Media Molecule is not developing LittleBigPlanet 3

In a tweet by Media Molecule, the developers have said that Sumo Digital and Sony XDev Europe will be developing LittleBigPlanet 3. Both Sumo Digital and Sony XDev Europe have worked on the previous LittleBigPlanet games.

lashes2ashes4354d ago

They announced a long time ago that they were done with little big planet.

BlakHavoc4354d ago

O ok didn't know that. So that leaves plenty of first party studios without a game announced.

SSM
MM
Bend
London
Japan
GG
ND second team

Wowzers!

LightofDarkness4354d ago

@Blak: which consequently means that whatever they're working on is not near advanced enough to be shown to the public, meaning they are all at least 2 years away from release. Not a good thing. I think the problem we're seeing now is developers working right up to the end of the previous generation without enough time to get something out for the current one within the first year (or two, in the cases mentioned above).

Eonjay4354d ago

@BlakHavoc

You might as well add Quantic Dream to that list...

Prime1574354d ago (Edited 4354d ago )

@lightofdarkness,

Advanced is the wrong word. A hot topic in the last 72 hours or so has been TLG. Remember the trailer for that? Link: http://youtu.be/EHzHoMT5eRg

Yeah, going on 6 years or more, and more advanced than many games. Yet the business had supported it. Was it due to demand or creativity? Who knows? Personally, I don't think it will succeed in today's market, but that's besides the point: Advanced is subjective without benchmarks and "pixel-counting" and the like... a common misconception between graphics and vision.

However, I agree with your second point: developers are having a hard time moving to the next generation.

For two, opposite reasons... 1) MS had a negligent end to 360 generation to create a strong 8th generation. 2) Sony had/has a moderately strong 7th generation leading into a low moderate ps4 generation.

I'm not saying you are wrong, by any means. I'm just disagreeing in your assessment of Sony, especially in regards to who was ready.

Sony was steady, Microsoft stopped for two to three years to come out on the stronger side.

Prime1574354d ago

Second thought, post edit: x dev did lbp:vita...

The lbp:vita was, in my opinion, the better of 1, 2, & 3. Story... logic... creativity... gameplay...

If they put the same passion into 3, then... awesome!

Sorry for double post.

Abash4354d ago (Edited 4354d ago )

Honestly, Media Molecule was not needed for LittleBigPlanet 3 and Im happy they are busy with a new IP instead. MM did such a good job laying the foundation of what LBP should be that the other studios that have handled the games they didnt have shined with what they added to MM's original ideas

styferion4354d ago

Would be awesome if MM comes out with a new Crash Bandicoot game.

Sumo have been working on a ps3 exclusive for a while now. Glad it turned to a ps4 title.

Jughead34164354d ago

It'll be cool now if you can create levels without the thermometer filling up. Still lots to show about this game

showtimefolks4354d ago

yeh MM have been working on a new IP supposedly using Morpheus. Didn't get a chance to see sony's e3 conference, just watched it. Amazing, they gave enough time to the big AAA games but also provided more than enough time for indies

LBP3 looks awesome as always
new IP from well FROM SOFTWARE is interesting
Uncharted 4
The order 1886 finally showing monsters(awesome)

I feel like sony held a lot of stuff back because unlike the rumors MS didn't blew the competition away.(ms also had an amazing conference BTW, but it wasn't all that it was suppose to be)

Gamescom should be excellent, we will find out what some of the European studios have been working on:

QD
MM
GG
sony London and sony Bend

at TGS we will find out what some of the Japanese studios are up to, we will also find out more info on FF15 and KH3

I think GTTV video game awards is gonna be the place where we will see sony announce 2 games. Sony santa monica can either Introduce god of war 4 or their new IP

we will not find out what the 2nd team at ND are working on till Uncharted 4 comes out. So Uncharted 4 fall of 2015 than new IP from ND on spike tv video games awards in 2015

I for one think all 4 conferences were excellent, MS started out well. EA followed by showing more games than UBI kept the momentum. Sony finished the day with style

here is hoping that Nintendo shows a lot of games

new zelda
new metriod
mario galaxy game
X
bayonetta
and much more

also wouldn't mind few more HD remakes of past Zelda games

BlakHavoc4354d ago

You optimism blows me away lol I like it, but I think it should be tempered. Sony never really does most of the things you predicted, I doubt we'd see Sony London, Bend, MM, and GG show up at gamescom, if I had to bet i'd say one or two of them show up. As for SSM, where did you hear about a new IP? Or are you saying it'll be either GoW or a new IP, cause the one they did have was canned. I think they are in a good position though to show off GG new IP at gamescom, it's been in development for almost 3 years now and was rumored to have a trailer ready for E3 if necessary, so I wouldn't be surprised to see it at Gamescom. But I wouldn't expect more than maybe 2 more Sony first party exclusives to get announced this year. MAYBE.

showtimefolks4354d ago

BlakHavoc

Sony Santa Monica has close to 3 or 4 teams. One team was let go which was doing a new IP(stig's team)

The god of war 2 director rejoined SSM and has his own team. Than there is the god of war team.

