Why The next Nintendo Console Will Be Digital-Only

Sean Cleaver: "There’s a lot of rumours circulating that Nintendo are going to announce a new console at this years E3 in June.

I am going to come right out with a bold statement. This will be the first major console to ditch optical and disc media drives and go fully digital."

I dunno, man. Remember when Microsoft tried digital-only? It was a risky move for which gamers weren't ready just a year ago. In the wake of the WiiU's market failure, Nintendo might not want to take too many risks. Then again, I guess E3 really IS all about surprises.

When a console goes all digital, retailers aren't gonna get those software sales profit and it is a bigger profit than selling hardware. And in the case of Gamestop and others, the more lucrative used game market. The only reason any retailer is supporting any console is so they can sell their games and if there's no software to sell because a console goes all digital, there's no point for them supporting it and Nintendo is not exactly in the position of playing the market god here seeing how abysimal the Wii U is doing.

Unlike pc gaming, where hardware is non-standard, consoles need retailers to push them to consumers, period.

Just look at how huge a success was the PSP Go! And look at the tremendous reception the Xbone got with their digital plan. The market is all set and ready and all digital is the way to go! THAT, people, is what we call as sarcasm!

I can't see it any time soon but regarding MS they also had the always online DRM, poor PR, blatantly insulted the consumer and didn't really give you a good reason to go digital. As an example Steam on the PC does incredibly well because it has an offline mode, tons of sales year round, its free and works good.

If Nintendo choose to do this I'd hope they'd talk with Gabe Newell since he loves Nintendo.

An all digital console will be for china. The digital model keeps popping up because of apple and google. Nintendo could be trying to make a digital marketing and fuse that to their brother hood of consoles where one game is bought but playable on all nintendo os enabled consoles.

weekev154385d ago

No gen 9 console will go digital only. Its the same as mp3 and cds. Yes the market may shift towards a bigger market share for digital offerings, however it will never replace that feeling you get when you rip open the celephane of the beautifully detailed boxart to find a cd inside with more brilliant art adorning the disc.

Before popping it in and waiting for the day 1 patch to download and install while you eat your dinner.

Well said! I love physical media. Feels like actually owning something tangible. I think a digital only console will fail hard.

xpressyoself4385d ago

Which is why the industry will not move forward. Constantly pandering to the lowest common denominator

DryBoneKoopa854385d ago

When did consumer choice become the lowest common denominator for the industry? How does an all digital console push the imagination and immersion of games to an all time new high.

From my understanding of why PC gaming went all digital is because developers and consumers were tiered of having to install and switch 8 different floppy discs or 4 different CD's just so you can play the games. That WAS one of the great advantages to playing on a console was most games from developers were able to be played on one disc. For PC the only logical decision was to move games from Floppy/Discs to an all digital storage.

PC games are always exceeding the physical amount of storage that is contained on a disc. Digital has further helped PC because it does not constrain them to worry about the physical amount of storage that is available on a disc.

Console games have Blu-ray discs as a form of media now. Developers are able to craft the worlds and story's they need to tell without being to constrained with physical media.

To me some of the best games have come from developers who were faced with constraints and had to think outside the box.

Nintendo will be the last company to go fully digital... so no... not until the others have first.

GamingSinceThe80s4385d ago (Edited 4385d ago )

Plus Nintendo fan's are probably the biggest'' hoarders' oh I mean 'collectors' of games. At least that's how I it is for me.I like to put them all on my king size bed and roll around in them naked! Or fill my closet with them ,squeeze in and shut the door so I can swim in them like Uncle Scrooge in his money bin!Something you just can't do with digital games.lol

errr, no.

New title:

Why The Next Nintendo Console (or any other console) Will Not Be Digital Only - Because Xbox One.

People in gaming seem to have some of the shortest memories in society.

xpressyoself4385d ago

Gamers are whiney bitches who can't accept change even if it's better for them

Summons754385d ago

Yes not actually owning the game but the license that can be taken at a moments notice is better. Having to always be connected only to access said games is better. Having the digital prices locked and never come down (they are at full price years after most stores drop the prices and they rarely go on sale). Purchasing hundreds of dollars worth of games to be left behind when the next gens come out and eventually have servers shut down and lose the games forever is better.

