Bugs can affect any game, even Gears.

Look at the problems the 360 is having loading some textures in Gears.

There are times in the game where it can take 15 – 30 seconds for textures to appear in various parts of the game. It only happens when a level is first loading but it is pretty annoying and looks awful. We are fairly certain this is not an isolated incident because the problem popped up on all three consoles we played on.

If that doesn't stop Gears from being a game of the year, I think we can overlook some minor release-game bugs.

Yes this is correct. I have experienced this while playing GOW.

Although in my experiences, it has only happened to me when I enter a multiplayer game as a spectator (waiting to play). I have yet to have the rendering issue while actually playing.

And it doesn't take 15 - 30 seconds either.

But anyway, this sort of thing happens to games.

We really don't know how bad or frequent it actually happens during the gaming process on Ridge Racer.

These texture loading "problems" rarely occur, and when they do it normally takes 2-3 seconds (one time it took about 7 seconds though, that was the first time). It only happens when you die and your checkpoint is reloaded. I've played through the game and died... a lot, and seen them maybe 3 times.

Wow the graphics on ridge racer 7 on the playstation 3 really are better than ridge racer 6 on the 360, just look at the detail. you get to race half a car or bits of a car. you could not do that in ridge racer 6 on the 360, dam i guess I got the wrong machine. (lol)

You know that this is quality control issue as with all the other games, such as GRAW, GOW, Halo2. They don't have enough time to test the games before release.

You of all people should know this. It has nothing to do with the hardware.

I have played GRAW and had worse crap happen then this that didn't go away. So should I say the 360 is crap? No, the programing is the problem.

We've seen the comparing from RR7 on PS3 and RR6 on 360. There we see the difference from 1080p and 720p. Less details, less rich, less colourfull.

In one word:

DULL

This is what happens you develop video games period. Next gen, current gen, last gen, first-ever gen...virtually all video games have glitches. PS3 is just getting more heat for it b/c it's in the spotlight now. A launch title with a glitch? Is that unexpected? It's a nature of the business, not console specific.

My Launch unit works flawlessly. Gears of War also, I've not had any issues with it and I just finished the single player mission., Live has also been great so far.

I haven't had any of these problems and I own 20 games for the Xbox360. I will say Saints Row had glitches online. GOW had a few loading issues but overall it plays nice and is one of the best games I've played. So this shouldn't be turned into a rag on Xbox 360. If you're not happy with a 360 go get a Wii PS2 or PS3. Honestly I’m happy with the games I have, and the games that are coming out for 07. www.tothegame.com

I didn't realize they copy and pasted so many textures in Gears. For a while I thought nothing was repeated, but I guess not. Guess that's how they fit everything onto the disc.
It's a really neat trick where you use the same lo-res underlying texture pattern (first pic) and then simply overlay differing layers that have elements such as cracks/rust/etc. Saves space and looks just as good since most of the detail comes off the normal map.

I guess some of the people here have forgotten the screwups and failures that resulted from 360's "proven technology". Hell, IGN doesn't have a single working 360 launch unit (and they had like 18). This is the first error screen I've seen for a PS3 game, and no big news of system failures or blinking lights of death have come out of a Japan. We'll see what happens with the American launch. Oh yeah, what I have heard is that the 40-player matches in Resistance are running smooth and that the people who bought it are having a blast.

Didn't even break 8gb even with the multiplayer maps etc...Looks better than Resistance, since you are trying to criticize the best looking game of the year. They do it the right way, since the 360 doesn't have a gig of ram.

I'd rather they layer the textures etc.. instead of having blurry textures up close like in resistance fall of man. The textures in that game look good far off, but as soon as you get close it looks like an early ps2 texture.

