Bound by Flame Review | Gamecrastinate

Bound by Flame is a fantasy RPG developed by Spiders Studio which launched today, May 9th for PC, PS3, PS4, and Xbox 360. Published by Focus Home Interactive, Bound by Flame has been running a bit under the radar leading up to its release, though we didn't let that stop Gamecrastinate from giving the game a spin.

This game's reviews are all over the place. In my experience these kinds of games are a few patches away from being very good.

starchild4404d ago

I'm playing it on PC and I'm really enjoying it a lot.

The voice acting isn't the best, the lip syncing is below average, the animations aren't very good, the textures aren't that great and objects can be a little blocky, but the narrative is actually pretty interesting and the combat is challenging and rewarding in a way somewhat similar to the Dark Souls games. The lighting, shadows and effects also make up for the textures and geometry and result in a game that still looks quite impressive in many cases.

All in all it's a great game and it definitely has surprised me by flying under my radar and actually turning out to be a pretty good game.

sounds like my sort of game, l could give two shits about perfection, l know how hard it actually is to get rigs working and all that stuff is irrelevent to gameplay :D

just gotta wait 2 weeks before l can get this, just one thing, does the game remind you of dragons dogma or kingdoms of amalar?

MadLad4404d ago (Edited 4404d ago )

I'm having a blast with the game. Things got tied up and the review is going to be a few days late, but, considering the game holds up through, probably going to be giving it an 8. At least a 7.

CrashJones4404d ago

I was gonna wait on it, but I am happy I didn't.

The story is very interesting the further you get into it.
The dialogue can be really funny at times.
Graphically it is nice looking. It isn't "next-gen" by far(I'm playing on PS4), but it operates smoothly and is fun to play.

I can see how the scores will vary... especially if the "reviewer" only plays the first chapter. Outside of that the game shouldn't get any lower then a 5 and no higher then an 8 in my opinion. I can't rate it myself yet as I am near the end of chapter 2. As I said though, it's only getting better in my opinion.

If you like a game that plays well, has an interesting story, and looks good, not great... then check it out. Especially if you love RPG's.

Kevin VanOrd (GameSpot) screwed the pooch with his review 4/10, the reviews are definitely all over the place but I don't care, going to be picking this game up because it looks to be enjoyable.

candy_mafia4404d ago (Edited 4404d ago )

86/100 Seems overly generous....Infamous got less from certain sites.

I played this game for 30 mins last night, it's not that impressive. Given that there is a trickle of Gen 7 games at present, this game should do well commercially.

But that doesn't make it a good game IMO. I guess some folks will enjoy it though :)

morganfell4404d ago (Edited 4404d ago )

30 min. And therein lies the problem. It is not your fault as the game doesn't grab you in that first hour. I have been up all night playing this and am finally heading to the rack shortly.

The game seems a little lacking at first. Your choices in character advancement and crafting are not having a huge impact. Trust this and plenty of people said this on the site. Once you head back into the swamps for the second time, and you will know what I mean when you get there, it isn't that far into the game at all, combat starts to evolve to be this very tactical thinking person's dungeon crawler.

This video describes the game perfectly: https://www.youtube.com/wat...

candy_mafia4404d ago (Edited 4404d ago )

I kinda agree about not playing it long enough, but I'm one of those gamers that if a game doesn't grab me instantly, I get put off.

That's just me, but yeah it could get better the more you get into it. I just found the dialogue depressingly boring, the visuals are so, so and it feels extremely linear for the $60 price tag IMO, especially as it's released in the same month as Watchdogs ;/

I sincerely hope gamers enjoy it though. No game bashing here :)

Edit

@morganfell

I'm viewing the video right now! ..thanks :)

morganfell4404d ago (Edited 4404d ago )

Here is an example of the swamps. One of the guys I work with did this:

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

He said he didn't even edit it, just picked a section straight from his PS4 and dumped it right to youtube with no cuts.

Gamecrastinate4404d ago

The first 30 minutes of the game aren't the best, I wouldn't give it even an 80 for the first 30 minutes.
But I tried to look at the overall game.
Reviews scores are so subjective too, I tend score on the higher end anyway but an 86 to me might be a 50 to somebody else.

candy_mafia4404d ago

Thanks for your reply....

I watched 'morganfells' video link, and it did look better in that section of the game. I just find it strange that my own personal opinion as to whether 'I' like a game or not can yield disagree's.

I honestly don't mind disagree's...just find it strange that's all Lool.

thricetold4404d ago

No one disagreed with you because you said you didn't like it, your opinion means squat honestly, I'd say you got disagrees because you stated that 86/100 was overly generous after spending just 30mins with the game.

And you then mention infamous like its goty for everyone. Different strokes.

berndogskate4404d ago

Seen a vid of this, 2d grass in 2014 gtfo with this game, ive seen better indie games tbh, bargain bin for me

starchild4404d ago

What are you talking about? It has the same alpha-based grass that most games do. It is actually a pretty nice looking game overall.
