Digital Foundry: hands-on with Project Morpheus

Digital Foundry: It's been almost a year since we first heard about the existence of a Sony virtual reality headset. What began as a vague rumour about a potential Oculus Rift PS4 hook-up gradually shifted into something much bigger - and infinitely more exciting. The hardware we've tested and the demos we've played confirm that this is no mere Oculus copy: there are commonalities in the technology, but Sony has its own distinct vision for VR, and a console-specific strategy for getting the most out of the hardware.

"The hardware we've tested and the demos we've played confirm that this is no mere Oculus copy: there are commonalities in the technology, but Sony has its own distinct vision for VR, and a console-specific strategy for getting the most out of the hardware."

"But having sampled the Morpheus prototype, the differences - though subtle - are actually quite profound. Sony is behind Oculus in one key respect, the display, but substantially ahead elsewhere."

Great article, and good to hear it will be unique enough to hopefully secure a place in the market. After all PC is a different market to consoles, so although a lot of the same games will appear on both, the opportunity for unique experiences on both is vast.
-----

"PlayStation Move is Sony's secret weapon - it's the most fully-formed 3D interface available and works brilliantly in the demo we played, giving you 'hands' and allowing you to physically interact with the environment."

"it's perhaps surprising to discover that a truly transformative element of the proposition comes from a piece of hardware that you might already own: PlayStation Move. Our aspirations for the hardware were never fully realised, but the hook-up with Morpheus is a match made in heaven"

That's all the proof I need to hear to know that this kind of input is NEEDED to get more out of the experience and add to the immersion. Plus they don't need to iterate the thing. It works well enough to never have to get people to spend more if they already have one.

All I need now is for Bethesda/ Sony to announce FALLOUT 4 with Morpheus/Oculus compatibility and I'm 100% sold. The possibilities....

MRMagoo1234373d ago

Yup couldnt agree more, this was such a good article and out of the blue too lol I am really excited to buy the morpheus and try it out, i can imagine sony are striking up deals all over the place and probably making some pretty awesome games first party too.

I have a feeling this VR thing is really going to be a game changer for the betterment of gaming, future here we come.

I find it hard to believe that anyone is not excited about the possibilities even fanboys of the other consoles.

Sitdown4373d ago

I have not bought into the VR deal, but am open if it advances or enhances gaming. Now with that said, this shouldn't really catch on, because n4g gamers said they don't want motion controls....they want to just game from a controller as normal.

MRMagoo1234373d ago

VR is not the same thing as waving your body around in front of a camera, the immersion is the cool thing about it, it makes you feel like you are IN the world, gtfo with the trying to start some fanboy hypocrites war crap.

n4g gamers ? wtf does that even mean ? are all gamers on this site one entity like the borg ? does no one have different opinions ?

Trying to instigate an argument is just plain trolling.

As a gamer this is the kinda thing I have always wanted, it may lead to holodecks in the far distant future and who the hell wouldnt want that?? Its just exciting prospects and gets the imagination going.

MasterCornholio4373d ago

Morpheus doesn't need motion controls to function. You can just use your DS4.

Seriously next time do your research before you troll.

Sitdown4373d ago (Edited 4373d ago )

Sorry that you feel that stating a trend equates to a "fanboy hypocrites war crap" or "trying to instigate an argument" for the sake of trolling. Because that would serve what purpose? Nobody is debating the immersion factor or how cool it could be; or at least I'm not. But here is the reality, this board allows discussion, which for you is interpreted as an argument. Whether you like it or not, there were a lot of vocal people who were against motion controls, so it would be interesting to see if they now take up a different stance. Notice I did not say ALL n4g gamers. And guess what, technically we are one entity, because we are all part of the n4g community.... And the collective voice of the majority often rings out through loss or addition of bubbles, temporary ban, etc.. So in the future the next time you address someone's post, try to debate what they said, not what you wanted it to say.

@mastetcornholio
Do you think there might be a reason why the camera tracks the movement of your head, where the sensors exist? which in this case, movement equals motion.

Next time do your research before being so quick to accuse others of what you yourself is first to do.