There is A LOT wrong with digital only. Its not bad for one or two games, or cheap indies/arcade games but physical is never going away sorry to burst your bubble. Its the reason why DVD/blurays still exist despite online streaming smashing expectations, why you may ask, because people will always want to OWN there movies to watch whenever. Same applies for games.

BlackWolf4385d ago (Edited 4385d ago )

With digital only, we can lose ours games at the publisher's whim, and probably would have to keep logging in to a server for "authentication". We also lose the ability to trade and/or lend them, because they become effectively not our property, even tough we pay for the product. I could include the special feel of the box and it's content, but that's in the preferences page.

So, in conclusion, at least for me, it's not for the better of gaming. If that makes me a "whiney bitch", then so be it.

Also, it's whiny.

xpressyoself4385d ago

No they aren't going to take your game from you. Keep wearing your tin foil hats. Absolutely ridiculous. Lose the games forever are you serious??? How is that different then what happens now. You want to get your previous fucking ten dollars back from GameStop?? Don't be poor and this isn't an issue

N4g_null4384d ago

Xbox gamers seem to love live which is a sort of drm for the xbox, ps4 gamers seem to love ps plus it is a digital only solution. Free games are provided. Nintendo is about to have an system linked account system for digital bought games and everyone wants it. Unfortunately sony may not have the plus system for tvs since they are selling everything off but nintendo service could let you play games across handheld and console without having to own both like a vita ps4 setup.

What would be interesting if consoles adopted a phone contract ideas and let hardware evolve. I mean the nvidia voltar is going to have 8 gig flops and be upgradable! Would love to have a snes 4k or nintendo u 4k or just called the best the ultra! Let us buy our games using nfc cards with boxes or terabyte sd cards or disk.

Give the gamers the choice to go low end or super bleeding we don't even have that on pc edge. Then we can see who really wants what and if development teams are even ready for all that power.

U.S. patent examiner rejects Nintendo’s summoning characters patent as obvious: non-final ruling

The rejection is non-final (and even when such rejections are labeled as “final”, the process is far from over, given that there can be, at minimum, an appeal to the Federal Circuit).

Good, as they should! A game mechanic like that shouldn't be locked behind a patent, and Nintendo didn't invent it either.

PRIMORDUS47d ago (Edited 47d ago )

Nintendo wants to keep wasting money on bullshit lawsuits, real smart in this economy. They should put that money aside for other game projects. On the other hand, I don't care if they waste it all either, and they are screwed in the future maybe that will teach them a lesson.

The fact that you have ANY disagrees will forever baffle me. And to the (apparent) MAGA contingent that exists on this website, enjoy your 8-9 dollar gas.

AuraAbjure72d ago (Edited 72d ago )

Yes, they had better be pissed after Trump told them the way they rip off the USA is over.

EveryPlatformGamer73d ago

LOL I read this on gaff, will they refund the money back to the gamers? highly unlikely. Didn't they just raise prices and pass it onto the gamers? Only Nintendo would send out the Ninjas to the US government.

-Foxtrot73d ago

That’s what I was thinking, imagine them winning hypothetically, getting a s**t load of money back which they would have lost if they hadn’t raised their prices and it’s business as normal.

It would just mean people paid more for no reason since they got the money back anyway.

Outside_ofthe_Box72d ago (Edited 72d ago )

A lot of companies partially passed the cost to consumers instead of all of it. They would still have to at least pay that back to gamers, but we know that won't happen. What's also sad is that prices won't come back down after the initial hike caused by tariffs.

People didn't understand the full repercussions of tariffs. That alone should have cost him the presidency if people knew it was a permanent price hike for consumers

Inverno73d ago

The people should sue these companies for having to over pay cause of these tariffs.

Eonjay72d ago

Naw they should sue the government for forcing the tax to begin with. No one reasonably expects these companies to absorb the taxes. Many smaller companies tried and were shut down or faced to increase prices to try to maintain their business. The tariffs effect everyone.

Inverno71d ago

I meant it mostly as a joke cause we all know the costs of these tariffs were passed onto the consumer. But it's seems no matter how vocal we are here in the states our "representatives" don't seem to care enough to represent us. And things are about to get worse.

Killer2020UK71d ago

The companies were doing what the law required then to do, the tariffs however were illegally implemented. Usually it's criminals we punish, you seem to have different ideas 🤷‍♂️
