Using Sony's Playbook, Microsoft Will Attempt Xbox One's Turnaround

Today, Microsoft unleashed a torrent of news about Xbox One, tacitly revealing that it's learned plenty of lessons over the past six months. Its new console is experiencing success in the market, with over five million consoles shipped so far.

gary_m4386d ago (Edited 4386d ago )

Typical garbage coming from the fanboys at IGN.

The PS3 outsold the Xbox 360 by over 2 million units in its very first year on the market while being 200 dollars more expensive.

The Xbox One is getting absolutely destroyed by the PS4 in worldwide sales. The PS4 is already over 8 million while the Xbox One is around 3.8 to 3.9 million.

Sony's first price cut was thanks to the bleeding edge and incredibly expensive Blu-Ray diodes dropping in price to manufacture.

Microsoft's first price cut...just wait for NPD on Thursday. It will be obvious why this desperation dumping of Kinect and slashing of the Xbox One's price is happening just six months after launch.

DLConspiracy4385d ago

Just wanted to add that some of your numbers seem a bit off.

Xbox 360 2006 Total Units was 5 Million

http://vgsales.wikia.com/wi...

PS3 2007 Total units was 3.61

http://vgsales.wikia.com/wi...

While PS3 may have sold more in sales they did not sell more units. So it was just shy of 2 million in profit in comparison.

Also from what has been reported in many editorials. The Xbox One is about 4.3 million units or more past that sold. If you trust VGcharts it's sitting about 4.5 million units sold and PS4 is about 7.5 million units sold as of May 3rd.

http://www.vgchartz.com/

Just trying to be factual so we can all debate and spread proper information.

With all that said. I enjoy both consoles and this time around I don't have to worry about exclusives on either console. I realize that people are passionate about this stuff, but in the end if one of your friends had the other console you would sit down and play with them.

NewMonday4385d ago

@DLConspiracy

Sorry you can't be factual using VGChartz numbers

As for MS, they don't have a full year head start this time to build a lead, the best they can hop for even after cutting the price to $300 is a 1:1 ratio in NA and UK, Europe, Japan and the rest of the world are simply unwinnable.

And even the console sales will not bring much profit, because the XB1 will be the "second system" to only play occasional exclusives, gamers will naturally by 3rd party games on the superior system, that also means PSN will be the main service and few will pay for a second subscription in XBL

DLConspiracy4385d ago (Edited 4385d ago )

@NewMonday

I did say "If you trust VGcharts". I would say that's a lot more reputable than ZERO links and assumptions. The only link from VGchartz is current sales.

Consoles make money on the front end, but successful is breaking even in the hardware. I have said it numerous times but these consoles are now digital money boxes. That means the money they make on the back end outweighs the front in cost.

As it stands, I still prefer XBL over PSN. Chat quality is better for me there, but you have to own both to really know what I mean. No, it's not the mic I used. NO, it's not the headphones I have. Yes, I have tried everything I could but there is no work around.

Either way. it's a different experience for both. My PS4 is a nice single player box though.

truefan14385d ago

Are we just going to ignore direct ways sony has copied MSFT:
-internal hard drives
-psn modeled after xbl
-Indies self publishing from xbox arcade
-Apps on consoles
-PC like architecture
-trophies directly copied from achievements
-party chat
-Controller triggers

MSFT has brought a lot to the gaming industry, whether you like them or not.

sonarus4385d ago

i love how quick it is to dismiss vg chartz now when their data doesn't align with ones opinion.

I will be getting an xbox one at some point this summer more than likely. The ability to integrate seamlessly with cable is something that appeals to me somewhat especially now that some of the stuff behind the pay wall is coming out to play for free. However i will likely still do 90% of gaming on PS4 primarily due to personal preference

gary_m4385d ago (Edited 4385d ago )

LOL at linking to fake vgchartz numbers...

PS3 first year sales: 10.5 million
Xbox 360 first year sales: 8.5 million

The irony of someone trying use fake vgchartz numbers for the Xbox 360 is hilarious.

The hardcore Xbox fan who started the fake sales site did so for trying to use Microsoft's 'ship' numbers to retailers in an attempt to pretend they had 'sold' 10 million Xbox 360s in its first year on neogaf.

The neogaf admins perma-banned him for it and he ran off to create his fake sales site vgchartz so that no one could stop him.

choujij4385d ago (Edited 4385d ago )

@DLC Excuse me CF, those xbox figures are shipped, not sold.

@TF1 The PS2 (which launched before Xbox) included a HD bay to internally install a harddrive.

