to assume that it is too late for anyone to do anything in this console war right now. The PS3 and Wii have only been out for 1.5 years, and the only console that should be in its prime is the 360. I personally think it is incredible what Sony is already giving us for completely no charge at all. This article was just another fanboy's attempt at getting hits on his site.

As long as Sony gets out the PS3 Exclusives, I'm happy. Sony's success against the Xbox 360 has nothing to do with the PSN. The PS2 100 million+ installbase will determine the Playstation 3's success and big AAA PS3 exclusive upcoming games will determine the PS3's success.

I know that Sony will get the PSN in very good shape, but until then, give me the PS3 exclusives Sony and I'll wait for other additions to the PSN for as long as it takes.

but let's not act like Sony didn't have an opportunity to make online a bigger part of their service when they had the chance. Dreamcast was the first console to take online play seriously on a console, however the ps2 handidly trounced the DC and sony didn't have to take the online space serious at the time. People say this is MSFT's 2nd time at online services actually it's their 3rd. They helped sega with SegaNet. Most people don't realize the OS in the dreamcast was created by microsoft so they were already knowledgeable in the space even before the original xbox launched. However Sony saw msft in the same light they saw Sega; as a non threat. Now that they see the potential of the online space we'll see what they can do when they take it serious but make no mistake sony could have very well took the online space to new heights had they took the dreamcast serious back in 1999...

But I'm totally behind Sony in making sure that everything is perfect when it does come out. Yes, Xbox Live is great, but where can it go from here? Thats why there isnt any spring update,, their is nothing else they could possibly do to make Live any better.

Actually, I just bit my tounge in the last statement. They could make it better in many ways. I'm one of the few people that own all 3 next gen consoles, and Ive experianced both the psn and xbox live. They both have their pros and cons. One way to make it better is to make it faster. It seems as though you have to go into the dashboard for almost everything, including the simple process of inviting friends to a game.

One example is when playing call of duty. You can invite your friends but its a longer process on the xbox cause you have to get into your xbox live dashboard and invite every friend one person at a time. I have like 20 people I play with on a regular basis, and that is almost to much for me just to invite some friends.

The thing that I think the playstation is gonna get right is how fluid and accesible everything is gonna be. The XMB is so easy that even my mom and stepfather can do it, and they are old. No page flipping, just scrolling through everything flawlessly without skipping a beat. I honestly think thank the in game xmb could be better than the xbox's dashboard if done correctly, and that my friend, is what they are doing right now. Sony may take time to do things, but they do things well when they start something.

Take a look at your feature set then to now...same thing is happening with PS3.

Why is everybody trying to defend PSn saying its only young. The original XBL was 10 times better than PSN. People are saying that PSN will evolve, what do you think XBL will stand still. I shudder to think how good the next iteration of XBL will be becuase if the leap is as significant as the last my god what are we in store for.

I been saying this from Day 1. Sony is all talk and no action.

What I care about MOST is the gameplay, not all this extra fluff like themes and movies and whatnot. I want lag free, fast, solid gameplay. Considering I get games like Resistance with DEDICATED servers, when $50 a year won't get me that, well.... it's a give and take.

What Sony needs to do to compete is initiate STANDARDS so that PS3 features aren't gimped. IE, all online games must support voice chat for instance. Do that, and they will already be well ahead.

But it's not good enough I guess. PS store remake was a start and announcing Home with the beta & trophies was a huge step in the right direction. Were getting more demos and were seeing more games on PSN but it's still not enough. These updates a week are sometimes a joke. I know Sony is going with the whole quality over quantity but we should be seeing more PS1/PS2 games being released on the PSN every week.

The Video store will be out in July, the ingame XMB is trophies will be out next week, and the PS3 is the best bluray player on the market...and with all these awesome movies comming out this summer...you will want to see them in 1080 and DTS HD Master Audio sound...something not even remotely possible on the XBox 360.

The Xbox 360 is only $50 less than the PS3...the non harddrive versions of the xbox 360 are useless...you need a harddrive to download demos, movies, ect..so the premium model is the min version and its harddrive is too small at 20GBs...so you really have to go with the elite..so you are paying even more money for the Xbox 360..

A 160 GB 2.5 inch industry standard SATA drive is less than $70 these days...more than enough storage space...It is a $179 for a microsoft xbox 360 harddrive and it is only 120 GBs...so how is getting ripped off?

