1TB Blu-Ray Compatible Optical Disc Announced

An article on The Register tells the news of an announcement of a new 1TB optical drive and disc that will be backwardly compatible with Blu-ray discs. The technology, developed by Call/Recall in partnership with Nichia, uses a rhodamine-type dye in a 200+-layer recording medium that gives off light when excited by a laser beam, along with a single fluid-filled lens to read multiple layers by varying the amount of fluid to change the focal length. The technology is designed to work with Nichia's blue-violet laser diodes, which are already used in Blu-ray drives.

@WTF

How did i lose 1 bubble?

people can you please give me some bubbles

decapitator6557d ago

Is this why you reported the story as been posted already ? Still bitter I see.

Fishy Fingers6557d ago

Possibly, if you dont mind forking out another sack load of cash for a new format.

Personally, Id rather stick with the idea of backward compatibility, 1tb is more than enough for 99.999999% of applications.

LenHart6557d ago (Edited 6557d ago )

people please do give me some bubbles

sorry people i misunderstood the story

Fishy Fingers6557d ago (Edited 6557d ago )

If I was a HD-DVD fan why the hell would I want blu-ray to survive rather than buy another format?

Your an absolute idiot.

Yesterday I was called a PS3 fanboy, lol... you kids are all messed up. Honestly, no matter how bad the story/editing, I approve it just to p*** you off now.

LenHart6557d ago (Edited 6557d ago )

can you please give me some bubbles

well i didnt undestand the story

good news for Blu Ray indeed

Fishy Fingers6557d ago (Edited 6557d ago )

Are you really so slow?

I'm a huge BR fan, that is why I want this to work, that way in 2011 when people require more storage they will be able to use these discs in there old BR players. That way BR lasts much longer, make Sony more money if thats what your interested in.

Basically, it means the 3 BR players in my house will be as functional and up to date in 2011 as they are now.

Do you understand now????? tard....

EDIT: LOL nice edit, guess it stops you looking the complete clown you did a minute ago. (soz to everyone else now Ive taken up all this space for no reason o_O)

Max Power6557d ago

just took one away for that

IzKyD13316557d ago (Edited 6557d ago )

why are you so desperate for bubbles? and a word of advice, the more bubbles you ask for the less you will get

decapitator6555d ago

I like how people disagreed with me even though they had no idea what the guy I was replying to had said...pffft.

Good. BD just became almost future proof with this announcement.

Hydrolex6557d ago (Edited 6557d ago )

Wow MGS5 probably can use that.

they said 50GB is not enough so enjoy 1TB.

Rockstar can put the whole United States into the next GTA ahaha.

Tomdc6557d ago

tht tech will fail. By the time we are filling that kind of space we will be downloading everything... as soon as blu-ray is over then online downloads will be the next step I believe.

games4fun6557d ago

if they are compatible with blu-ray we can have 1tb games i never really use symbols for my posts i think they are juvinile but this call for one imo

^0^

drewdrakes6557d ago (Edited 6557d ago )

Well if you read correctly it says its compatible, not that current blu-ray players can read these discs. It takes a special lens that you can add and remove liquid to so that it can reflect the light of the 200+ layers. So i wouldnt hope for a 1TB disc for PS3 any time soon.

Amanosenpai6557d ago

Yea... I can see the future...

Interviewer: What do you think about working with a 1TB BD to deliver MGS5?

HKojima: It isnt ENOUGH...

Hydrolex6557d ago

After reading this, I feel

DVD9 is a joke
CD is is whiped out

BISHOP-BRASIL6557d ago

CDs will only be wiped out when a media come out and turns to be no more compatible with CDs... Really, why do you think we still use always the 12 and 8 cm (about 4~5" and 3~4") disks? So we can still compatible. There is a music market out there you know...

And after all there is nothing wrong about little space in the disk, it's just that some aplications needs more space than others, and we have to be prepared to deal with it, but CD, as DVD (DVD9 or simple) will still have their aplications, but not on the HD Movies, or, probably in the future, games.

Time_Is_On_My_Side6557d ago

Digital downloads won't take over this is more useful with video (including movies), video games (won't use the whole thing but will have no limitations), or anything people want to keep for memories like albums.

Having things on disc allows for more space on your hard drive and downloading 1080p content will take up more memory.

i said this a while back and a br fan said that i was lieing because i was a hd fan.the truth is that i like the br picture but like i said before ,when this new format comes out it will just about kill br before it even get started, hell ps3 fans are saying that ps3 games need more room,so if games need more room then br discs has now, then just think about a few years from now how it will be.

hell this might even be good news for microsoft,if microsoft could use the new format in the xbox and other ways then it will just split the use of formats in half, half will use br and the other half will use 1TB optical drive.then both console could both play br with out microsoft using the br drive.the only difference is that microsoft could use the 1tb disc and sonys want beable to play the 1tb disc on the br drive,so microsoft will beable to hold at least 3times more more information on their games then sony can on theirs.

i'm not saying it's going to happen but it would be a smart move for microsoft to make a deal so they can use the new drive.i know that some ps3 fans will say i'm stupid but everyuone need to stop being bias.i'm not saying that microsoft will use the new format, all i'm saying is that it will be a smart move for microsoft to do so then that way they could say that they could play br disc with out using sonys br drive and on top of that microsoft would be able to say not only can they play br disc but they could also play 1 tb disc and the br drive can't.

sloth4urluv6556d ago

Capacity is great, but people always seem to forget another crucial factor READ SPEED.

