017d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde17d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde16d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

Reaper22_16d ago

Why would they pull out? They have the momentum. Sony has been getting nothing but bad news lately.