Oh gosh, I apologize everybody for the unedited wall of text.... Must be really bored this morning.

Wh15ky4373d ago (Edited 4373d ago )

"Now with that said, this shouldn't really catch on, because n4g gamers said they don't want motion controls...."

So the people you refer to as "n4g gamers" decide what gaming tech catches on?

@ below
That's not just n4g, that's the internet. It's amazing the amount of rubbish people can spout when hidden behind the anonymity of their online persona, your comments are perfect examples of this.

Sitdown4373d ago (Edited 4373d ago )

@wh15ky
Yes, that is exactly what I'm saying. /s
Just in case you are serious, let me break it down for you. Often times users of n4g make definitive statements, believe they are indicative of the gaming market as a whole.... So in their minds they do control the market. As for me, I don't subscribe to this theory... That is why the statement was more tongue in cheek about the flip flopping of this board. It would be nice to see people take a way to see approach, rather than be quick to shoot down potential developments in gaming.

What exactly am I hiding behind? Haha..Not that serious dude

Flutterby4373d ago

Why even bring it up in the first place if you aren't trolling ? There is no reason at all to even mention it besides to start arguments.

OT I really can't wait to see where VR goes from here very exciting times.

MysticStrummer4373d ago

"Now with that said, this shouldn't really catch on, because n4g gamers said they don't want motion controls....they want to just game from a controller as normal."

Move is a controller with buttons. That's one reason why it was always claimed to be better than Kinect by many PS fans.

I think a VR/Move combo could be a real game changer, but price is going to be the main hurdle.

Sitdown4373d ago (Edited 4373d ago )

I agree... I prefer the 1:1 accuracy of move. Already have two sets from the ps3... Just need the new camera and a price announcement. And thanks to Target's trade in deal last week, got plenty of credit to use.

Spotie4373d ago

What WAS the purpose in saying that, if not to troll? Why say something with context intentionally missing, so as to paint a misleading picture to anybody who reads what you say?

And then you go on, defending your words as if you don't know how inflammatory they are, as if you're right when you know you're not.

Of course, you'll use the fact that so many disagree with you to "prove" that the site is overrun with Sony fanboys, rather than the truth: that people disagreed with your purposely controversial comments, because they have more sense than to believe you.

+1 digitalraptor

You saved me the hassle of reading the artcile. :)

OT: Wow! Project is sounding so awesome O.O

DigitalRaptor4373d ago

No please do read the article. It offers a lot more insight.

I just thought I'd quote some interesting points made.

muttsurini4373d ago

I don't know if Bethesda will make a game for oculus since they filed a lawsuit against them.

Mrtemper4373d ago

These headsets really aren't meant for long sessions ie Fallout 4. Even little things like not moving your head while you turn your body with a controller are very disorienting. Not to mention, your eyes can get dry from not blinking. Trust me, I've had the Oculus Dk1 for about 6months now.

Mrtemper4373d ago

With that said, cockpit view only games aren't disorienting at all. This isn't a cockpit demo but its the same concept. https://share.oculusvr.com/...

I really felt like I was there and wanted to look at everything. :D

Sitdown4373d ago (Edited 4373d ago )

ramiuk14373d ago

cheaper than a sex change

Sitdown4373d ago

Haha....and gets you out of the year of counseling too I guess.

ibrake4naps4373d ago

Prolly overall cheaper with less drama!

Volkama4373d ago

As the owner of a real woman I can totally understand his perspective :|

UltraNova4372d ago

@Volkama

As the owner of a real woman as well I can definitely see why VR porn could be "superior" to the real thing, well kinda, you see sweet sweet silence wins over bitching anytime any day.

Of course this is just one's perspective..

Are a bunch of games, some of which are nearly 10 years old not one being from 2026. Barely one from 2025.

I do like the irony of the closing paragraph though, "Why VR Adventure Games are Thriving". Really buddy?

mooreneco2132d ago

That’s because it’s his favourite VR adventure games thus far, a great game always a great game regardless of age - Half life 2/ Ocarina of time - are old but still among the greatest games of all time. The irony of it is several are from last year, depending on platform, have you even played VR?