Normal mapping is very popular and the Unreal Engine 3 uses it extensively. Explanation: Normal mapping's increasing popularity amongst video-game designers is due to its combination of excellent graphical quality and decreased processing requirements versus other methods of producing similar effects. This decreased processing requirement translates into better performance and is made possible by distance-indexed detail scaling, a technique which decreases the detail of the normal map of a given texture (cf. mipmapping). Basically, this means that more distant surfaces require less complex lighting simulation. This in turn cuts the processing burden, while maintaining virtually the same level of detail as close-up textures.

Currently, normal mapping has been utilized successfully and extensively on both the PC and gaming consoles. Initially, Microsoft's Xbox was the only home game console to fully support this effect, whereas other consoles use a software-only implementation as they don't support it directly on hardware. Developers on next generation consoles such as the Xbox360 rely heavily on normal mapping, and are beginning to implement parallax mapping. Normal mapping is a good thing, DJ tries to make it sound bad, if RFOM would have use it on their textures the game would look twice as good.

Probably won't get one until Feb or March. That's when Motorstorm comes out anyway so i'll be fine.

Oh yeah, Gearhead. The data limit for Xbox 360 DVDs is 7.9GB, so the fact that Gears uses 7.8GB is quite notable. The rest of the 8.5 GB is restricted due to security purposes.

As for normal mapping, I was simply pointing out a technique that game developers and CG artists use. Most people don't notice so it's a quick way to save time, space, and money. If you look at the environment texture in the first Gears picture Enforcer posted, you can tell that there was no reason to put more detail. Normal mapping adds all that detail for them. Resistance didn't use normal mapping as extensively as Gears (probably due to time restraints), but the textural quality is at roughly an equal level for both titles if you compare gameplay screenshots. As far as I can tell, both teams did a kickass job in terms of game art.

And the 360 been out over a year so there will be more problems which could have been fixed like this can be with a patch. So wait a year and see if the ps3 is the same if not thats good.
I havent had any them problems yet with my 360 but the games have couple of glitches like the ps3 will.
Maybe the developer was lazy or found it to hard to developer for like some of the 360 games which were rushed.

Also i havent seen something this bad in a while i wonder if it still can play it like that lol looks like sh1t

there was this one part in GOW where i was looking at my the APC vehicle. it's total lack of textures almost made me think that it was a completely different vehicle; it took roughly 8 seconds for the textures to finally pop-in before i realized that it was the actual APC i was supposed to drive. there was also an instance of clipping, where i was in the building look for the Alpha-team, and i was able to walk THROUGH a clumping of boulders and rubble, to a blank white screen where the game hadn't even loaded yet. point being, if such glitches can mar a graphical masterpiece like GOW that spent years in the making, then surely they can mar a racer that was probably rushed to meet launch deadlines.

Exactly. And the occasional superficial bugs certainly don't alter the fact that GOW is the first near-perfect, oustanding Game-Of-The-Generation.

If only some people would focus on what really matters to them rather than shyte-disturb at every opportunity. The lack of perspective and objectivity here among posters is saddening.

Anyway, it's unfortunate that the bugs in RR7 are such an interference to gameplay. Hopefully a patch will take care of it, but regardless I suspect this thing will outsell most games in Japan thanks to the series adherents.

I might rent it, but for the forseeable future I'll be playing Resistance and a couple downloads from the Network. It's a shame that there's not much else to choose from in the coming weeks, but patience will pay off. Until then I'm going to be busy with my shiny new toy.

Lol these pictures are funny I haven't seen that kind of thing in a LONG time lol...I used to hate when that crap happened...but im sure people would rather have a minor glitch in a game than an overheated console so oh well...and wow I honestly haven't noticed anything wrong with GOW, that's odd but I think maybe people are trying to keep playing while it's loading which is probably why this happens...I dunna but the loading is very rare and happens for like 2-3 seconds so I'm surprised this is even noticed...

they made it so you could play all of the games on 1 system or play cross platform amongst 360/ps3/wii, people would still find something to argue about. by the way, my dad can STILL beat up your dad with 1 hand behind his back, in 1080p, without having to change discs, while browsing the internet, with 512mb of memory, with no lag or glitches, all the while playing pitfall on an atari 2600.

