Should Destiny Have a Single Player Campaign?

OnlySP: Destiny is one of the most anticipated triple-A titles hitting shelves this year. It has a massive open world, gorgeous graphics, and is made by Bungie, the renowned developers of the Halo series. The thing is, Destiny does not have a single player campaign. While you can play it solo, you will always be connected to the other players in the world of Destiny. We at OnlySP have chosen to discuss whether or not Destiny should have a single player campaign, and we would like your input in the comments section below as well.

-Foxtrot4403d ago

Well with 500 million being spent on it, it would be nice to have one included.

Although they said you can play by yourself online...so that's good enough for me.

Wingsfan244403d ago

Yea, it's Bungie and Marty O'Donnel though haha. They make masterful campaigns together.

Shadonic4403d ago

I would definitely want an offline mode though.

-Foxtrot4403d ago

Yeah I don't know why you can't, it can't be that hard to do.

It's just incase you connection goes funny or if you want time to yourself.

rdgneoz34403d ago

MMOs don't really tend to have offline modes. As for easing players into the game, most MMOs have starting area quests / tutorials to get players familiar with the game. It's one of the reason they're making players spend a few hours in the game before they can play competitive mode (so you actually know how to play your class / the mechanics).

Shadonic4403d ago

@rdgneoz3

Yea i know, I'm familiar with MMO's, I'm talking about being able ot play without an internet connection if it ever comes to you not having access to it or a subscription (if you still need one for it )

UltraNova4403d ago (Edited 4403d ago )

Thats what I've been saying for a long time now. An effort like this, portrayed as a game changer of sorts not having SP feels like a cheat. Additionally, who can guarantee that 6 months in Actvision wont turn it into a subscription based game forcing all those players with max levels to sign up? I mean how else are they going to get billions (10year plan, Activision...)out of our pockets, with new level caps and weapon packs? If they eventually do this the game will be useless without SP, at least to guys like me where online multiplayer is usually a turn off.

Offline SP on that kind of budget is a must. And lets be honest here, its Bungie we are talking about, they do killer SP campaigns plus you get to know the frickin game before you start getting slaughtered online!

"they said you can play by yourself online...so that's good enough for me."

Exactly. Other games have allowed co-op through the same story that a solo player would see, but I don't remember that ever equating to the idea that they lacked a single player campaign.

"While you can play it solo, you will always be connected to the other players in the world of Destiny"

That seems like an obvious contradiction.

spicelicka4403d ago (Edited 4403d ago )

I think the author should've titled it "should destiny be playable offline". That's what it seems like he meant anyway. The game clearly has a campaign that can be played solo, but you have to be online to play it, which means you can't play single player offline.

Also the author assumes that due to the game being shareworld, co-op centric, it won't have a story mode like halo, which I don't think is the case. It's a unique game, shareworld but not an mmo, campaign focused but also co-op focused, rpg but not quite, open world but not exactly, and that's why i find it so interesting.

theDivision4403d ago

Agreed. The Division is doing something similar where you can do either which I think it a great way to go because those who love coop (like myself) get to experience the campaign that way, and those who prefer to go solo can still do that as well.

3-4-54403d ago

I agree. Also, with a single player campaign, you can always play that later on at some point even if the multiplayer community starts to fade.

medman4403d ago

Am I missing something? I thought Bungie had already confirmed one of the play modes is called patrol, where the single players can explore at their leisure choosing how much or how little to interact with others when advancing the story in game.

hankmoody4403d ago

I don't care either way. Besides, the game is meant to be continuously played for years.

S2Killinit4403d ago (Edited 4403d ago )

I love single player campaigns, but destiny's single/multiplayer hybrid does not bother me. In fact im happy for the new take on single player. Innovation is always a good thing in my opinion.

the1whoknocks904403d ago

I agree. I wish gta 5 did this to. It would've been awesome to play with friends on single player. Like hiring friends for heist and just playing as one of the three characters while friends control the others.

S2Killinit4403d ago

That would have been a nice touch indeed

tdogchristy904403d ago

A question I have is this. With all the talk of mmoish and 10 years will this be the only disk you'll need for 10 years like pc mmos or will we get a new release every three years like most console games?

He paid billions for Starfield. This should be the real story.

