Phil Harrison: Single-player games are doomed

"Former Sony Computer Entertainment America front man and current Infogrames president Phil Harrison made the bold claim Wednesday that the games industry will soon move away from single-player titles, like Alone in the Dark, and into strictly multiplayer experiences."

turbogeekx6568d ago (Edited 6568d ago )

I never thought I'd say this about you Phil, but you're wrong.

theKiller6568d ago (Edited 6568d ago )

but the wrong part is some games and genres r not meant to be played with others, like JRPG's or action games!

but yes i see that all games that doesnt contains multiplayer sell less than whose who has, because it natural that when u finish the game u wanna still play something challenging and if it is a single player then the second time wont be challenging!

i can never expect playing FF with someone else unless it was FF11 style which sucked

but a co op in FF13 can be amazing if it was well executed!

Fruit Loops6568d ago

I think you should play SoTC :]

Panthers6568d ago

Did SoTC sell really well?

People dont seem to find it worth their money if a game is only Single Player and not 30+ hours, no matter how good it is.

People complained about Uncharted, which I still feel is the best PS3 game to come out.

chaosatom3336568d ago (Edited 6568d ago )

"I just don't think consumers want to be playing games that don't have some kind of network connectivity to them, or some kind of community embedded in them, or some kind of extension available through downloadable content."

This is what he said, nothing about FPS games. Stop making him as some kind of a bad man or something.

ALMOST everyone is making FPS games, maybe that's why they are doomed. IMO.

iamtehpwn6568d ago

The quality and length of Single player games have decreased significantly. Remember N64, PS1, and Ps2 games? They all were lengthy, great, experience. Due to next gen costing so much, it's harder to develop a longer game though, and still hold the quality.

Admiratio6568d ago

Although there are many people who will continue to play games with only multiplayer, there are many who will no longer play. I do enjoy a multiplayer experience from time to time, but I thrill on my single player games. As a future game developer myself, I will always be an outcast if the games industry goes all multiplayer. I will continue to support the single player experience, and I also have to say Phil this is a bad move.

Now with that being sad, I do hear a lot of people complain about no multiplayer in games. And the industry will, unfortunately, cater to the masses first. $$ before satisfaction I'm afraid.

thePatriot6568d ago

I dont want multiplayer in my final fantasy or metal gear (co op that is) to think that with every game I have to play with somebody? no.

Presentist6568d ago

Yeah, I hope Phil realizes that Atari is on Gamers s**t list, he talks crap about games or styles that we love and adds awful, useless design choices to games like Alone In The Dark that otherwise might have been great.

ATARI R.I.P.

coolfool6568d ago (Edited 6568d ago )

I think he would say that we don't have the vision or the perspective to see the games industry like he does.

But with that in mind, I think that he has missed something. I think the single player is more than just an aspect of a game. It provides a way for every gamer to have their own unique experience of a game. The game then becomes more personal.

It is these personal experiences that gamers will have the fondest memories of in years to come. FFVII being a prime example of that.

Presentist6568d ago

Coolfool - Everyone needs to give you bubbles. However, you need to realize that some of his decisions since moving to Atari are very, very stupid. For instance, his implementation of the "quick ending" in 'Alone in the Dark' which basically encourages gamers to rent as opposed to buying, or his bad mouthing of single player experiences...I mean Atari is already in trouble, does he really want to hurt their image further?

Iamthepwned- Bioshock, MGS4, Half Life 2, Call Of Duty 4, Mass Effect...just to name a few.

NO_PUDding6568d ago

Everythign has been said here.

Fruit Loops made the best point.

Single Player won't be amde redundant. I don't find multiplayer anywhere near as fun as single player. I need to ahve some goodness, some depth.

I do not want to be shooting, and egttign nowhere, so Phil, I wanted to go into more intellgent depths but you are wrong.

gaminoz6568d ago

Phil hasn't got a clue. Poor Atari.

Time_Is_On_My_Side6568d ago (Edited 6568d ago )

You can have that same experience online. I think Phil is talking about a connected community with every game. So it doesn't necessarily mean capture the flag in Final Fantasy XIII but having online communities connected to games. Like for example it would've been great to have online score boards with Time Crisis 4 or Devil May Cry 4.

So even though it's a single player game there is still some competitiveness to it. So think of it like having different reputations for each game. Kind of like achievements but it goes beyond a simple score and is more specific. So doesn't just track what I've done but how I've done it, kind of thing. An example could be like achieving 10 head shots and getting a grade on performance C-.

"Phil Harrison, who was dead on with his predictions that the DS and Wii were gimmicks doomed to quick deaths, has predicted an end to the single-player video game."

ha ha

Condoleezza Rice6568d ago

A fantastic Single Player experience won't be overlooked, and that's just the way it is.

Co-Op is increasing in popularity, but single-player games will still sell well without it.

Vojkan6568d ago

Yes i agree, i never really liked this baboon he seems so fake and cold, like robot.
anyway tell that to MGS4 Dr.Phil Crapson

Relcom6568d ago (Edited 6568d ago )

Almost all my favorite games Single player?

I love a good single player game

THE_JUDGE6568d ago

Single-player won't die for a long long time. I think that it will evolve to allow more players in the story via co-op. I won't ever stop playing single player games, I like story driven games. Period.

Silogon6568d ago

I don't even need online gaming really. I mean a few are good and take some of my time but nothing that a good single player experience wouldn't end and stop dead cold. Uncharted and Ratchet & clank are prime examples of how I don't need online in my games.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle24d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

And then MK1 killed it again.

PlayStation legend Shuhei Yoshida says Jim Ryan fired him because he didn't listen to him

Why did Sony push Shuhei Yoshida out of his role leading PlayStation's first-party games? He'd overseen some huge successes. Well, apparently, he didn't listen.

Yeah I can see that for sure. Shuhei Yoshida should have been in charge not Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga33d ago

It should be free highway for him now.. but Sony are too stupid to see this, especially that moron Hulst

S2Killinit32d ago (Edited 32d ago )

Wtf why all that anger. PlayStation is dominating on every level. Besides I think there is a little more to hiring a CEO than just who is available. Its not like its a athlete your team wants to buy.

neutralgamer199232d ago

S2Killinit

live service failures, chasing trends, closing studios. yes dominating

Cacabunga32d ago

Sony is Dominating because competition is not existing. Compared to previous gens this is the poorest in terms of software offerings.

Last gen we got Uncharted 4 Lost Legacy and TLOU2 from ND alone.

This is so far a remasters gen, with no competition to lift up the quality

1nsomniac32d ago (Edited 32d ago )

..."PlayStation is dominating on every level"....

...Really???

PlayStation are soon heading into a new generation in the not to distant future. They currently have the worst customer satisfaction they've ever sustained as a company. The company is heading for a huge crash while at the same time they'll need to be planning how they are going to try and win back that favour and the build up to their new releases.

Yes financially they're winning but they're going to have to ride out this complete public corporate disaster. No one has faith in the company or the product anymore. They've damaged their public image so much this generation. Greed can kill anyone.

medman32d ago

Hulst is a disaster......

He would've done the same thing and fire Jim Ryan and Shuhei would be the villain. Why?
Because Elite creates the narrative and distraction for gamers, users and citizens.

Outside_ofthe_Box33d ago

More confirmation that Jim Ryan is the culprit for what has happened to Sony. Hulst needs to go too. What sucks is that a lot of the good top heads at Sony are no longer there. I wish that guys that were forced out prematurely by Dumbo Jimbo like Shuhei and Layden came back.

robtion32d ago

Yep. Yoshida was responsible for bringing one of the best games of this generation to playstation (Stellar Blade). He is an actual gamer and is in touch with what gamers want (creative, fun games, not GaaS and agenda pushing). He also seems like a genuinely nice guy if you watch some interviews. Of course they got rid of him.

darthv7233d ago

Makes you wonder if MS even thought about hiring him after Phil and Sarah were leaving. He certainly couldn't make their situation any worse.

Agent7532d ago

Microflop. After Windows XP and Xbox 360, it all went floppy.

S2Killinit32d ago

Floppy 😆
No pun intended

badz14933d ago

Yoshida for President! Jim Ryan was and always be a hack! Sony should get Shu back

Lightning7733d ago

All the gamer/consumer lead heads are gone across PS and Xbox. shuhei gone phil's gone (questionable) but gone. The future of gaming is somewhat uncertain across the board.