The PSN network has never crashed...unlike xbox live..
The PSN network allows you to have accounts in Japan and Europe...or anywhere there is a PSN store. You can redownload your games to 5 different PS3 5 different times, you can even share cost of DLC on most games. You can not do that on xbox live.

Reason 1. I can play my PS3 right now. I cannot play my 360 because it does not work (for the second time). Popped in GTA IV and less than 5 minutes into the game, my video card died. I think Hardware reliability does stick in the minds of some and the Past gen PS owners may be seeing this too.

Reason 2. What we know IS coming. Yes the delays suck and when they do arrive (Haze), sometimes they fall well short of expectations. But, for me, Haze was not why I got a PS3. Socom was. GoW was. GT5 was. FF XIII was. I know the things I want are coming and have confidence that they will be great (IMHO). The extra features the PS3 will have are the icing on the cake, but not the reason I got the system. I have patience so long as it's worth it. Sony has not messed up here (so far). Free Radical is a different story though.

who, like me, cant wait for Metal Gear 4 to arrive ;)

pan has a way to go to match content on xbl. No only in the game department but in the video department. Then on top of that it also needs a unified service, which psn is moving towards but it still has a way to go. But bake on topic, Sony does not know how to keep promises and it makes angry. Ive got my hopes up so many times to get shot down. They always over promise, it really take me away from the console.

If Sony will deliver on in-game XMB, and a video store this year, they will far surpass 360 in my book. They already have many unique games in the Store that aren't just crappy classics, but truly unique games like Fl0w, SSD HD, and Everyday Shooter. Many games already have dedicated servers, only on PS3, which is a GIGANTIC plus for all online gamers. Did I also mention that its free?

That's without Home. If Sony can deliver on Home then we have a phenomenal experience for FREE. If Sony can deliver on Home then PSN is now the landmark online service on consoles.

They are going to have to decide if they are going to push digital movie downloads or Blu-Ray. You can't have your cake and eat it too!

Xbox live cost about 7 cents a day. So what you want to but it does the job very well.

Sony should just suck in their pride and copy the hell out of Xbox live. I have been on Live since the beginning (I was an original beta tester back in 2002) and they take feedback seriously. Live is quick and easy to navigate. I wish they would license it out to Sony. As far as Home goes, I really feel the they are being too ambitious for their own good.. It sounds like too much trouble if you as me.

I own a PS3 and with all the high components (Blu-Ray,Bluetooth, Cell) you figure that they would have a put a damn 3 dollar headset/mic in with the system? No body has mics when you play online and a lot of folks don't even realize that you can sync a bluetooth headset to the PS3 in like 5 seconds.

I'm tired of waiting on SONY, xbl is where i order my movies an enjoy better online gaming. Home has been delayed again, and I bet ya the movie store gets delayed again and again. Sony has a habit of starting this too slowly. They will be fine, once the get that home out. The have been focusing on it too much. As for the content, i would really appreciate if the add backward compatibility to PS3 40 gig and offer PS2 games downloadable via PSN and add more PS1 games.

The author actually made a strong point to avoid this fact and literally stated "more content makes you FEEL like there is just more out there." That statement doesn't make any sense, since the author also states, "Can someone else make the argument that Xbox Live has a lot of old games on it that feel like filler? Absolutely."

Sony's approach is to push for innovative IPs built for an online network, while Microsoft's approach is to simply fill it with content. This is the reason Microsoft is trying to delete titles from its roster; it already has a reputation for not caring about the quality of its content.

The fact that they entirely revamped the look of the store, as well as the navigation style, within the first 18 months of launch is amazing. Where's their elusive firmware updates?

Sony has given us native Divx support, as well as Youtube recording abilities (developers are already implementing this). Microsoft on the other hand has simply been acting arrogant and continue to claim that XBL is superior. But with this mentality, they're simply going to fall further behind. I'm sure even if PSN gets a 2:1 subscriber advantage over XBL, Microsoft will continue to claim dominance.

As home, in-game xmb nor the video store are needed in any way to actually play games I don't see the problem. It'll get here when it gets here. These features are fee. It seems like we are just getting a little greedy an impatient.

I still believe PSN is just starting in it's early stages of development.
It took Microsoft 4 years to get XBL where it is today and yet PSN is doing almost everything XBL is doing in 1 year do the math.
PSN might not have video downloads yet but they have the next best thing right now new innovative games only found on the PS3/PSN.