With a ps3 your limited to 9MB/s, at that rate it would take about 32 hours to read the disc. I think you can forget about using this for movies, and I see absolutely no point of this for games.

By the time games require more than blu ray capacity there will be a much better solution anyways.

DeadlyFire6556d ago (Edited 6556d ago )

This will likely be the next optical format for the PS4 and maybe other consoles & PC in 2010-2013 in at least one console. They will up the read speed up a bit for another console or something by the time this tech comes around.

Pornlord6556d ago

To say that downloads are going to take over for DVD, CD's, and BD you have to assume that everyone in the world has a computer, not just some, but over 95% IMO. It won't happen in our lifetime. It just won't. You don't have to be a tech head to operate a DVD player, but you do have to have a working knowledge to succefully download a movie, make sure you have the proper codec's required to play this movie, plus the proper programs to watch and choose between extra features, menu options, language settings, SRT files being in the same folder as the root program... Just because we understand how this works, doesn't mean that everyone does.

Scottama6556d ago

You're using the straw doll logical fallicy; you're assigning a false claim to something and then disproving THAT.

If YOU had read correctly, you would have seen that there was NO MENTION of PS3 using this technology!

mercyless96556d ago

its feels good to know that 1tb discs are a possibility but what on earth would you want to "squeeze" onto it?? maybe 100gb would do good for game developers but 1tb?? this calls in for diminshing marginal utility

yesah6556d ago (Edited 6556d ago )

that made absolutly no sence, so when there is a lot more space reuired downloading will take over?

how many years you gunna spend downloading that terabite then?

NO_PUDding6556d ago

Straw man fallacy? You been doing critical thinking courses?

Heh, good catch.

sloth4urluv6556d ago

wow, I guess using that logic the mp3 player buisness shouldnt be doing that well because you need a computer to get the songs on them...

I dont think you really get it, you wouldnt even need to have a computer. You think they wouldnt make a standalone player that you could buy that only requires an internet connection. turn it on and log into your account (say something similar to steam), scroll throuhg a list of your purchased movies and then stream it.

As soon internet speeds become faster thats what will happen.

Sony and blu-ray suck?

The "Blu-ray Disc Founder group" was started in May 2002 by nine leading electronic companies: Sony, Matsushita, Pioneer, Philips, Thomson, LG Electronics, Hitachi, Sharp, and Samsung. Spearheaded by Sony Corporation, on February 19th 2002 the companies announced[2] that they were the "Founders" of the Blu-ray Disc and later changed their name to the "Blu-ray Disc Association" on May 18, 2004 to allow more companies to join their development. Some examples of companies that signed in include Apple, TDK, Dell, Hewlett Packard, The Walt Disney Company, Warner Bros. and Universal Music Group. As of December 2007, there are more than 250 members and supporters of the Association.

And i suppose you think Microsoft can compete with all them?

Sony is ranked 8th on the worlds semiconductors list (richest companys in the world)

With an anual revenue of +88 BILLION.

Microsoft isnt even in the top 20 on the very same list.

...Haha!

wow, being proud of "owning" pp is like beating a retarded kid at Jeopardy. You guys are very easily entertained...

dcbronco6556d ago

@ThatCanadianguy420

Not sure what the list you're using is, but Microsoft is a far more valuable company than Sony. Microsoft is on pace to have a 24 billion dollar profit this year. Four times Sony's profit. Microsoft has over 20 billion dollars in the bank and no debt, Sony has a couple of billion on hand but also has 100's of millions in debt. Microsoft had over 40 billion on hand a couple of years ago until they decided to give it to shareholders.

SONY's total assets is worth around 100 Billion dollars (2007)

http://finance.yahoo.com/q/...

MS total assets is worth around 63 Billion dollars

http://finance.yahoo.com/q/...

MS has a BIGGER MARKET value but that means nothing since MARKET CAP is BASED on the COMMODITIES you produce in surrounding eg Nintendo is not even worth 10 B but has a market cap of 70Billion dollars

SONY has more assets than MS .

MS has produced and sold more products and earned more dollars than SONY. all of that money however ended up in the stomachs of high paid professsionals working at MS

MS has more liqefable assets . SONY has more future inverstments and long term assets . MS has almost no future investment. SONY's futureinvestement is worth more than MS total current assets

dcbronco6556d ago

@LenHart... What assets are you speaking of. They sold just about everything they owned to keep from going under from all the blu-Ray and PS3 loses. Fools like you are the ones who lost money in Bear and every other scam the stock market runs. Sony is struggling. They had to scrape together money to join Samsung in the new LCD fabrication plant, they sold off most of their buildings over the last two years when the PS3 and Blu-ray didn't sell. They sold stock in their financial operations, which means they have to share that money now. Obviously you didn't read the article about the 11 billion in debt they have compared to the 4 billion in on hand money. Maybe you're to stupid to realize that just because their TVs are selling better, they will never have a hold on that market like they used to. And more than anything maybe you haven't noticed that the world is becoming ever increasingly dependent on computers and the main player selling the software is Microsoft, and that doesn't look like it is going to change for a while. And maybe you also didn't notice that Microsoft just took over more than 30% of the market(a 30 billion dollar market) that had been Sony's bread and butter for the last few years. That is before they screwed it up with Blu-Ray and the PS3. Continue being a stupid fanboy, believe what you're told and continue to get fooled. Now go to your mommy and beg for bubbles.

It's cool tech... However there is always a flip side. I am guessing one disc will probably cost more then I make in a month... Still though eventually it will get cheaper. Good news for sure