The triggers were directly ripped off from the Dreamcast controller, like many of the controllers buttons.

ramiuk14385d ago

thats SOLD TO RETAIL
sont has sold that many because stocks are still limited 7 months after release.
i would expect xbone to be below 4million,infact sales must be really bad for MS to do all the things they have done period!!

BlackTar1874385d ago

Truefan,

Dude
You realize most of your list has nothing to do with MS and almost all to do with the evolution of home consoles right?

It's like saying everyone copied Dreamcast or whoever had internet in the consoles first. It's not true no one copied they are industry standards thus they are natural evolution in the medium and not able to be tied to one company. 1st doesn't always make you founder.

gary_m4385d ago (Edited 4385d ago )

"trophies directly copied from achievements"

LOL!

http://www.darkspyro.net/ye...

Microsoft ripped off Sony's Spyro the Dragon's Sill Point system and just renamed it

"You've earned a Skill Point"

"You've unlocked a achievement"

DLConspiracy4385d ago (Edited 4385d ago )

@gary_m

Sorry then. I wasn't aware of a several year long debate about something that happened on Neogaf sometime ago once on a forum... I guess I should look for these numbers on Neogaf the one true place for information? I assure you I wasn't posting to belittle you and thought I responded quite politely to you.

OK, So where did your get your original figures? To back up your numbers? I can't find those figures anywhere.

"The PS3 outsold the Xbox 360 by over 2 million units in its very first year on the market while being 200 dollars more expensive.

The Xbox One is getting absolutely destroyed by the PS4 in worldwide sales. The PS4 is already over 8 million while the Xbox One is around 3.8 to 3.9 million."

Then there is this.

"Microsoft's first price cut...just wait for NPD on Thursday. It will be obvious why this desperation dumping of Kinect and slashing of the Xbox One's price is happening just six months after launch."

NPD (US numbers only?)

I see that you won't be able to respond back now, but perhaps someone else can fill me in on good ol' gary_m magical numbers. Links generally help at the start of the conversation so that we can choose to berate you or not based on your links you search online for.

BlackTar1874385d ago

Hi DL,

I'm not going to pretend like the #'s i'm abotu to provide are fact. I have no idea and hosnetly don't care enough to validate my post(I know what a lazy POS i am) but according to wiki

PS3
Quarter 3 (ending Dec 31, 2006) to Quarter 3 (ending Dec 31, 2007) PS3 sold : 10.53 Million

360
Quarter 2 (ending December 31, 2005) to Quarter 2 (ending Dec 31, 2006) 360Sold:7.6 Million

http://vgsales.wikia.com/wi...

http://vgsales.wikia.com/wi...

My Source. Again if these are wrong sorry again i did not fact check these with anything i typed in PS3 first year sales and xbox 360 first year sales and cliked the first link on both which was the same wiki

Honestly just give it up, Sony has the better rep so any, and any arguments will be useless.

If you want fanboy logic you should check out GAF.. some truely delusional people over there.

There are a number of threads open over there and after the announcement, the fanboys were making comments that the XB1 will retake the lead next month in NA and all of Europe by July.. and then they start yakking on about just wait until the cloud is turned on and DX12 comes out..

It's kinda sad that there are people like this nowadays.. what MS did yesterday was good but they still have a long way to go. baby steps.

mochachino4385d ago

Xbox has been 500 with Kinect and Titanfall and barely matched PS4. Everyone has to buy a game so it was really $440 with Kinect. The price drop is about $40 bucks in reality but I think many rather just pay the $40 to have the Kinect included. I don't even like Kinect and I'd pay $40 for it just for OS usage.

SteamPowered4385d ago

Well I may as well use my kinect as a doorstop. The support for it went from half-ass to full stop.

Death4385d ago

Sadly I have to agree with you on that. Support has been very slow with a 100% attach rate. Now that Kinect will no longer come with the hardware support is all but gone. They might as well offer a trade in program where you send your Kinect in and they send you a couple free PS4 games.

RiPPn4385d ago

Yeah it's pretty much a $100 harmony remote now with a camera and mic. Oh well, I won't be early adopting a Microsoft product again anytime soon, that's for sure.

Mugen904385d ago

I just know both systems have their strengths, weaknesses, and games they're known for. I made the mistake of getting a 360 because I like more adventure games, with the 360 it had much more action/FPS games compared to the PS3.

This time around I'm def getting a PS4 because I know down the line it will have more game styles I like compared to the Xbox One

MysticStrummer4385d ago

What they can't change is that XB1 was designed around a mandatory peripheral which they're now removing, and they sacrificed power in the name of that design. They won't be freeing up much in the way of system resources by dropping Kinect because they'll be selling it as an add on, and also that would really rub the early adopters the wrong way. Imagine the backlash...

