Grand Theft Annulment

Brad Gallaway reports:

''So I went out and got a copy of GTA 4;the game everybody's playing and the thing that's racked up some of the highest-scored reviews of all time. The games media across tha intarwebs have been falling all over themselves to pile shimmering, golden scores on top of it, delivering the kind of unparalleled fellatio that's usually reserved for the kind of sweaty teen dreams that only hormones can bring on.

As I write this, it's currently got a 98/100 at MetaCritic after 66 reviews, the first 41 or so being perfect 100s-seriously, that's insane success. Rockstar must be thrilled, since any publisher out there would sell their firstborn for numbers like that.

So, after two days of playing, what's my take on it?

I'm not at all impressed.''

true gamer anyways. Go play Mario Kart Wii

NO_PUDding6573d ago

I wasn't impressed either, he speaks the truth in some parts.

I don't agree about the clunkiness of vehicles, that's a learning curve, and he obviously can't drive. I actually love the driving, but it felt good to be great and find it easy in the previous games.

Becuase it shouldn't be a simulation, unless it's itended that way.

The missions are nowhere near as imaginative as previous iterations, including GTA3, which had way less options.

The phone is gimmicky and annoying. It's also a cheap excuse for a menu.

The story is convoluted, disconnected and lacks the flow the previous games did.

Basically for me this game is a massive tech demo, which you can mess around in. Euphoria is it's only saving grace.

Skaterboy Tell Em6573d ago

I completely agree, this game isn't all its cracked up to be. I still play GTA SA to this day and it is still more fun than gta4 is now to me.This game mine as well be called Hitman, you do the same missions over and over again- go here kill this guy thats being protected by 50 guys then loose the cops (and im not even gonna get into how annoying the cops are in this game),go here chase this guy in a car and his driving skills are perfect.San Andreas offered way more variety in missions and gameplay, but i know i will get a bunch of disagrees from Rockstars blind following of fanboys because i think gta4 is boring.

Presentist6573d ago

Yeah Relcom, because anyone who doesn't buy into over-hyped games right away isn't a "true gamer".

So very, very stupid.

badz1496573d ago (Edited 6573d ago )

that's one stupid post from Relcom! not a true gamer just because he just got his copy of GTAIV instead of getting it day one? I just don't even want to elaborate more on that! it's plain DUMB!!

back to the topic, I was also hyped about GTAIV and preordered mine a week before its release! however due to stock, I got my copy quite late but that was ok for me anyway because I still got to play the game. by that mean time, I've dug almost anything I found like news, reviews and screenshots regarding the game and despite of the perfect 10's raining all over the net, I somehow kept my expectations low because from what I've seen, this is by far a 10 game!

I got the game and it's true! I kinda not impressed at all of the game and eventhough I laughed at the jokes, I also laughed at the graphics and physics of the game which was supposed to be touted as "top notch"! they messed up a lot on physics which make everything including niko and all the characters, the furnitures, building glass, fighting, vehicle handlings and collisions feels odd! - so much for a perfect 10 for graphics and gameplay department!

I played all the previous GTA because I think they were fun but despite having all overhauled, R* has made GTAIV too complicated and more than often annoying! - at least for me and I know I'm not alone on this. It's allowed to have glitches, repeatetive missions, annoying, shoddy gameplay and still got 10's because it's GTA! I'll enjoy the game some more until I have something else to play like maybe MGS4? who knows, but I have zero intention to finish it already.

Delive6573d ago (Edited 6573d ago )

You mentioned ai having perfect driving skills in a chase. I had a mission where I got to the point at full speed and was able to ram the ai car dead in the side, thinking I would avoid the chase all together. He was turning right, I hit him at the perfect angle, doing well over 60mph. The results? My car flipped from the impact and his car never left the ground. I turned the camera and he was driving like he never got hit.

I'm am trying to finish the game, but I played a Packie mission (Bank heist) for over 2 hours because it takes so long and I usually failed it after being in it for 20 minutes. Then between each mission, I'm asked to shoot pool, get drunk, go look at some great American Tata's or pick up a date I just dated 2 days ago. It becomes tedious.

THe writer seems to be a bit overcritical. It's not worthy of all the 10 scores it got (IMO), but not as bad as he's making it out to be.

NO_PUDding6572d ago

It's not worthy of anythign above 9.5, 9.5 would be VERY generous.

And I was tryign to follow the guy on the motway on the last mission, and it was awful elastic competition, i got to equal speed with him, and he suddenly sped away in fast motion.

And bear in mind, I ahve an OCD with thigns in games being played cinematically, so I don't allow clipping, and a never skipped a cutscene even if I had to watch it 5 or 6 times, I would go out in the kitchen, and not watch it, but it had to play out.

And this has been one of the msot difficult games to keep realistic and glitch free. Clipping, unrealistic fallign or catapulting of Niko, bad collision detection, all made me restart a mission.

And I didn't use the replay mission text, i loaded!

As much as i agree with him...this guy is an idiot.

