Does E3 Still Matter?

It's been a weird pre-E3 month. Companies like Microsoft, EA, and Bethesda have made big announcements before the big show. Nintendo's not even doing an official press conference at all. Is there still a point to E3? Or has it become a walking, talking, slowly dying dinosaur?

Clearly it matters ... Folks are foaming at the mouth for the content that will come from the conference. It's a huge chance to get consumers excited for your companies product (or lose their excitement)

Just because companies have new ways to divulge info, doesn't mean e3 has lost its importance. There is no better way to get media coverage.

ArchangelMike4417d ago (Edited 4417d ago )

I agree completely . There's no other gaming trade show that's more important than E3. The successful reception of the PS4, and the unsuccesful reception of the xboxone, were in large part due to their E3 2013 impressions (alongside other things like price etc). There's no denying there was fan backlash for MSoft after their E3 showing last year. I'm prety sure they know the impact a good or bad E3 showing has going forward.

Arkardo4417d ago

E3 will always be the platform to where every brand has to show the commitment to gamers and blow each other up, from here every one will either love you or bash you until next E3 shows up.

So be prepared and beat the s*** out of everyone with games! Let's go!

jmac534417d ago

Very true. I preordered the PS4 right after their conference.

LOGICWINS4417d ago

"The successful reception of the PS4, and the unsuccesful reception of the xboxone, were in large part due to their E3 2013 impressions (alongside other things like price etc)."

But the Xbox didn't have an unsuccessful reception. It had the best launch of any other Xbox in history despite the bad press and it having the most expensive launch price of any other Xbox.

Despite MS having a lackluster E3 showing according to the people who saw the conference, the XB1 ended up selling very well in the real world. It didnt do PS4 numbers, but it did a hell of a lot better than people expected. If anything, all you've proven is that E3 DOESN'T matter.

How can anyone ask this question after last year's E3

It really doesn't.

The internet has already proven to be a viable promotional tool for games. There isn't really a reason for the major console companies and developers to all travel to LA just to reveal trailers and such

Farcry 4 was announced earlier out of the blue and had people talking about it and preordering. The same would have happened if it were announced at E3

maniacmayhem4417d ago

All E3 is really is a chance for devs/publishers to come together and show off what they have in store to others and journalists.

And just like GDC it's a chance for industry employees to get together and party at company hosted events with open bars and free food.

It's also a reason why companies pay for "event coordinators".

LOGICWINS4417d ago (Edited 4417d ago )

I agree. There isnt anything "wrong" with E3, but I would propose that instead of gamers foaming at the mouth until June, why not have a new reveal every month? ND could release a dev diary on PSN for UC4 one month and next month it would be Guerilla Games turn to show us their progress on their new game.

The same thing can be done with MS' first party studios.

And of course, all these dev diaries would need to be streamed at 1080p.

@Maniac- But couldnt publishers simply post dev diaries on Youtube and just show their stuff off that way? I'd rather those millions go towards making games instead of hiring event coordinators or hiring Drake to do a 3 minute rap on stage about a sports game.

Bigpappy4417d ago (Edited 4417d ago )

So your point is to go with online PR and forget about face to face and hands on impressions? I think you and the writer have lost your minds.

Just having the huge crowds show up, attracts the mainstream media. That penetrates much farther than sending tweets on the internet.

HeavenlySnipes4417d ago

You're aware that devs already invite the press to pre-conference events where they show off their games right? How do you think previews of games are made?

Journalists from IGN, Gamespot etc have already seen games like Arkham Knight in action from the devs themselves months ago.

The purpose of E3 is now just about theatrics, it serves no real purpose in promoting games because the internet already does that.

maniacmayhem4416d ago

@Logic

Yes Logic they definitely could but for whatever reason they don't.

I've been to many E3's and it's all a hob nob fest, also its just to show off what every company is working on at the moment.

If you ever go to one of these events it's like a party. EA, Activision, Sony and others all throw huge press parties where you get super wasted as event hands tell you all the cool things your company is doing.

mhunterjr4416d ago

No, man your forgetting about the logistics. Debuting a game online will rarely mimic the potential impact of having thousands of journalists and fans see you product up close.

