Is DRM good for games?

Today on Friends List, Features Editor Russ Pitts and Reporter Dave Tach ask: Is DRM good for games?

Kingthrash3604415d ago

good for digital...yes
good for physical...no
i agree that 1 buy = 1 buy..
digital drm stops 1 buy= 2-5 buys... with out loaning.
ps3 has this with 2...lowerd from 5...ps4 took it away altogether.
as far as pc goes the piracy in pc games are out of control so i can kind of understand the physical drm...but on consoles no. only 1 person can play the game at a time so to put a drm on it is just too controlling.

The only drm I like is steam and that's because it enhances the experience. That said, I think most people who pirate, usually we're never going to purchase the item in question.

You can still share a game between 2 consoles on PS4. There are, however, draw backs, your main console will become your secondary console so you will be unable to play your games offline, play remotely from vita or set things to download from your phone while you're away. Depending on how you game these things may or may not matter.

As for DRM, I've never been a fan, even on PC, there are tonnes of better ways to deal with this situation and countless studies have shown Piracy has in fact increased sales of movies and games and spread word of mouth of TV shows. The people pirating are people who would never have been able to afford the product in the first place (as MEsoJD pointed out) because they barely make enough to get by as is, but in turn they're working as free advertisements for such things when they're friends are over or they're discussing them "at the watercooler".

DRM has never worked, hackers always find a way, the one thing that has worked so far is having major components of a game requiring you to log in to the games servers, Sim City 5 was a testament to that I believe, unfortuntaly the game was pretty crappy (IMO) and in the end it was eventually hacked with an offline mode enabled. But it did leave people who pirated the game without a major feature of the game. There are other games like this but that was the first one that came to mind. Unfortunately it makes games like this a disaster for payign customers when servers drop or their ISP acts up. So there needs to be a better solution found, or none at all, publishers are trying too hard to tell gamers how, where and when they should play their games, and its only causing big problems for the consumer.

Games like Spore, without even really trying, are not nearly as good as they should be for pirateers (can that be a word? Like a Pirate-Pioneer?) because a major aspect of that game was the community created content, if you pirated the game you'd have to spend a few hours building up your creature database or just be happy with the ones that come with the game. I think thats a win-win situation for authentic owners and pirates. I know 3-4 people back in the day who were unsure if their PC/netbooks/laptops could run it but were a fan of Maxis games, so they pirated it, and after playing it for a week or so they ended up buying it so they could experience it as it was meant to be with tonnes of user created content.

My stance on DRM in video games may come from how I was raised on games. Back in the cartridge era, and as a young child with no means of income of our own, console and game swapping was a very common thing, there was very little arguing over who had the better games or consoles, the arguing was more "When are you gonna let me have that game?!" and "Why haven't you given me back my sega yet?! I've played yr SNES to DEATH! I WANT TO PLAY MY COPY OF Mortal Kombat 2 AGAIN! *hissy fit*" at which point the boys mother would kindly ask me to leave for "squabbling" :) Ah, deities, Bless the Irish Mothers.

I mean NO. . .but ok.

Digital: Typically only affects people legally purchasing the game. Hackers get to cracking this immediately and it's gets torented regardless.

Physical: An even bigger NO. One of the main reasons I buy as many games as possible physical is the ability to play the game on multiple machines. There is every advantage to buying physical over digital at this point. Even download speeds can't really keep up with how fast it is to simply purchase a disk.

I guess the whole second hand market is something you have no interest in. Why should the video games industry be immune to such thing, when almost every other industry, including other forms of media like movies and music not be?

Screw the kid who been living in the hood his whole life has no father and is simply trying to escape from reality for a few minuets with a Ratchet and Clank game he picked up at his local good will for 5 bucks. Sorry, DRM here, that will be $60 to reactivate this copy of the game.

You talk about PC Piracry,

Fun Fact go look up GOG.com or Good Old Games and see how successful they have been then tell me a business model where your not screwing the consumer out of their rights cannot work.

christian hour4413d ago

I love GOG :D Still play Evil Genius every week :)

No, absolutely not for physical games. For digital only service like Steam, not bad at all.

Mankey4414d ago

Take a look at GoG.com and tell me a non DRM service where your not screwing over the customer can't work.

randomass1714414d ago

Having that option is really great IMO. But Steam is the most painless form of DRM I've ever used. I like keeping all of my games centralized and it helps prevent piracy. I haven't yet tried GoG.com so I can't give you a real opinion on that one, but Steam is definitely not a bad service and it has yet to treat me like crap as a customer.

urwifeminder4414d ago

I own a vast array of drm titles on pc I never plan on selling them have all the codes its just not an issue for me.

DigitalRaptor4414d ago

So do I, but digital is digital. The clue is in the acronym.

If anyone ever tried to apply DRM to disc-based games... oh wait, they did.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio19d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing19d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9219d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit19d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing19d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9219d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