"I can't say that it's a good game since I only put in about 45 minutes with it"

lol. Im gonna go watch 10 minutes of the Godfather now...ill tell you if i like it or not...oh...and ill have a full opinion.

JoelR6573d ago (Edited 6573d ago )

Uh breakfast... he was referring to Saints Row when he said he only played 45 mins... and that those 45 mins impressed on him that it and GTA IV are very similar but one has less hype.

Breakfast6573d ago (Edited 6573d ago )

I give up.

I had a funny reply Crimson...but since im just as dumb as the writer...you'll never get to read it.

Im basing my dumbness on these last 15 minutes...by the way.

just because it was over hyped and didn't blow your mind doesnt take away from it being a GOOD game it's not on mgs's stats as a story or halo's status in multiplayer but it's still a GOOD game ive played it since day one and havent been let down yet

OldGamer6573d ago

If you haven't played the "Three Leaf Clover" mission yet, you're in for a hell of a ride!

crimsonfox6573d ago

one of the coolest missions in the game

Bloodwar6573d ago

It is a really good game. Almost a great game. I like it. Don't play it as often as I would like, but that should change now that I got my big screen TV the other day. =)

Looking Back At 2008, An Unbelievably Incredible Year Of Video Game Releases

Huzaifa from eXputer: "2008 was home to the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Dead Space, GTA 4, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, and many other hits, which is outright remarkable."

ChasterMies759d ago

Some of these low paid video game “news” writers weren’t born before 2007.

just_looken759d ago

Here here

Those that were around before 2000's i am sure are like me that think we entered a world of non readers or those that follow without question.

I can not wait to see fallout 3 a goty game even though it was about water with non content until you add the dlc/updates then you got the performance/crashing

CrimsonWing69760d ago

I don’t think anything can compare to 2023

lucasnooker760d ago

1998 - the best year in gaming! Metal gear solid, crash bandicoot 3, medievil, half life, ocarina of time, thief, tenchu, resident evil 2, Spyro, tomb raider 3, oddworld abes exodus, banjo kazooie.

It was a different breed of a gaming era. You’ll never understand what it was like back then. The aura of gaming, it was different!

KyRo760d ago (Edited 760d ago )

I second this. Gaming was a lot more varied and fun than it is today. I'm 35 so getting on compared to some here but I got to see all the changes from NES up to now but I've never felt so disappointed in any generation than I have this current gen. I was expecting more from this generation rather than prettier versions of games that came before it. Game mechanics have become so refined that alot of games feel the same and has done for a while now.

Maybe it's time to have a break for a while. I love gaming but I don't feel I get much fun in the traditional sense out of it anymore.

CrimsonWing69760d ago (Edited 760d ago )

Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Abe’s Exodus, and Ocarina of Time are the only things from that list that I liked.

Here’s the 2023 game releases that I personally liked… and big releases that I didn’t care for:

- Dead Space Remake
- Wo Long Dynatsy
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- Diablo 4
- Fire Emblem Engage
- Hogwarts Legcay
- Street Fighter 6
- Hi-Fi Rush
- Like a Dragon: Ishin
- Octopath Traveler 2
- Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters
- Final Fanatsy XVI (actually ended up not liking this, but it was still a big deal release)
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
- Lies of P
- Mortal Kombat 1
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- Starfield (Ended up hating this one, but big release)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (I’m an old-school Zelda fan, but didn’t really enjoy this game)
- Alan Wake 2

I mean, honestly I’ve never seen a year of major IP releases like that, ever.

Profchaos759d ago (Edited 759d ago )

Isn't it just a generational thing realistically.

I've been gaming since way back and I some of my favourite games go as far back as the late 80s for me each generation has a year or two of game changing releases one after another before an inevitable dry spell.

I kind of agree gaming had a different feel games hit different because we didn't have the internet nothing got spoiled and you really had to put in the effort to beat a puzzle which could set entire groups of people looking for a solution. But most importantly games were experimental and not as cookie cutter as today even basics like controls were not universal today r2 is shoot l2 is ads garunteed you can't deviate from that in a shooter back then it could of been square, R1 or R1 and circle nothing was standard.

But as time moves on a new generation picks up their controller they are going to be interested in different things that PS1 demo disc with the t Rex blew our primitive 16 bit brains back on launch but to kids today it's laughable.
The new gen of kids coming into to hobby seem to value different things to us there seems to be a huge focus on online play, streamers, gaming personalities, and social experiences, convience of digital downloads. To me I value none of that but that's ok like my parents not liking the band's I would listen to its just the natural cycle.

Gameseeker_Frampt759d ago

Just about every year in the 7th generation was great and something we most likely won't experience again.

2009 for example had Assassin's Creed 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Dragon Age: Origins, Uncharted 2, Halo 3: ODST, Killzone 2, Borderlands, Bayonetta, and Demon's Souls to name a few.

just_looken759d ago

It still amazes me we got over 7 rockstar games ps2/ps3 but 3 for the ps3/ps4/ps5

Dragon age 1-3 and mass effect 1-3 in 7ish years what a generation.