developers do. let me give the analogy again. if you go to see a movie at the theatre and it sucks, it doesn't suck because of the theatre, it sucks because of the director. how long has the ps3 been out? it's not going to have perfect games now, and it won't have perfect games in 5 years. man made. man made means defects, glitches, problems. that's how it works. and yes, gears could be done on the ps3 just the same as mgs4 could be done on the 360. just different paths to the same goal. the actual hardware as far as games go isn't much different between the 2. you take a cab, i ride the bus, but we still both end up at burger king. just different techniques.

I agree with power of Green II, the bugs I've seen playing GOW, do suck because they are bugs. However they don't affect game play in the since it makes you want to put down the game and never play it again. Notice the game still got high ratings even though it has a few bugs. The errors in GOW seem to come from the DVD drive read access not being quick enough.

As for RR7, you can’t say you wouldn’t be pissed if you were running your fastest time ever or getting first on a difficult track and your car just completely vanished you wouldn’t be pissed. I know I would, and if you wouldn’t be well you have some serious patients. That type of bug QA beta testers should have caught but with the devkits coming late, they may have not had a chance to correct it with actual system play. I’m guessing the game went forward based off the devs system. I’m not going to say the PS3 sucks but the type of error, where the screen does that I’ve only experienced when a graphic card is going bad or just can’t handle the textures being thrown at it.

First, I have a launch 360 and haven't had any troubles with it (knock on wood). However, I know there were many people who did have problems.

Further, you can be sure the same kinds of problems with exist with the PS3 and there will be alot of launch returns/repairs.

However, the problem above is more related to the fact that Ridge Racer 7 was likely rushed to be released and not tested properly. It will be fixed with a patch. Does it suck? Sure.... but more and more game companies are releasing unfinished/buggy games because they know they can just patch it.

As long as consumers keep buying, nothing will change with that. Don't turn this into a fanboy war. The situation sucks, but it is not unique to Sony.

This article is about Riiiggge Raaaaccerrrr! and has nothing to do with the 360 so stop trying to change the subject and just face the fact that the PS3 is total junk. Besides all its other problems now it has become clear that it cant even run 1 of the 13 launch titles correctly.
This is not just a tiny glitch that can be over looked. Its impossible to even continue playing the game like that. It looks like that shared 256Mb of memory just don't cut it in the real world..
To clear up a the few UNTRUE bashs regarding GOW. I beat GOW in Casual and hardcore, play online and I am playing it on insane now, I have not seen 1 glitch or display issue at all. Infact I have not seen anything as bad as your PS3 riiidge raaacer in my life, which includes PC games as well. Its a fact that the PS3 is becoming the biggest flop since beta max (at least beta max played its movies ..lol )
All you sony fanboys can put your head between your legs and walk away , the facts are the facts take your $700 paper weight and cry in the corner.

First, this article has to do with graphic glitches in software. The 360 was mentioned as a correlation between problems at launch. It has everything to do with it.

You are right, it is not a tiny glitch. However, it is correctible, and it isn't known whether this has occurred on many copies of the game/system or if it is an isolated incident.

As for Gears of War, the texture loading problems do exist. Just because you haven't experienced them, doesn't mean they aren't there, perhaps you are noticing them. Perhaps you are running on a 20" SD-TV and can't see it.

All games have their problems. Some bigger than others. The 360 had its share of problems on launch, as will the PS3. It sucks, but its a fact of life. Patches will come.

Don't be such a fan boy that you make such outlandish comments that are clearly inaccurate.

Duckman has made it clear that he has no understanding of the gaming industry whatsoever and is a fanboy.

Whether you like the system or not, whether you like the game or not, anyone posting needs to set aside their biases and attempt to post an accurate analysis of the article.