Innovative download games like Flow, Warhawk, Super Stardust HD, Pixel Junk Monsters, Toy Home, with more coming all the time.

Things that XBL doesn't have on their service.
1.) Add ons to their games.
2.) Full 1080P Games.
3.) Eye Toy Games and accessories.
4.) Theme backgrounds for your console.

Things that XBL has right now but the PSN doesn't.
1.) XMB
2.) Downloadable movies and shows.
3.) More variety of classic games from older consoles.

Solution for the PSN to get these features.
Firmware 2.4 coming out on June 16th, 2008 has the XMB feature, plus trophy support for Home.
Video store will comeback the XBL Video service.

I just want to play my games online. On the PC it's free to do that, and I expect the same for the console.

With these new updates coming this month PSN will be alot better, and I think everyone is forgetting that PSN is free and is a really good service. Online gaming from the PSN isnt really laggy so why do people complain about PSN. Sure we have to wait for these updates but if they came out now and wernt good enough we would just keep complaining about the service.

I do agree however that Sony is taking too long to bring Home out, Home looks finished to me, cant see why they cant just bring it out now then we can download future updates.

I'm sorry, PSN is not as bad as this guy makes it out to be. The store in particular has never really been "abysmal".
Updates, the store, and the web browser have been slow, yes. Sony needs to fix the speed, but none of these features are unuseably slow. The new store design also goes a lonnnng way down the road of improvement.
The store has had a problem with a lack of new content, sure. Do you actually want your store to be loaded to the teeth with shovelware like "Yaris"? I appreciate most of the games offered in the PS Store. I still play Calling All Cars and Super Stardust because they are fun games. While PS1 game selections are severely lacking, I see no reason to fill up the store with crap games just because the weekly update looks a little light. The author says he wants more weekly content, but cites the Go! games, and ToyHome as something he's not "really supposed to be exicted about".
There has been glitches and bugs in the online gaming part, yup. Warhawk started off pretty rough, but all the leaderboard, rank, and "game full" bugs have been patched and squashed. 99.9% of the time i can get into any game in my collection, my mic works, and there is generally little to no lag.
I agree that the PSN has had a rocky start, but with 2.40 allegedly coming correct with in-game functions we've all been waiting for (and soon too) i see this article as instantly irrelevant. Wipeout HD, Socom, Dark Mist, LBP, Siren, HOME (it should be interesting, definitely original, and possibly innovative). They're all coming, and whether you realize it or not, they are coming soon. I for one am very happy with the service, and everything Sony is attempting to do with it. Even if they only hit the mark 75% of the time, that 75% is pretty good.

is doing well online and "surviving" because it is free online. If it put out the stuff they were planning putting out on time or when they said the earliest was or w/e you want to call it, they could have given a huge hit to the LIVE service, But i think they missed a very good chance to hit microsoft hard. The newest features will still kick some @ss, but i dont think it will have as great of an impact like if home and the movie store and all that released last fall or this spring.

People need to stop complaining XBOXlive went through the same thing when the XBOX first came out.
People need to remeber Rome was not made in a day XBOXLIVE wasn't made in a day and PSN is not made in a day these things take time.

PSN has been a drag. I'm sincerely disappointed by it's underwhelming selection of titles and features.

I have an awesome machine that is capable of doing so much, but lacks support from it's proprietary masters.

I hope that the next console-war is about openness, so communities can fill in and provide software solutions as Sony is obviously understaffed this time around.

It sounds like people have forgotten the growing pains that XBL had during its first few years.

It was hardly the robust experience it is today, in fact XBL suffered from some major issues like bad connections, lag, lockups, players randomly not being able to communicate with other players.

XBL also did not have all the features it currently has. These features were developed and perfected over time using us as the beta testers.

The fact is we XBL users have been paying (full price)for a system that has only just recently become worth it.

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. Yoshida played a huge role in shaping the brand, so whatever the reason, his impact is undeniable.

If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. Andrew House and Jack Tretton did great work, but they also didn't try to fundamentally change the PlayStation DNA. Ryan oversaw the death of Japan Studio and a live service direction.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

There's another guy who recently "retired" as CEO of another large gaming company, after doing a dismantling job as lead for well over a decade.

seems legit, the business man, fires the one who has ideas to move the business forward.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.
