Fracture dev: "Wii does not have the processing power"

Even though the Wii has seen a huge amount of success and currently leads the console war by a large margin, its hardware limitations do mean that it often misses out on the graphically rich games found on Xbox 360 and PS3.

Speaking to VideoGamer.com in London last week, LucasArts assistant producer Jeffrey Gullett confirmed what we already kind of knew about the reason behind no Fracture on Wii.

Apparently they didn't see how awesome Madworld looks ... When there is technical limitations, Good Developers make up for that with Art and Innovation ... and thats Madworld ;)

MK_Red6565d ago (Edited 6565d ago )

I'm also a fan of MadWorld but this is different. Fracture's gameplay is based on advanced terran physics that Wii simply can't handel.
It's just like The Force Unleashed and Battlefield Bad Company. The Wii version of TFU doesn't have Euphoria (As seen in GTA4) or DMM that are the main attractions of the game. And Battlefield BC is not on Wii because a fully destructable enviroment like BC simply wasn't possible on Wii.

The thing is that Wii is a good machine and has some great games but when it comes to processing power, Wii is simply behind PS3 and 360.

Baka-akaB6565d ago

You dont even know how madworld actually play . it might as well be an artsy yet crappy project (wich i glady doubt) .
You're also comparing apples and tomatoes ...
obviously the main idea behind fracture , aka "terraforming" needs raw power ...

solidt126565d ago

Mad World looks good, but it is a black and white game without all the crazy physics that are going on in Fracture.

SolidSnake936565d ago

There are some limitations that developers cannot make up for. I don't think that the Wii could even run a port of Fracture.

ChickeyCantor6565d ago

" I don't think that the Wii could even run a port of Fracture."
When you port something you break it down or polish it up to make it work on the PLATFORM.

If there was a Port they would have programmed it differently.

Rute6565d ago

Wii definitely couldn't handle Fracture with the level of graphics seen on PS3 and X360, but to say whether Wii is or isn't able to handle the main aspects of the physics of Fracture, would require extensive knowledge in programming, especially optimization. Even Gamecube had games with terraforming, like Doshin The Giant.

Rute6565d ago

I just realised that the term terraforming is not properly used, because it means "the hypothetical process of deliberately modifying its atmosphere, temperature, surface topography or ecology to be similar to those of Earth in order to make it habitable by humans" (Wikipedia) Is that the reason why I got one disagree?

Doshin The Giant (GC) or Fracture do not include terraforming, but they both include the feature of deforming terrain. Does someone disagree with me on those facts?

MK_Red6565d ago

Rute I understand what you mean but even that's not possible. The Force Unleashed team did try but they couldn't run Euphoria and DMM on Wii with even sub-PS2 graphics because Wii simply can't handle that. Same goes for Fracture.

Wii simply can't have some features. So far, PS3 and 360's have mainly been used only for graphics but games like Fracture and TFU are ones that are simply impossible on Wii (The Wii version of TFU lacks both engines and is a rather different game that a different team has made). Same goes for Battlefield Bad Company, there are some gameplay features that Wii can't do, no matter in what level of graphics.

Rute6565d ago

Well, Wii is capable of terrain deforming. Doshin The Giant, as I mentioned, is a Gamecube game and features terrain deforming. Are there some features which are essential concerning the physical part of Fracture that have NOT been realized in some form in GC or Wii games?

What I meant in the earlier posts was that while it is a fact that Wii couldn't handle the same physics engine as the PS3/360 versions of Fracture, it doesn't necessarily mean that similar physical effects in a hypotethical Wii version of the game couldn't be portrayed using "Wii friendly" coding. There are lots of Wii games with advanced physics like the recent hit Boom Blox.

MK_Red6565d ago

I see Rute. I know understand better. You're saying that Fracture's engine may not work on Wii but a different "Wii friendly" engine could cause such effects, right?

Well, that's possible to some to some degree but from what I've seen, I still think Fracture's effects would be impossible to do on Wii.
As for Boom Blox, as much as I love it, the physics engine it uses is simple Havoc and not the new version. The latest Havoc physics engine is exclusive to PS3 and 360 (Boom Blox uses an old version that the Wii version of Force Unleashed is gonna use as well).

BrotherNick6564d ago

If that game could do it on the gc, Fracture could if they made it from the ground up. But there's little to no market for it, so it's uneconomical. From a business standpoint it is right, sucks for us wii fans though.

i have wii and i know what it can and cannot do .
i have fully excepted this also can they downgrade a game for the wii?

GFahim6565d ago

cant they atleast go with a different art direction?

Baka-akaB6565d ago (Edited 6565d ago )

What's the point of the game then ?

And what's the point of moaning about crappy wii ports like Farcry then ?

You cant expect a dev to have that kind of ambitious project needing much horsepower , and then ask him to just do a cartoony or downgraded less ambitious version of it .

Things like that are part of the reason why 3rd party wii kinda sucks . It its just a downgrade and doesnt benefits from the wii , there is no point .

good are good games, graphics just push(cod4,bioshock,uncharted)
or rare cases that graphics actually make games worse(gta4)

Last Chance to Play: Fracture

"ZL: The reception was less than underwhelming. Fracture is one of those games that has already been forgotten; “terrain deformation” failed to impress gamers, the struggle between the Pacificans and the Alliance (though I’m not sure who they’re aligned with) inspired no one, everyone hated the main character and the online servers are host to nothing more than tumbleweeds."

Games in a time of climate change

We're well into the first week of August, and the summer's hottest days could be just ahead. There's still a debate being waged over climate change policies proposed to help curb its effects, but in some video game that debate is over and the effects of climate change lead to a bleak future. We speak to Dr. David Robinson, New Jersey State Climatologist and Professor in the Department of Geography at Rutgers University, to find out if these video games' vision of a post climate change future holds more fact or fiction.