Microsoft bought all of Zenimax Media for 7 billion, while Sony paid 4 billion for Bungie. I think Microsoft got the better deal due to acquiring Fallout, ElderScrolls and Doom.

anast632d ago

This can't be true. They only bought Starfield...

@anast
Should've thought that one out buddy, lol.

So you're saying that Microsoft has missed out on so many huge gaming franchise in the last 25 years from GTA exclusivity to guitar hero and destiny it's just laughable they had so many misses

Reaper22_632d ago

Yea, but they're still 100 times more wealthy than Sony. I would say it worked out well.

Gamingsince1981632d ago

Xbox is dead all that money doesn't help.

Hypertension140632d ago

What has work out well? It sure as hell had nothing to do with Xbox.

andy85632d ago

That isn't because of Xbox though. This is a gaming page, not an I get supplemented by father Windows page

Bathyj632d ago

Microsoft's money has nothing to do with Xbox.
Xbox is a money pit to them they would love to ditch but are after some ROI first.

Let's face it, Xbox is like a red headed stepchild that steals from you to buy drugs.

Hofstaderman632d ago (Edited 632d ago )

MIicrosoft is NOT XBOX. The current situation illustrates this. And Microsoft wants its ROI.

@Bathyj and daddy Satya has just force admitted Phil to rehab.

gold_drake631d ago

you know why MS has so much money, and it aint cause of the gaming xbox branch.

so lets not kid ourselves.

PhillyDonJawn631d ago

Xbox was shown to be more profitable than ps

jznrpg631d ago

@PhillyDownJawn not more profitable. More revenue with ABK acquisition but them going multiplat shows they are not making much profit

ocelot07631d ago

That's great for Xbox gamers ain't it that Microsoft are more wealthy than Sony. Is that really a argument use are using now lol?

Imagine me in my job. Arguing with a fellow security guard at another company. Hahah well the company I work for is worth £800m the one you work for is only work £600m!

631d ago
Knightofelemia631d ago

Microsoft may have more money but Sony has the talented studios and the games to back up those studios.

Plus turning down Marvel too. Spiderman is only exclusive to Playstation because of that

Hedstrom631d ago

Best deal deal in gaming must be when Sony bought Insomniac for 229 million dollars. They made over 800 millions on Spiderman for the ps4 alone. Thats just crazy!

XBManiac631d ago

More in the 1.000 million now.

gold_drake631d ago

another Interview?

how is he the only one who loves the spotlight as much as he does lol

Futureshark631d ago

Let's not forget he also famously passed on Spider-man, Genshin Impact and GTA3.

However it's almost kind of cute how he can keep that sh1t-eating grin and say he's a 'no regrets' kind of guy, especially when you think how much just these 5 titles could have swung the world in Xbox's favour instead of Sonys.

How he's kept his job I don't know, he must sure be keeping Papa Nadella's shaft warm somehow.

"But, but Gamepass, he introduced that!!!"

Yes he did, and now look at Xbox, all it's exclusives are coming to Playstation now rendering the platform obsolete.

DarXyde631d ago

Honestly, with that kind of track record, you can't convince me Spencer hasn't eaten it from the back in the name of self preservation. Probably unwashed...and at least twice.

That aside, my interpretation of everything here is Xbox has been mismanaged a bit too much and Nadella came down from his throne. The way it is now, I don't believe for a minute the multiplatform move was Spencer's idea. I don't even think the acquisitions was Spencer's work. At this point, I reckon he's got as much power in his role as Hunter Biden at a Ukrainian energy company.

DivineHand125631d ago

You can never tell how things will turn out if he had said yes to those games. Xbox already has access to some great IPs, however, they hardly do anything with them or fail to deliver. It's also possible their presentation wasn't good at the time, and they made sure the next presentation was better.

I believe that part of being successful is releasing things in the right place at the right time.

Many major corporations have a story similar to passing on successful business ideas. Let us look at Sony Pictures for example. Back when Marvel went bankrupt, they had the opportunity to buy the entire Marvel for only $25 Million but turned them down. An unnamed big shot at Sony reportedly claimed that “nobody gives a shit about any of the other Marvel characters,”. They ended up taking Spiderman for $10 Million instead.

https://www.avclub.com/sony...

Fast forward to today, we can see what the Marvel brand has done for Disney. Is it possible the same success would have been possible had Sony acquired those IPs. We can't say that for sure and it is possible most of those IPs that are successful today may not have been used.