Than they have a team helping Ready at Dawn doing The order 1886. If you look at it sony has a history of showing a game or 2 at spike TV's video game awards.

GG's new IP will be at gamescom
MM for sure also

sony bend and sony london are both in doubt IMO.

ND's 2nd team will not reveal their next game till their first team releases UC4. Just like how UC3 came out than TLOU was revealed(meaning fall 2015 at the earliest)

QD are in Europe and they are doing something not sure when we will see it though

sony Japan is Huge, they have more than 3 teams. One is possibly helping from software like it did with original demon's soul

TLG is in development so that's one more team

than there is the mystery team

Been a long time PS fan, since PS1 days. Sony has so many partnerships with 2nd party studios that you may never know where another game comes from

Insomniac have 3 teams and one is doing the original Ratchet and clank remake, other is doing sunset overdrive what about the 3rd?

excited
optimistic lol
just a happy gamer

good night

callahan094354d ago

This is great news! Because LBP3 provides more of the same great LBP formula while being completely compatible with all published levels from the past two games, and looking great and innovative in itself with the 3 new characters that look like a lot of fun and bring a lot of diversity to the types of level design possible in the platformer.

Why is it great that it's not Media Molecule then? Because this means there is yet another Sony developer who knows how to make a brilliant game, while Media Molecule is working on something ELSE! This means even more games in the pipeline, and one of them is a MM game. Brilliant!

+ Show (2) more repliesLast reply 4354d ago
maniacmayhem4354d ago

So I guess Media Molecule really didn't have anything to show us for E3.

torchic4354d ago

pretty sure they'll be at Gamescom along with Sony London.

FlameHawk4354d ago

They are still working on their new IP. It seems like almost all the First Party studios are working on new IPs. Oh man can't wait for Gamescom, hopefully Guerrilla's new RPG and Media Molecules new IP will appear.

Wizziokid4354d ago

I want to see what these guys are doing and what the rest of the other first parties are doing who haven't announced yet.

MasterCornholio4354d ago

Still looks like plenty of fun.

:)

MM is developing a new IP which should be interesting to see since it's being built for Morpheus.

Top 7 Best PS3 Platformers

A little-known game Puppeteer is on this list for the best PS3 platformers.

Little Big Planet, lol. No.

paddy95442d ago

LBP3 and rayman legends are the best here.

jznrpg442d ago

Puppeteer is really good. Nobody played it because it came out right before PS4 came out. When I went to pick up Puppeteer from GameStop some people were trading in their old consoles for PS4 preorder.

LittleBigPlanet 3 Servers Are Officially Shut Down 'Indefinitely,' Sony Confirms

Sony has confirmed that LittleBigPlanet 3 servers on PlayStation 4 will remain offline “indefinitely” following troubles with the service from earlier this year.

752d ago
rlow1752d ago

Sad day, hopefully they’ll allow a third party server solution. Goes to show game preservation is an uphill battle.

blackblades752d ago

Sad day oh wait everyone that whining about it didn't play it or haven't played it in years and never was going back to it. Funny how people start to care when this happens but when it was actually up those same people didn't even pay attention to it.

rlow1752d ago (Edited 752d ago )

First, you don’t know who has or hasn’t played it. So that’s your assumption. Secondly, even if people haven’t played it in awhile, it’s still nostalgia. Those memories of sharing your creation and having fun playing other peoples creations. Third, no game out there is really like this or as iconic. Today if they made this they would nickel and dime the whole way through and it would launch broken.

Cacabunga752d ago

Reason why i really dislike online games.. they become unplayable over time.. LBP story mode is actually only a tutorial

_Decadent_Descent752d ago

How would you know who's played it or not? What about those who get into games years after their release? They can't now. Besides, and more importantly, this sets a bad precedent across the industry when it comes to game preservation and people's ability to enjoy what they've paid for.

blackblades752d ago (Edited 752d ago )

People still play it but not a lot probably a fee people and I know you 2 guys haven't played it in a long time. If the server was doing so good it wouldnt be shut down. As I said the same people that whine and cry saying bad things on Sony etc are the same ones that havent or stopped playing a certain game in years. Let me ask you guys straight up and y'all tell the truth have you guys played it recently and when you did for how long did you play it.

SonyStyled751d ago

@blackblades “ Let me ask you guys straight up and y'all tell the truth have you guys played it recently and when you did for how long did you play it.”

