I've said that unless the Playstation appeals to people beyond just gaming, this fast start will not keep up.

Yea playstation is a niche product thats what playstation gamers have been bragging about saying sony made the console thats a mainly gaming machine compared to microsoft who is dabbing there beaks into other entertainment such as tv, casual gaming, nfl etc. What changed? Why all the commotion now? Niche means a very specific demographic of consumers. IT IS a niche product compared to xbox but that doesn't automatically mean it's going to sell less or more it means just means Sony is more worried about a certain demographic.

The only thing that's going to stop the PS4 is sony's dire financial situation.

This week I dropped $1000 on a brand new Sony TV. My friends and family were begging me not to do it. Even my mom. Their reason? Fears that buying a product from a dying company was a risky investment.

So I bought it at Best Buy and also purchased the 5 year replacement plan. Best gaming TV I have ever owned.

But the attitudes of my family and friends are sobering. If more people start to feel this way it could spell big trouble for Sony.

Sony are indeed at a disadvantage here due to OS design for entertainment (Oneguide, Snap, Kinect), tight multi-platform integration of services however they are going to have a entertainment play with PS4 also which is not included in this article.

One Sony have their IPTV service coming soon which could be big.

Two Sony also have original programming for PS4 which is being developed by their entertainment division.

So while they will lose the app game and services, in terms of entertainment they won't be far off.

Ultimately those things wouldn't matter for a while to the majority of people because both consoles have a large cost attached to them which stops a large amount of casuals adopting either platform has their media hub as mentioned in the article. As we will have to see just how much MS invests here because I don't see people buying an Xbox just for a few exclusive programs because the majority have there content will probably be accessed from the TV/Cable/Internet.

The points about MS's eco system and Sony's finances are both fair and interesting, though, but there is one HUGE issue with this text, and that is lack of referencing. Very typical on game sites to not use quotations of any kind, but still absolutely unacceptable for a text like this.

Playstation as a brand is longer than Xbox. 20 years of experience with 400 million+ units sold and amazing library will not turn as a niche product by a product who can't even sell outside of US/UK and have a couple of good franchise.

The problem with this assumption, is that there are so many set-top boxes vying to be entertainment hubs. No doubt some will copy any unique features the xbox has.

The other problem with this assumption is, as the article points out, this we mean the Xbox will be bought by many of the more 'casual' gamers, just as the original Wii was. That didn't work out so well for the Wii! The Wii was always criticized because it was short on 'great' titles, and it had a completely different character of games. If the Xbox is suddenly bought en-masse by people for the entertainment features then the game library will start to change to reflect this.

Don't know what this guy is smoking but I buy a gaming console primarily for gaming. Key word "gaming". The logic is right but highly misplaced you see if people want an entertainment device they buy one, these are called pcs and tablets. Which is why pcs and tablets sell more in one quarter then consoles sell in years. People buy gaming consoles for gaming because that's what they're supposed to be for. Not to mention that all these entertainment features he's going on about are behind a pay wall with live when they are free to use on every other device including the ps4. The only thing behind the plus paywall is multiplayer. I still can't fathom how people justify paying again to use services they already pay for, that should be illegal. If I'm already paying $8 a month for netflix and another $40 a month for internet theres no way I'm going to pay a company another $5 a month just to use it on their device when I have half a dozen other devices that will let me for free, that's just an exercise in stupidity. The only way these paywalls are justified is for gaming and that's it so to say all the other features of the x1 makes it better is purely stupid. Want the best entertainment deal for $500? Then buy a ps4 and a cheap tablet, problem solved.

That's not happening now, and i don't know if this will change in the future.

I'm finding the recent types of these articles to be low-profile damage control. Why all the speculation as to how Sony is going to go out of business? Why the speculating about Xbox making Playstation niche? It seems many people aren't too pleased with the sales performance of the XONE compared to the PS4.
I suggest getting used to it. If PS4 can perform like this sales wise with a moderate drought of AAA games, the difference is only going to get more apparent with time.

This article seems to place an inordinate amount of importance on the cable box integration, which is becoming increasingly outdated with people cutting cables. Aside from cable and Fantasy Football (lol), the X1 and PS4 have the same media capabilities as far as I can tell (Netflix, Amazon Prime, HBO Go coming to PS4, etc.)

This is where the real issue comes up, for all the hope this writer places on casual media consumers driving sales this gen, what's to make these non-gamers go for the system with the paywall? If they have it explained that a PS4 can use the media apps with only a base system purchase, but X1 requires that, plus an additional $50 or so for XBL if they bother to look for a sale, why would they choose the One?

Chromecast, Roku, and apple TV will get the non gamers well before they pony up for a xone. Most them cost less than 50. Why ever buy a game machine for multimedia if youre not primarily concerned with games.

This is a weak premise because how many units does a console need to sell before it is no longer niche? PS2 numbers? More?

