Things Gamers Hate: DLC

Joel Palermo writes: "No matter how many things there are to love about video games, there will always be certain traits that just plain piss us off as consumers or as fans of a certain franchise. In order to address those issues, I’ve decided to start a new series of articles that analyze some of the things we hate as gamers. Every few weeks, I’ll be taking a closer look at some of the less popular elements of video games and how they affect us as fans and as players. This week, I’ll be talking about DLC or downloadable content for those unfamiliar with the term."

DLC has made me spend less on a game, not more. And sometimes it's even kept me from buying the game completely.

Whenever a game has DLC announced, I choose to wait for a 'complete edition' and/or a price-drop instead.

mrkatarn4395d ago

I never thought about it that way. That's a smart approach to take though! Game of the year editions are awesome due to a lower price with more content, but it sucks to have to wait sometimes.

Having to wait does suck sometimes, but basically it just means you are 8-12 months behind on the newest games, yet you buy them at a fraction of the price and usually including the DLC. And sometimes the games have been on the PSN+ program, so that saves money as well.

Also, it means you can buy 2-3 times as many games for the price of 1 new game, so I've already built up quite a bit of a backlog.

If a developer wants to earn 50-60 bucks of me, no problem, but then I have to be sure I'll be getting the complete experience for that money. Watch_Dogs for example is a game I happily would have bought on day 1 for full price.... and then of course they announced the DLC-pass, which TBH was to be expected, cause it's Ubisoft, and now that just means I can wait a year orso. IF I'm still interested in the game by then.

In the mean time, I am still enjoying myself, playing through that huge backlog, so a few weeks ago I started with Splinter Cell Blacklist (bought the edition with the statue for 30 euro, new), and last week I started with Sonic & Sega Transformed (8-9 euro on PSN) and The Witcher 2 (5 euro on XBL sale), plus just bought a VITA which has a bunch of free games because of PSN+.

And I've still got tons more games ready and waiting to be played, most of which I bought for 5-20 euro a piece at most.

If you're a bit patient and smart, you can save A LOT of money while getting a whole lot more gaming for your buck.

I rarely by DLC, micro transaction or pay for season pass. I have to thoroughly enjoy a game or a game that i play regularly with friends and want to still be in that world months from initial purchase. something about the gaming industry which really worries me is a great idea comes on a way to help the gamer and the developer but some always find a way to exploit it

DLC
Remakes/ HD remakes/ Definitive edition

I used to think dlc was bad, but now with microtransactions shaping up to be the scurge of this generation, dlc doesn't look so bad anymore in comparison. Though as of late, dlc milking is at an all time high.

I like Dlc. Not every gamer hates it lol.

It can be good and it can be bad. It's all about making a good purchase.

When logic meets EA it generates anti-matter ..... so try not to apply it in any meaningful way. Entropy is what matters in there !!

cue the apologist saying that these are mostly just contractors hired for this specific project bla bla bla

The community warned them this would happen but nope they knew better they continued with the live service push the made the art style cartoonish and this is the result

isarai_lee86d ago

It's always so bizarre when studios announce something super early in development under the suggestion of forming the game to player feedback, and then they push against all feedback heading straight for the cliff while everyone is warning them along the way

US Lawmakers Urge Review Of EA Sale

The Congressional Labor Caucus sent a letter to the FTC warning the debt-financed, largely PIF-owned deal could be bad news for workers

lol ya think? they're sending all that work to the cheaper labor market as soon as possible. and FYI, that labor market has exploded in the last 5-10 years. They have enough people to replace every single job. But honestly, EA is over filled with useless upper management as it is. You could probably trim 25% of their staff with no real loss in production. They aren't gamers, they're business execs. Just look at how many AI related jobs they're already starting to post. Its also hilarious that PIF owns Battle field 6

Wait,

The same congress that attacked Lina Khan when she fought the Microsoft Activision purchase.
The same congress that allowed Disney to buy 90% of Fox
The same congress that allowed Liv Golf to buy the PGA
The same congress that sits back while Paramount tries a hostile takeover despite losing the bid for Warner Bros.

NOW, the suddenly cares about doing what's "right" for works? Yeah, right.

No. There were elections and some of the scum were replaced.

Different elections. Different scum. Same results.

i know its a long shot, but i hope this gets shot down.

EA now owned by The Saudis and Ubisoft to inevitably be owned by China. In hindsight, once EA and Ubisoft started having their financial woes, they should have pulled a Koei Tecmo/Bandai Namco by merging their operations into one.