Inviting a few key press to the studio is nice. But it doesn't remove the need to get worldwide exposure, and get unbiased feedback. There's no better way to gauge how interesting your product is than to have it fighting for exposure against hundreds of other titles at the same time.

E3 matters...just not to most gamers. The Day One-ers who bought a PS4 at launch day/week because they saw the February/E3 conference will only account for 1-2% of the PS4s install lifetime install base.

The other 98% will buy a PS4 on word of mouth/advertising, pretty much the same way they buy every other piece of tech.

mhunterjr4416d ago

Without e3, do you think the word of mouth would have been as strongly skewed towards Sony?

Visiblemarc4417d ago

I agree 100%

Imo, it matters more than ever, as taste-makers have more influence than ever and there are more of them than ever, with the largest reach they've ever had.

ChickeyCantor4416d ago (Edited 4416d ago )

"Clearly it matters ... Folks are foaming at the mouth for the content that will come from the conference."

In this day and age gamers don't need E3. Sony and MS could have their own "Direct" like Nintendo does. What diff does it really make?

Most of us don't go to E3 anyways.

E3 is just a big meeting point for developers and publishers. It's the "behind closed presentations" that matter most to them.

mhunterjr4416d ago

'Directs' don't replace the impact of hands on impressions from thousands of gamers and journalist across the world. It also doesn't allow for a way to gauge reception against the competion in real time.

Timesplitter144417d ago (Edited 4417d ago )

Yeah, but the last few E3s havent been too great. The excitement and potential are still there though.

I think it's due to the fact that the last 2-3 years were the end of last gen and the beginning of current-gen. So most of the announcements were launch titles or necessary sequels to end last generation

Funny considering Bruce left half way through development and now we get told there was an internal conflict with the story direction.

Makes you think…

HectixRose66d ago

I think it was good decision, if he was still alive, he would have been a mascot just like Kratos, drake and many others. These old dudes gotta die for new characters to take center stage with their own storyline. They keep dragging the emotional baggage into many sequels and eventually the story just turns into absolute shit show.

JEECE66d ago

It was ironic because people complained heavily about the story in the Uncharted games not having sufficient stakes because all the key characters always survived, despite the dangerous situations they were always in. Then ND killed a character in a more serious series and everyone lost their minds. Just shows that people don't always really want the thing they say they want.

CantThinkOfAUsername65d ago

I thought the more common complaint about Uncharted franchise was how the main cast are the good guys acting so nonchalantly while killing hundreds in cold blood (aka the dissonance between gameplay and story cutscenes). They just did it again in Part II.

Soy66d ago

Didn't have to kill him. Just have them part ways or Joel can "retire," whatever.

DarXyde66d ago

I don't think he would necessarily need to become a mascot (and besides, technically, I'd say Ellie is... So regardless, someone was going to be).

From a narrative perspective, I do think it has a similar effect to Ricky dying in Boyz N Da Hood: very likeable character, and you're really motivated to see the get back—in this case, it's more intense because it's an interactive experience. Most people hated Abby, but I get what they were after with portraying the cycle of violence and revenge—unfortunately, the game appears to want to take the side of the bad people.

But I will say that if Joel survived, it does become harder to tell an interesting story. What COULD have happened is an exploration into the rift between Joel and Ellie after the trolley dilemma events of the first game. It could have been interesting to see Abby out for revenge at the same time Ellie hated Joel.

Ashunderfire8666d ago

Sorry just had to say this lol! RICKYYYY!

Man Cuba Gooding Jr was miscast in that movie, but that part was cringey it was sad and funny at the same time man.

Ashunderfire8666d ago (Edited 66d ago )

I understand but the way they went about killing Joel, was poorly executed. Even the show of the Last of Us games tried to improved it, but it was just as bad. Well at least Joel got to know the reason why he had to die, before the death happened in the show. That part gave us the full context, but the game just let it happen with no pay off.

Joel death should have been a midway thing through the story, so we at least get to play him a little more with Ellie. Abby didn’t need to be this Hulk looking woman, but more like the show Abby which is a beater idea in my opinion.

The only ND game that was so disappointing to me I couldn't finish it.

pwnmaster300066d ago

Honestly as much as I loved the game, they could have just not killed him off.
I get it creator vision and all but killing a character that made you millions is just wrong imo. At least have him go down fighting.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle66d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted
