The Lost Guardian

Several years ago we, the gaming masses, were treated to a smidgen of The Last Guardian. However since then, news of this game has been naught but whispers on the wind. Is Sony treating the Last Guardian like Duke Nukem Forever?

Reading this 'article' made me really miss last guardian, which is strange because I've never played it, I think having played Ico and Shadow plus seeing the trailer and gameplay at some point made me feel like I knew this game. Such a shame but e3 is just around the corner and with so many next gen remastered ports I dare say its a possibility. I hope.

My theory is that since PSLS leaked the game before E3 2009, Sony was "forced" to announce it when it was nowhere near to be ready, and it also put pressure on the developers to finish the game, which caused technical difficulties, which in turned caused problems with Fumito Ueda ultimately deciding to leave Sony.

Then it was decided to be ported to the PS4 since the PS4 was still in concept stages, so the development stopped for a while until they could have some specs to work with. The game resumed development until 2010.

It is now ready to be renounced, but now it's up to Sony's higher ups and PR executive to decide exactly when it's going to be shown again.

That is my theory

GenericNameHere4399d ago

These conferences are planned months ahead... You think a leak a few weeks early is going to leave an impact and cause a change?

colonel1794399d ago

They are planned months ahead, but they sill decide what to show and not to show even days before the conference. Don't remember if it was GOW 1 or 2, they decided that they would show it only 2 days before E3 (it was in the bonus DVD) They couldn't get the game to work right.

There are so many things that depend on what is ready and what works, etc. So they definitely could have added the game.

Look, ANY self respecting gamer loves Team Ico's previous games....they are classics, on a level many games will never compete with... BUT, Sony has shut down & ruined some great studios that have rapid fired games out for PS1, PS2,PSP, PS3 & PSVita,....classics like Medevil, Wipeout on PS1, & Wipeout ON EVERY PS platform EXCEPT PS4.....Games like Primal, Ghosthunter, The Getaway, The Mark Of Kri, on PS2 from awesome development teams that Sony either completely screwed, or completely severed from there 1st party arsenal....... So, any PS1, PS2, PS3, Vita, PSP or all the above owners, KNOW what Sony & more importantly WE, as gamers, have lost....Add to the list of Sony abandoning developers, Lightbox Interactive that developed the awesome Warhawk & Starhawk (yes, I love Starhawk better than Warhawk, so i'm in a minority), but thats beside the point as both these games ever getting sequels, or successors, or ANYTHING on PS4 is a pipedream at best...Same goes with Twisted Metal, as even though I LOVED the PS3 version, best in the series, NOBODY bought it & it failed to capture gamers, thanks in huge part to Sony's pathetic (NON)marketing (NON)tactics with PS3. Insomniac ran from Sony after 3gens of console loyalty, as well as 2 handhelds...Yes, they still make PS3 & possibly PS4 games, but obviously they have the "B" grade team on Sony, while the gun "A" team has shacked up with MS...
What this WHOLE ramble basically cuts down to, is, HOW IN HELL are Team Ico still alive at Sony, when HUGE western developers have been being shut down by the boatload by Sony HQ...Developers like SSM lost half there staff, there whole 2nd team.....these are developers of GOW fame.... A game that unlike EVEYTHING Team Ico has done, sells awesome, & is a high quality game series to boot.

Now, I don't want Team Ico to go anywhere, BUT, I would have thought it was more financially viable to axe a studio that has failed to produce a single piece of gameplay video, let alone a game, since SOTC on PS2.. and truth be told, for me as a gamer, Zipper, London Studios, Cambridge Studios, SSM B Team, Lightbox Interactive, Team Soho, were far bigger assets to my gaming, than Team Ico...I just can't put them over so many talented developers, that constantly delivered great games...And one studio that delivered a massive Sony PS ICON type game called Wipeout....I mean, this game SOLD PS1's by the boatload, it is a classic series of the highest order...And Zipper....Well I don't have to tell my Socom &2 loving compadres what this game did for console online gaming on PS2....I mean, seriously, this game is still yet to be beat by ANY online console shooter....It was unbelievable how incredible that game was online (the single player sucked)....So, it truly is sad what Sony has sacrificed in the way of 1st party developers, & it's a mystery to me, how many bad decisions were made in regards to PS3 & it's games, marketing & such from some truly iconic, landmark, developers, while other developers like Team Ico, have been FLACID, & delivered jack sh1t, in near 10 years....and there games before that, were niche titles that failed to sell...Anyone else baffled by this?????

colonel1794399d ago

Don't be so pessimist! Studios close every day and its just business. There have been awesome games in the PS1 and PS2 era, but there were also a lot of games created during the PS3 generation. It's normal that some franchises survive and other don't.

I can guarantee that there were gamers feeling like you when the PS2 launched and there were so many franchises that didn't return, but there were so many other created.

The PS4 has been out for only 6 months! Wait until Sony announces the games that are coming for it, and I can guarantee that there are going to be a few that will become your favorite games.

Mexxan4399d ago

Totally. This should have been put to bed. Maybe a dedication to realise produce of home grown talent has meant Sony has lost some sort of objectivity.

All I know is intrigued and charmed, I am not.

SamPao4399d ago

I thought Team ICO are like 20 people. So thats way less risky than a 100people team

isthe4399d ago

I hope it actually comes out, I loved Ico and Shadow

MooseyXTC4399d ago

Sony already said news was coming soon, the influx of articles about it NOT being developed is aggravating to say the least.

Looks like PlayStation took a hit with Marathon and is now quietly adjusting prices worldwide to recover the losses

andy8529d ago

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Pergele29d ago

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla29d ago (Edited 29d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk28d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

Eonjay28d ago

If nothing else, we should be united against the real issue here. AI and unnecessary tariffs that are effecting all gamers.

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit28d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg28d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10128d ago (Edited 28d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14929d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.

CosmicTurtle42d ago

I think MS were and still are the richer company. They tried to acquire Sega back in the day (and considered doing so again more recently), they obviously bought exclusivity to Halo which was originally shown as a Mac title. I don’t think as a company MS can claim the moral high ground here. It’s a wilful lack of self awareness.

Of course Sony would try exactly the same if they had the resources, but when the PS2 dominated the industry was in a much healthier place with an abundance of great third parties.

This has been a depressing generation as far as first party decisions are concerned. The fact we are debating business plans rather than which game is better is a sad reflection of the state of things.

Darkseeker42d ago (Edited 42d ago )

There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.

S2Killinit42d ago

MS was definitely a bad influence on gaming.

raWfodog42d ago

I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.

I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.

Reaper22_42d ago (Edited 42d ago )

But first party studios aren't enough. They only make up a small portion of the industry. Without 3rd party there would be no industry for Microsoft or sony.Developing games take time and money and sometimes you gotta make moves to stay competitive.

raWfodog42d ago

Nah, I never said first-party was enough. I said it’s the ‘best way’ to drive gamers to your platform. 3rd-party is a free-for-all and there’s no guarantee that gamers will use your hardware to play the game. If you want to push your own software and/or hardware you need first-party, or at least exclusive deals with third-party studios.

SimpleDad42d ago

They Shure did a great job... 25 years later Xbox is dead.

Reaper22_42d ago

Then why be so emotional and continue to talk about it. Xbox will never die be ause it stays in so many people's head.

lodossrage42d ago

How can you even see him being "emotional" in that comment?

If anything, you're the emotional one, constantly trying to go at anyone that says anything against Microsoft. So when you call him emotional, it comes off as deflection

Elda42d ago

I own an XBSX & I can say it's becoming irrelevant out of the 3 current consoles.