I bet any dev who is in the middle of working on a Kinect game is in shock.

jmc88884385d ago

They shouldn't. Microsoft's unreal position about Kinect should not of been trusted. It was obvious to any 5 year old Forrest Gump with his head bashed in with a baseball bat what was going to happen.

Many people even thought it would be gone by E3, and it will be.

Remember folks, even with the mandatory inclusion, what games have come out for it? Barely anything.

Anyone that wants one, because a developer actually finds a cool use for it, can buy one. If not, then there is no reason to have one.

It wouldn't surprise me to see the Kinectless version still have a microphone. If it doesn't, Microsoft screwed up, because a $2 microphone can do 90 percent of what Kinect is usually asked to do in UI/games... Voice commands.

I know Microsoft said it was integral, but we all knew that was pure propaganda. Spin words don't change reality, and while Microsoft is a big corporation, they can't escape reality either.

I don't think this is the end for it, I think now it will have to live with it's ACTUAL utility. There is some, it's just niche. Microsoft wanted desperately for it to become a big way to play for everyone, but instead it's just a niche product. The fact they didn't realize this by 2013 is absolutely shocking. Like that Japanese WWII soldier who was marooned on the Philippines still thinking the war was on...in 1974!

It's like the TBTF banks. We bail them out with trillions of dollars to prop up their fraudulent and worthless derivatives but if we pulled away support we'd find that everything from 2008 is there and actually much worse, and all the big banks are insolvent (or broke and should be out of business). This is basically what Microsoft is doing, creating a fake environment for Kinect.

But we can separate the good from the bad with Glass-Steagall. So then you don't have the crap dragging down what's real, nor confiscate it through bail-in.

Same thing here. Instead of creating a completely fake situation, like pretending that if people have Kinect they'll use it. No, not really. Microsoft could claim that XX millions of people have Kinect, therefore you have all these people able to play your Kinect games.... in reality that number is bogus.

Most people don't want to play Kinect games, thus all those numbers the devs are supposed to rely on are FAKE FAKE FAKE. So the whole install base thing is complete bs.

If I was a dev, I would want TRUE numbers. I want to know how many people want to game with Kinect, not overall numbers. Because while they may have sold ~4 million Xbox One's....and have 4 million Kinect2's in the wild....how many of those are Kinect game players?

1 million? 500,000? 150,000?

What if you take away the casual people who were just trying it out?

N4g_null4384d ago

It's funny you bring up tbtf banks and no one mentioned sonys 1.4 billion lost. 74 million was on the games division. People are jumping ship. The system is collecting dust. If the kinect 2 cases the xbone a problem then it wouldn't be any different for the ps4 camera also.

If you think ms can't catch up to a sinking ship then you are wrong.

I know the ps fans wish that was nintendo that lost that much.... Yet that was sony. It's going to be hard to bribe 3rd party with no cash. Square is no longer under sony. They are not done cutting ethier.

Right now their banking section earn 65 percent of their profits not the ps gaming division. The days of the Walkman are gone fanboys. Sony is face first floating in the water. All the bad pr against ms and Nintendo won't get you anywhere.

jmc88884385d ago

What are the numbers the actual game dev's can use to determine whether or not to make a product?

Dev's should realize this, it isn't rocket science. Kinect2 sold separately will give Kinect devs a much better picture of big their audience really is. Because if you pay for it, you know it is far more likely to be used.

Kinect Sports Rivals isn't even in the Amazon top 100! In fact if you highlight JUST FOR XBOX ONE STUFF...it is the #30 highest selling Xbox One thing. 29 other Xbox One things are selling more, including lots of peripherals and pre-orders.

To be fair I think SNAP was the reason they went with DDR3, which meant they needed ESRAM (even if they could only fit 1/2-1/4th of the ESRAM they needed into the Xbox One).

But yeah, still the COGS might have led to a different direction if they didn't have the cost of Kinect in there.

But the devs should have known what they were walking into. Motion gaming has been dead for years. Wii/PS3/360 all showed this. That's what is crazy. Microsoft had years of data showcasing the public's waning interest motion gaming across all platforms, and they decide to force it on the customer. Every dev that didn't see the writing on the wall was dumber then a box of doorknobs. Just because Microsoft tells you to believe in Unicorns, doesn't make it a legitimate excuse for you to believe in Unicorns.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio16d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing16d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9216d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit16d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing16d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9216d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

Eonjay18d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn219d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers19d ago (Edited 19d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn218d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown19d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos19d ago (Edited 19d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay18d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay18d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac18d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger19d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300019d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde19d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood19d ago (Edited 19d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde18d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

Reaper22_18d ago

Why would they pull out? They have the momentum. Sony has been getting nothing but bad news lately.