Whatever “straight up” and “y’all” is, I can tell you the “truth” to answer your question.

I’ve been playing LBP2 for the past 5 years, I have 10 levels to Ace in a row and a coupe more hours in create mode for platinum. I played LBP2 earlier today in crate mode.

It sucked when LBP 1 and 2 servers were closed on PS3, but all those creations were still playable on PS4 LBP3.

Every level creation since LBP1 can’t be played now

CDbiggen751d ago (Edited 751d ago )

Just disappointing. I have such nostalgia for this game and the user levels from LBP 1&2 and I already was gutted when they were shut down but at least they were on LBP3, and now this means I can't ever revisit those creative worlds again. All because some trolls or whatever decided to exploit these games, of all games, for some reason.

What needs to be highlighted by this is that the series has had 4 main games then that go kart spin off yet sony let them all die.

There is 0 games like this on ps5 and to my knowledge 0 first party main kids games no tech demo crap

Sony purchased Media Molecule studio the ip then tossed it away letting it rot for over 7 years yet the community carried on until now were we have lost 16 years on all games of content along with no replacement.

Everyone goes on about ea killing studios but sony has killed way way more but its fine its sony they can do no wrong.

Before the sony blidboys track me down again go fire up your holy boxes all the dlc they tossed out all the trophies and all the user content needs a server side handshake that no longer works. Yes offline single player version 1.0 works but that is it.

Media Molecule was not cut i know but they only made LBP and dreams it was reported they just missed the chopping block
https://gamerant.com/little...

Do not forget the dreams game was tossed out 2020 but 3 years later support was pulled
https://www.digitaltrends.c...

All in all this is another failure at sony on a long long list in the past 10 years

Inverno752d ago

It's kind of hard to disagree when SONY has a history of abandoning many of their IPs. They killed Mod Nation and turnt it into LBP Karting because of brand recognition but left it to die too. They made their own Smash Bros only to rush the studio, and turn the game into an advert for recent release at the time and still let it die. They shut down PS Home for more or less the same reason, they left it to rott till it became too broken and exploited to bother fixing.

just_looken752d ago

This right here

Playstation home is what facebook is trying to make now but in vr that metaverse deal

Imagine if sony kept up ps home development

The death of playstation forums was also a huge loss

Demetrius751d ago

When they refused a days gone sequel and no acknowledgement of a infamous series remaster of those gems, I knew Sony slick abandons stuff, sure they still release good games but to an extent smh

u-bEttA-rUn752d ago

Their games were unable to attract the masses every game that came out the attachment grew smaller and smaller they advertise LBP for years the industry changed and then came fortnight... You want Sony to continue to support them which cost them money that they're not getting back from the studio.

DOMination-752d ago

Honestly, I think a well-designed LBP-style game would do better than ever in the current state of the industry.

People have short attention spans. Having something that is pick up, play a few levels and put down again is the experience the "masses" are after.

Keep it as a 2D platformer only with well-designed base levels, make it easy to build new levels and more importantly easy to access new content - personally I always found the way Forze Horizon 4&5 provide daily, weekly and monthly challenges via new content that they've built or handpicked from the community is a system that works great - and then stick it on mobile and PC with Steam Deck support.

Make it F2P with a one-off fee for the level editor (to stop people spamming crap onto the store) and have MTX for more characters, outfits etc. and there you have a live service game that Sony should be all over.

Do the same with a new Karting game and a 2D fighting/Smash Bros style engine and you have three bangers right there.

(I appreciate the N4G community will hate the idea of LBP being a live service game with MTX and I get that but I think if there's one game this model could work well for, it's this.. just imo)

anast752d ago (Edited 752d ago )

Astro's is similar.

Not enough people cared to play it, so they cut it.

Sony has never been a kid friendly console. This should be obvious. People go to Nintendo for this stuff.

DarkZane751d ago

All signs actually point to a new Astrobot game coming to PS5, so you'd be wrong.

anast751d ago

It's the game that came with the PS5

StoneTitan752d ago

Its on media molecule though. They did not want to continue LBP. Sony accepted that.
Sumo continued it. With a solala lbp3 and a great sackboy though.
Its not sonys fault. They dont want to force a studio to create a new LBP game.
But I would love a revival.

Tacoboto752d ago

I feel bad for Media Molecule. For the ideas they have it seems they need a publisher that supports games like this and Dreams especially for as many players as possible.

DOMination-752d ago

Sony in the Andrew House era did support them massively though. They let them do their thing with LBP and spent millions marketing it. I remember one E3 they even used LBP to cover the boring parts of the presentation where they talk about sales figures etc.

And then they allowed MM to announce their game on the PS4 console announcement/showcase event and waited the entire generation for them to release it.
