$5K PC Takes On $4.6M Supercomputer

Antwerp (Belgium) - Recent advances in general purpose GPU computing are beginning to shift perceptions in supercomputing applications. Belgian researchers have assembled a relatively simple enthusiast PC with an emphasis on graphics processing capability, which beats a multi-million dollar supercomputer in its target application.

In for one! Lol.

Technology advances so quickly, as soon as you create something its out of date the next day.

Mcrmarcher6562d ago

Advances in Technology never cease to amaze me.

This story is a major blow at Intel.

Because this further proves Nvidia's statements about CPU's being outdated and slowly not being needed anymore, and that GPU's are superior processors.

Bolts6561d ago

How much crack do I have to smoke in order to believe this possibility? The four 9800 GX 2 were used in rendering tomography, so naturally they would help edge out a mainframe from 2005, duh. On the other hand they would be completely useless if this same computer was tasked with handling the billing of an airline or computational astro physics.

The CPU isn't going anywhere, a good PC need both processors.

Kakkoii6561d ago

That's only because there isn't a framework built to handle those kinds of processes with GPU's.

That's why Nvidia invented and is improving CUDA.

2005 wasn't long ago... And it doesn't matter.. Take 2 of Intel's top of the line Quad-core CPU's and try, it will suck immensely still.

GPU's are a more advanced type of CPU. You could build an operating system that only runs on the GPU, and it would be much faster. And then there would be no need for a CPU. CPU's are slowly becoming less useless with Nvidia's efforts.

dam that pretty fckin sweet

Pretty isolated testing... AMD could pull out one of 2000 tests vs Intel that it actually wins in and claim victory.

Pretty bad article imho.

Kakkoii6561d ago

Wtf are you talking about?

What does this have to do with AMD VS Intel?

This has to do with GPU's vs CPU's

Guwapo776561d ago

I was using AMD and Intel as an example.

A multitude of tests could have been run, as most GPU and CPU test are conducted in. I know this wasn't the only benchmark/test that was ran. In one of two benchmarks the 5K GPU beats the supercomputer.

This is something that has been talked about for years in how GPUs have a substantial advantage in floating point calculations vs CPUs. I want to see other benchmarks bolstering these claims into real world advantages.

Basically, these article only teased us with the possibilities of the GPU. Another huge reason I can't wait to see AMD's future CPU Fusion (CPU and GPU on a single die).

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing18d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9218d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit18d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing18d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9218d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
