Can Video Game Reboots be Successful?

Reboots in the movie industry have always been considered the norm due to the age of the industry; however, reboots within the gaming industry have not really been considered normal until now. In 2013, there were several reboots of popular franchises including Tomb Raider and Devil May Cry.

In a time when games keep getting pushed back yes,if it was a year when lots of new games were released i'd say no they'd be far more unsuccessful,it's a new gen and people want new games that's not to say im totally against reboots there's some great title's that deserve it just not this soon.

The new Tomb Raider reboot says no. Casuals may still love it because they turned tomb raiding into shooting things for xp but the franchise itself is dead at the core.

I prefer it to the originals by far. But it's not really the same game

Depends on if the franchise was dead before the reboot Tomb Raider was dead but Devil May Cry was not dead and they rebooted anyway so I can see how those fans were mad if they rebooted MGS I would be pissed lol.

Short answer, yes.

I thought Tomb Raider was a good remake for the most part it has potential, to bad the had no meat on its bones and lacked depth like most AAA games these days. The storytelling and gameplay were like Uncharted and IMO that is fine for the most part. If you are going to be influenced by a game at least do it well, IO just think it needs more to set itself apart. Puzzles were lacking but I really enjoyed the new Lara and the island was gorgeous and I just wanted to keep exploring it. Hopefully they do not casualize it even more in the sequel or I will be disppointed

The original TB IMO has clunky mechanics now and I could never get any enjoyment out of them, so a reboot was not a bad idea. Games like DMC should have just been new IPs. Thief IMO warrants a reboot though I dont if it is good, the originals were only on PC and most people do not remember it or even heard of it (unless of course you been PC gaming for ages)

I don't agree with that. I WISH I could agree with that. But buying habits and customer opinions prove otherwise

We've seen developers in the AAA space try new things and ideas. More often than not, the customers aren't willing to give things a chance, or not enough people buy into the project for it to grow.

Creativity works better in the indie space because the budgets, pressures, and expectations aren't the same.

it's a nice idea and it worked during the PS2/PS3-era when AAA didn't cost hundreds of millions of dollars. smaller budgets and shorter development time left room for more creativity and more risk. a game didn't need to sell 4 million+ copies to break even. things are different now.

This is the guy who bragged about crunching his staff and having them work through the night. Crunch culture has lost more talent and done more damage to the industry than any other factor. Screw him.
