EU is second largest videogaming territory

According to research compiled by Nielsen Games, the European Union is the second-largest videogaming territory in the world.

Gaming generated EUR 7.3 billion (USD 11.4 billion) in the European Union during 2007, compared with EUR 7.4 billion (USD 11.5 billion) in Asia and EUR 6.9 billion (USD 10.7 billion) in the United States.

The average age of a gamer in the UK is 33 – the highest out of the territories surveyed - and 42 per cent of UK game players have children.

Across Europe, 81 per cent of parents say that they enjoy playing games with their children.

Of those polled, 72 per cent found gaming "a fun way to spend time" - compared to 68 per cent for television and cinema - and 57 per cent believe that gaming "stimulates the imagination" - compared to 48 per cent for movies and 35 per cent for television.

The research also revealed that 93 per cent of Europeans recognise the PEGI age rating labels.

"This research confirms what the industry has realised for a long time - gaming is now enjoyed by an incredibly diverse audience," said ELSPA managing director Michael Rawlinson.

"And the UK is a particularly mature market – we have the oldest, most passionate gamers across Europe.

"The fact that gamers are growing up and enjoying gaming with their children illustrates the enduring nature of the medium. It's fair to say that, compared to other forms of entertainment, games are doing well."

The research, entitled Videogamers in Europe – 2008, was compiled by Nielsen Games based upon surveys of 6000 active gamers, aged 16-49, across 15 countries: the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Benelux, Switzerland, Austria, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Czech Republic, Poland and Latvia.

This is good news for gaming, why'd you have to go and mention the USD?

JOLLY16486d ago

He also made it false. It isn't N. America, it is just USA. when you add the rest of N. America (Canada and Mexico) It is #1

Lyan6486d ago

He mentions that because the significance of exchange rates is something you have to consider in judging size. Their variables in measuring size is in monetary gains by region, which essentially only measures profit gained and not necessarily size of audience. If games were sold for an equal quantity in each region then monetary gains would be a decent gauge of relative size of a regions user base. This is not the case though.

Take MGS4 which you can find for £39.99, that is $79.12 with current conversion rates. In North America you can purchase the game for $59.99, that is about $20 difference per new game purchase by region. If all of the profit received was in this large of a difference then nearly 25% of the profit gained in the European regions can be attributed to conversion rates versus North American profits. Basically if you take conversion rates into account you have to consider only up to 75% of the profit gained if you are going to judge size of user base.

I'm not taking anything away from the article as it shows that the gaming industry is making a significant profit in this region. It also shows that the market is not composed of just children which is a common misperception of games. Basically means their will be an increased focus on producing games centered around profiting in the European region.

Sorry about the long response, seems to get away from me sometimes.

I have always said that there is just as much money in Euro sales as there is in US sales. It's surprising to see that there actually is more money.

JsonHenry6485d ago

I am surprised that they are not number 1, considering all the countries that make up the European Union.

PS3 is strongest in all the strong territories now. And it's still tieing and winning in the U.S. also ; P

v1c1ous6486d ago

cause...i got bad news for you :(

thePatriot6486d ago

and they still get a crappy gta4 version. and many games are released there months after japan or U S. maybe this will change it, this and simultaneous world wide release of mgs4. we can only hope

Maverick_6486d ago

I meant over the Xbox 360. Which is true.

Guwapo776486d ago

We all purposely leave out the Wii in comparison. The Wii is a video game console yes...but its in an entirely different league. It doesn't match up like it once did, like Super nintendo and Genesis. Wii has no competitors in features and pricing.

PS3 and Xbox 360 is where it matters for pushing the envelop of home console gaming. You may agree or disagree with me on this but I'm surely not the only one that thinks this way.

KeiZka6486d ago

Oh? I'd dare to say Wii has pushed home consoles in MORE than PS3 and X0 combined. How? By getting people (besides of the usual crowd) to play. Sure, there are many likeminded people here, that agree with you. But that is because this place is a place where the newcomers of gaming do not convene. They don't need to. They have no need to boast how much they like their system, or their dislike of a system.

Spin it away as much as you can, you are still purposefully neglecting Wii out of the equation. And as long as someone new to gaming gets rather a Wii than a PS3 or X0, it sure as hell is competition with the two other choices out there.

Guwapo776485d ago

@KeiZka

As you can tell from my pic I happen to own both systems (totally 11 systems) but IMHO I do not feel Wii is any competition to the PS3 or Xbox 360. Totally different audience like you said...those that have a Wii that are "real gamers" also own a 360 or a PS3. The only time "I" have seen a person that chose a Wii over the PS3 is because thats all they could afford at the time or the Wii was in short supply.

Greysturm6486d ago

But i am sure theyll spin it around somehow

JasonPC360PS3Wii6486d ago

And... why again would xbots need to spin this?

PSWe606486d ago (Edited 6486d ago )

ok, now it's unanimous,

X-Box 3rd60 will lose this console war.

The proof is right here. You PUTO Bots just lost your last foot hold in the U.S. to the Wii and Europe to the PS3

You know the world is f’d up when Michael Pachter has given up cheerleading Xbox.

dveio2h ago(Edited 1h ago)

Wouldn't it be the case of Pachter finally agreeing with parts of us rather than we agreeing with him?

I remember vividly that back in the day when GP was introduced and shaped further, many of us were saying that it's a great service on one hand. But were also already skeptical, too, as to how Microsoft would be able to keep the service running financially in the future.

Or/and how it would affect studios and game development in general.

As of March 2026, I think we have the answers some of us anticipated back then, when it was still Pachter who had forecasted «100 million subscribers».
