Will Survival Horror Die in 2014?

XBA: Before the end of the year, survival horror threatens to return to the mainstream in a big way, with two huge console releases; Alien: Isolation and The Evil Within. If these two games succeed, we may see a revival of the once great genre. If they fail, it could ensure that triple-A survival horror is forced back into the shadows.

well we have indie survival horror but id like some AAA survival horror to go with it!

TomShoe4422d ago

The genre might be suffering from the "The Last of Us Effect," in which one offering is so good, it just kind of ruins everything else for someone.

I believe both games will sell well though.

Is it really just one? I heard a number of decent horror games were out there this past year or two.

Indie horror is doing pretty well, in my opinion. It's the AAA franchises that are in trouble. Since AAA franchises aren't the entirety of the survival horror genre, I'd say no, it won't die.

MadLad4422d ago (Edited 4422d ago )

I say the indie scene is hit or miss. There's a lot more Overcasts and Daylights than there are an Amnesia or Outlast.
That said, just got done trying the demo for Among the Sleep and left very, very impressed.

You're right though. AAA dropped the ball in a major way.

SpiralTear4422d ago

Among the Sleep is definitely one to look out for. Looks really neat.

I think the real Survival Horror game died with RE4. I've yet to play a game that scares me or has my palms sweating the way RE did pre 4.

thorstein4422d ago

For me it was the original Silent Hill. Was amazing, had it when it launched so it was quite stunning, as were the RE games.

Crazay4422d ago

I agree SH was a WICKED series at first but then it got pretty bad like RE

Nocando4422d ago

The soundtrack for Silent Hill is one of the most memorable, used to listen to it in my car.

I'm actually not a big fan of what is most prevalent in "horror" games: the pop-up scare. It's such a lame, cheap scare. I DO love, however, the truly frightening stuff. The kind of stuff that will get in your head and make you genuinely scared of it. Not enough of that in my opinion.

Seriously, watch a movie or game that has a lot of those lame scares and when you know it will happen, it just looks silly when you see through it.

Bring back the dogs at the front door or through the windows, miss survival horror.

The Best Alien Games (To Play After Watching Alien: Earth)

An opinion piece on the best Alien games. From arcade Alien vs Predator action to a terrifying Xenomorph stalker, these are the best Alien video games starring Ridley Scott’s chestbursting, acid-blooded nightmare.

FTLmaster298d ago

Got a soft spot for AvP (2010) but solid list nonetheless.

Abnor_Mal297d ago

My favorite Aliens game also, having the three campaigns to play was great. Scaling walls as an alien waiting to ambush anyone that came too close.

Only played a little of the horde mode but was still fun.

Nittdarko297d ago

Aliens Fireteam Elite was my GotY in 2021, single player was kinda bad but playing that game 3 player with friends was so good and really challenging on higher difficulties

Massive shout out to Aliens Vs predator 2 (2001), a dialup lag filled fun mess in multiplayer and 3 great campaigns

The Evil Within Deserved More: A Great Horror Series Left Behind

The Outerhaven writes: While I hold Bethesda's The Evil Within series as some of the best Survival Horror games available, it's clear that Bethesda has no intention of revisiting the series. While Capcom is still working on its Resident Evil series, I look back at the now-dead survival horror series from Bethesda, wondering why the series was left wide open, and yet still not revisited.

An OK horror series left behind. It had some great ideas, but it never knew how to play to its strengths. Instead, it came out like just another RE4 clone.

I would love for a third entry to come out, but it needs to learn to lean in on the psychological aspect and move away from the generic "pew pew" ideology at the center of the gameplay loop. It doesn't need to abandon it; it just needs to put it into better context, is all.

Also, try a first-person perspective instead. Too many 3rd-person games with nothing to offer but an avatar taking precious screen space. At least make it an actual option and not that janky-ass mess the second game pretended to have.

Love both games, hope that we will get third game

I played through most of the PS4 version of the game but stopped because another game came out. I bought it last year for PC with the intention of using the VR mod but haven't gotten around to setting it up. I am glad I waited.

Neonridr375d ago

Great game, even better in VR. A little drawn out by the end, but I hope we see CA do something a little different with the sequel.

OtterX374d ago (Edited 374d ago )

Sweet. I also rebought this game on Steam for the purpose of VR. I'll have to give it another shot w full immersive controls. I had only tried it out briefly before.

It's funny this was never officially released at retail as a VR game, bc it feels so perfect for it!