The core concept behind the Xbox One is decent, but it simply did not push the enhancement of entertainment far enough. Let's be honest, right now it's not much more than an interface that allows notifications from one application to appear while another is open. It's cool and convenient, but it isn't a feature that sells the console. The Xbox One does not fundamentally do much else that a PS4 doesn't, or couldn't do, besides the TV interfacing. So the entertainment aspect is weakened.

For instance, the Xbox One is creating its own television/movie content. The Halo series is supposedly going to also air on Showtime, and it's unclear how much of the Xbox One's original programming is going to be exclusive to the platform, if at all. Plus, I believe Sony is already planning similar things (and if not, it easily has the capability to do so). Thus, I don't see how this element really adds to the mainstream appeal of the console versus the PS4.

Honestly, there are two main design philosophies to chose from when creating a console. Game/performance first (PS4) or multimedia (Xbox One). The former obviously appeals to the intended audience, while the latter needs to try to attract non-gamers as well. The Xbox One, even if it were much cheaper, does not have fundamental features that attracts the non-gamer. However, I wouldn't say that Microsoft was foolish in their attempt, just that they were too timid in their execution.

They should have tried to create features we didn't know we needed like when DVR was first introduced and now has become a common desire; they should have designed the Xbox One to function as a cable box so it could not be an all-in-one device but also the cost could be subsidized; they should have made the Xbox One the best entertainment center around that had the horsepower to still play games.

But in reality, they made a game console focused on entertainment that doesn't actually offer much that the PS4 doesn't/can't do, made it more expensive and made it less powerful. I don't see what the Xbox One could ever do to be a more mainstream product than the PS4 other than dumping tons of dollars into advertising to the American audience, buying exclusives, and selling the console for huge losses just to increase the install base. But, at the end of the day, is the Xbox One ever going to be more than a niche product?

By the way, last Saturday I was trying to use the HDMI in for my cable TV to watch a soccer match, I just found that the screen was laggy, as the input signal was 50Hz while Xbox 1 was suppose to be at 60Hz. Multimedia center, hah?

Titanfall is a very enjoyable game and I hope Halo 5 is to but I have had 5 games for my PS4 and only 1 for my xbox one.

Microsoft with the Xbox 360 was the power player in the market a few years back I don't care what anyone says.
Bigger choice of games at better prices yes you had to pay for Xbox live but the system layout was so user friendly.

The PS Store had to many stupid things on it and the layout was awful.

The PS4 is a way better machine graphics are so much better on the PS4 the controller is awesome the layout of the user interface is great to.

If your wondering why I got an xbone after saying all this well I traded in my PS3 at Game stop on a special deal with 2 games and 5 dvd box sets I got X bone for free.

I think the article makes some fair points, but... I think both companies had/have the same goal: Mainstream. They just took totally separate routes to do so.

Sony: Starting off as a niche, targeting the hardcore who will buy/adopt early hoping the they will spread the word and slowly introduce more media options: Playstation Now & and their own Playstation TV/program ala carte streaming. Start by targeting a small group and slowly expanding to a larger group.

MS: Starting off Mainstream! TV, TV, Sports, NFL, TV! Target the mainstream first, the games will come. For MS, gamers are not a big enough market. Their main target was, from the start, not the gamer but the gamers relatives!

If Microsoft wants to turn the xbox one into a set-top-box that plays games they are more than welcome to do so. I'm absolutely certain that Sony won't mind being known as a gaming console "IN THE VIDEO GAMES INDUSTRY." What a silly article.

large bulk of xboxs(and sonys/must include japan though) sales come from those 13 countries,theres a reason ms is taking its sweet time in those other countries that arent that popular with gaming,its because they're not as important,these yet to be released in countries make up percentage points of percentage points in sales.again why do you think ms isnt there yet in these countries?

Silly article. While the points made are legitimate in some cases, the author is ignoring Sony's foot in entertainment. Not only does Sony have services available (and soon to be available) that rival that of Microsoft's, but they also own a massive slice of the movie/music business. They could easily bring exclusive content (and are working on it now) to the PS4.

I really don't see the problem with this article. At this moment gamers are the ones buying these consoles. But if they were $99 or $199 (subsidized or just 3-4 years down the road when the price is lower) and if X1 by that time becomes an established brand with lots of great non entertainment content isn't it plausible that the regular everyday normal consumer would pick it up over the ps4? Its not such a stretch. Remember that at those price points your attracting a different kind of audience. The family or the who would like to have their kids say goodnight to the grandparents over Skype. Or someone automatically backing up photos from their phone to OneDrive and showing to the family their photos sitting in the living room. Some if these people like to have a box that actually is a balance of great gaming, a big Xbox live community and something to be entertained with apps and tv content. The broader audience looks for these kinds of things believe it or not. And if I had to take a guess, this is what Microsoft wants to do with the Xbox