In my case, I have a 360, I will not be buying a PS3 (until it drops to the $200-$300 price range, if ever). I hate what Sony has done with the PS3 and I think it was a bad move on their part.

However, the PS3 is a powerful system and there are reasons it is better, reasons it is worse and reasons to purchase it.

The glitch sucks, but it's not a Sony/PS3 specific problem. It's a universal problem in the gaming industry that has been going on for quite a while and is unlikely to change.

Alymon, just so you know im useing a Sony HD Monitor running in 1080I. Dont get me wrong I love and prefer Sony TVs/Monitors however There Game systems have really gone down the drain since PS1. I say PS1 because to many promises were made prelaunch regarding the PS2 like the Online network card that only came out years later when the XBox 1 was released and other great features/promises that never came about also the fact the PS2 drives were cheap and had to be replaced often. other then that the PS2 was a decent system.
Again sony makes a great TV but there really failing when it comes to gaming systems.

Oh I agree. Sony used to be synonomous with quality and they've begun to falter in that aspect.

I used to be a fan of Sony, and I at one time owned a ps2, traded it in, and then bought another one later on again. Originally I was going to get a PS3, but I was convinced otherwise by friends.

While I think the PS3 is going to be a failure (in comparison to the PS2). I think Sony has lost alot of its support.

But judging from the pictures, I expect this to be no different than the problems the 360 had with some games and with the systems themselves on launch.

This on all fronts (so far) looks to be a dev issue and not a "Sony" issue. Anytime I see glitches in a game I (as should everyone) suspect its a coding bug, etc.

Now that said...this is a pretty big bug...and it was found relatively quickly which means at least in my eyes it was kind of a glaring one. I mean the PS3 just launched a few days ago and this bug is already out and public....and to be fair...I don't recall hearing about this kind of glitch before in any of the previews of RR7.

So this tells me one of three things. First, it is in all likely hood the devs issue and a patch will hopefully fix. 2nd (this ties to one and is pretty likely) Sony really pushed hard for this title to be a launch title for Japan and so quality testing was not as thorough as it should have been. 3rd, it could (and I STRESS "could") be a hardware issue which would be just short of a dissaster for Sony.

kept talking about how the 360 has such buggy games, therefore its crap. Now that the PS3 has one, they're saying that a game with bugs is ok and its not the hardware that makes the game, its the developers. Why the double standard? I've never seen any indication of bugs in videos of 360 games either. That's because there is always at least one unforseen bug because, well, humans make the games. The PS3 is gonna have a lot of buggy games. Deal with it! 360 fans had and have to, you have to as well!!

And Halo does the same thing when a match starts online. As far as bugs and glitches go this is'nt a Bug or a glitch so don't get it twisted. Now cars warping all over the dame place is a different story. As far a the Clipping i never seen that when rescueing the Alpha Squad one sole survivor Cole or walking through walls, I must walk this path again cause i Walk all over the building looking for Dog Tags in ever corner and never experience this. Also in Campaign Mode Dom or any of the other character don't open any doors Marcus does so i never experience this.
Oh yeah I thought this up while that i need to mention.

and technically Gears of War had way to much credit considering that people like in IGN would keep pressing the "best game" button in the voting booth while in reality the game is all graphics and hype but to some of you its just what you expected the game to be fun and promising but you can't despite the fact that this game shouldn't even' gotten 9.6 so in reality Gears of War got cheated by being the best game of the year

Horse Piss, I will agree that I don’t think the problem has anything to do with the Cell processor. I think it has more to do with the video card, or memory with the system or on the video card.

GOW, have you ever stopped to think that maybe it is a really good game? Honestly with all it’s glitches it has a killer replay value. It’s as addicting to play single player and I can see hours and hours being sucked away playing multiplayer. The game really is fun and exciting. Let’s not for get ROF got good reviews also, the reason it didn’t make higher marks then what it got was because they didn’t reinvent anything they just took what worked from the best and improved on it a bit. As for graphics they are great but didn’t compare to GOW.

