Make it a (Virtual) Reality: Star Wars

There’s one dream that everyone that plays videogames has had. It’s a fantasy that, no matter how far the industry has come in recent years, has never been realised to its full potential. We speak, of course, of the lightsaber. Since 1977 children and adults alike have lost hours daydreaming about what it would be like to wield the ultimate sci-fi weapon from the Star Wars franchise. The movie’s tightly-choreographed, lethal ballets of colourful sword battles seem destined to one day make the perfect transition into videogames. Many had hoped that the Nintendo Wii would finally allow us to become a real Jedi but both that Wii remote and the Xbox’s Kinect Motion Sensor have come up lacking in recent years.

I'd be happy with an updated X-Wing vs TIE Fighter for PCs and the new consoles. For maximum intensity, let XBL and PSN play together with one side as the empire and the other as rebels. They'd alternate or course. ; )

Haha! That would be amazing, but it'll never happen.

Yeah I know the cross play thing will never happen. I still want the game though. I kept hoping PS3/360 would get a game like that, so now I have to move my hope to PS4/XB1. I greatly prefer console gaming over PC, but those X-Wing and TIE Fighter games were awesome.

I've always wondered if there was some technical limitation on merging the XBL and PSN gameplay on select games, or if it's mostly just proprietary. The online playerbase would be astounding if you could tap into them all.

I remember reading at some point that Sony was ok with the idea but MS wasn't. Not sure if that's true.

I'd guess it would be a technical thing, but idk.

It would juts be a case of connecting ports on two networks. Not exactly a big deal - each would have to create a API that developers could put into their games to allow for data transfer across networks.

It would mean all existing games that want to use it would have to be patched, but the bigger issue is that both MS and Sony would consider it a discouragement from buying their console. If you can already play against your Xbox-owning mates on your PlayStation, why would you buy an Xbox?

Are a bunch of games, some of which are nearly 10 years old not one being from 2026. Barely one from 2025.

I do like the irony of the closing paragraph though, "Why VR Adventure Games are Thriving". Really buddy?

mooreneco2128d ago

That’s because it’s his favourite VR adventure games thus far, a great game always a great game regardless of age - Half life 2/ Ocarina of time - are old but still among the greatest games of all time. The irony of it is several are from last year, depending on platform, have you even played VR?