I would like to know what game you feel should have made game of the year? Till GOW of war I haven’t seen one and I think many people will agree with me on that.

I totally agree! Love flight games and racing games, whenever I bought a new PlayStation a Ridge Racer was always that I got with it, was kinda bummed there was (and still is) none for the PS4

4 was the first one I played and it was really good. But I like 5 the best. Being able to control your comrades was great and the story was just slightly better. Though no one is more legendary than Mobius 1.

AC4 was my first experience not only of the series, but also my first PS2 game. Remember hammering it for hours at Xmas when I got it.

Ever play Gungriffon Blaze? II rather liked that game. But yes games of those type kind of tapered off.. I miss Armored Core during the Agetec days.. Mech Assault is gone.. no Chromehounds...Steel Battalion got washed out with what ever you want to call that last one.. Front Mission died.. I'm sad.

There needs to be a return to arcade-ish type games. Can still have titles striving for ultra realism and two hour cutscenes, but AAA productions where you can just sit down and *play* need to come back.

Ya I now what you mean... not sure what it is but some of the Indy games don't feel as complete in that regard. I feel like myself and many others look back on the PS2 Era (FYI not counting Xbox out or anything) and I felt I had more fun then, then well today.. I mean Armored Core Silent Line had this thing you could Train an AI AC and then fight it in the arena and use it on missions and such.. so many cool game mechanics I don't see anymore.. I kind of feel the 3D art of games and this push for fidelity has kind of hurt stuff... No one is going to make a Front Mission, or a Ring of Red game anymore. Or a game like PTO4 which is a fav of mine... and stuff like Warship Gunner.

No big name publisher is going to put the money needed into a new Mech Assault, much less add funds to an indie clone to polish it up. Just port it to whatever platform as cheaply as required bugs and all.

Been waiting forever for the Assault Suit Leynos on PS4, and that may as well still be on the Saturn.

I wouldnt mind all the Ace Combat games from PS2 era. The original PlayStation Air/Ace Combat games are too dated imo, but if they were to be fully remade then I'm all for it. My favorites are Ace Combat Zero and definitely Ace Combat5: The Unsung War, such an epic game.

Thanks for your contribution. If the general conscensus is that BC is not a feature that people are interested in, why talk about remaking a game in the first place? If you enjoyed it before you should be able to enjoy it again when you feel like it because you already own it. We live in a world of throwaway technology though, and it's rather sad. I own every system and game I have ever purchased, and I play them from time to time for the nostalgia. The old games are amazing, and should stay old to remind us where we've come from.

Its unfair because they already have a new game coming with the latest technology, and this is a discussion of what can they do in addition to that. So they have not "run out of ideas", if anything they have come up with new ideas.

I just find it strange that after how many iterations and progressions of both series they would want to remake Ace Combat or Ridge Racer. It's almost like EA asking fans which Madden should they remake.

Most of what Hollywood remade was because of the casting and the story.. AC isn't really focused on those things.. so that's a bad example imo.

Most of what Hollywood remakes is because of them running out of ideas of their own. They apply a well known established franchise (Ghostbusters) and then remake it knowing it will sell on the name alone.

So it can in a sense be applied to AC if Namco has run out of ideas for the game and are now thinking of remaking a past game instead of a brand new one.

In my opinion, I think they should remake Ace Combat 3 and 4 due to the US versions having missing content that were only playable in Japan. More Ride Racers would be great because it has been a long time since I have played a great arcade racer on consoles but what I really want is a brand new Splatterhouse!!!!

Ridge Racer Type 4. Best RR ever made. From opening to the end of unlocking the final cars this game is a blast. If you didn't play it I envy you cause you have the chance to play it for the first time. Gladly play a "remade in graphics and sound only" RR type 4.
