Marty O'Donnell Fired from Bungie?

A simple and sad tweet was given by Halo composer Marty O'Donnell, saying that he was terminated "without cause" by Bungie's board of directors. Marty was most well known for composing the music for the Halo series and its iconic theme, and was working on music for the upcoming Destiny.

Kingthrash3604421d ago

man...people leaving and getting fired everywhere in the industry...wtf, i hope he finds work soon. is the industry suffering more than we think?

Godmars2904421d ago

Its called the money riding the talent. Either there was some honest fault on his part that he's not talking about, the execs thought he wasn't working out, or someone figure they could cut a corner and save money by hiring someone who's cheaper now that he's done most of the composing.

UnwanteDreamz4421d ago

I really hope it's all just companies trimming fat. After years of growth and prosperity I think it helps. With this guys talent and experience finding work should be easy enough. These days the average ammount of time a person spends at one company is 3 years. Good luck with your future endeavors

morganfell4421d ago (Edited 4421d ago )

There was a legitimate reason... or there better have been one. Otherwise Bungie is opening themselves up to a lawsuit.

Usually in situations such as these, the Board consults with legal before taking action. As Godmars290 indicated, it may have been a fault on O'Donnell's part in which case we wouldn't hear it from him.

@The_Infected below. Without cause is also a legal term. Not only does it mean an individual feels action was taken with no just reason but it also can infer that the person in question was fired without being provided a reason.

Those two definitions may seem similar but actually they are quite different.

CoLD FiRE4421d ago

@morganfell
As far as I know, in Washington state (where Bungie is based) that doesn't apply. You agree to "termination at will" so your employer could still fire you without any repercussions.

Gazondaily4421d ago

BadgerDeluxe has posted an update from Bungie below.

Wtf is going on??

Thantalas4421d ago

This is all very sad and unexplained for the man is question, he is surprised at this turn of events so I wonder why the directors would choose to remove him? Martin O'Donnell is a phenomenal composer of truly epic soundtracks that would not be be out of place in a big budget hollywood movie. The original Halo soundtrack is so beautiful and deep with meaning it elevated the games into something even greater. Maybe Phil Spencer will want him for Black Tusk, if not I have no doubt that another studio will be eager to offer him a new home.

buttclown4421d ago

I honestly can't think of what it would be like now playing a Bungie game without hearing his music. We may never get an explanation but would like to know why it happened.

alexkoepp4421d ago

It was apparent bungie was going downhill after putting out Reach... (really? an invincibility perk?) I'm not sure why everyone is so excited about Destiny...

Really a shame, this guy is a phenomenal composer, hopefully they pick him up over at 343i

morganfell4421d ago (Edited 4421d ago )

@alex,

Bungie hasn't been going downhill since Reach. Quite the opposite. For the first time in a long time they are truly breaking new ground, not only for themselves but for the industry. That is hardly "going down hill".

Some of these comments concerning Bungie sound more like bitter Xbox supporters rather than observations of objective analysis. How many games has Bungie released since Reach? Yet your assumption, with zero proof to support youir case, is they are going downhill.

Remember how everyone, everywhere complained about Activision recycling Call of Duty assets such as animations and models? WTH do you think O'Donnell has been doing wqith his music?

Here is just one of several examples: "In Amber Clad is a variation on Under Cover of Night, Unyielding plays off Rock Anthem For Saving The World, and High Charity ends with a retool of the Leela theme from Marathon."

We have no idea why O'Donnell was fired. You can bet a multimillion dollar company such as Bungie did not commit to this action lightly or without due diligence knowing full well such a direction might have to stand up to a legal challenge. For all we know O'Donnell was in full violation of his contract and was warned 10 times to cease and desist. We just do not have the facts at this juncture and assuming that Bungie is the evil culprit is hasty and incorrect at this point.

I take this tack as everyone seems to assume Marty O'Donnell is about to be given a Sainthood and that just may not be the case.

EDIT:

@CoLDFiRE,

You make a good point as it is true Washington is what is known as an "At Will" State but we do not know if that is necessarily the administering authority for contracts at Bungie, nor do we know the terms of O'Donnell's contract or his possible stake in the company.

marlinfan104421d ago (Edited 4421d ago )

@king

oh wow, a company with hundreds of employees fired someone? shocking..

its part of life. peoplee get fired, it doesn't mean the gaming industries going under.

SoulSercher6204421d ago

@alexkoepp

Going downhill? That's a joke right? You say that as if they released more games after Reach when clearly they haven't. You saying they're going downhill sounds like bitterness due to the fact they're not exclusive to your console anymore. Destiny WILL be much better than Halo 4 or any other Halo after that.

-Foxtrot4421d ago (Edited 4421d ago )

I really hope Microsoft gets him for Halo 5

Sorry but the music in Halo 4 wasn't as good as past Halo games, it didn't have that spark like Halo 1-3

Come on Microsoft get Marty back for Halo 5.

Pogmathoin4421d ago

Soulsercher, where did you play Destiny? Give us a link please....

darthv724421d ago

i think 343 has an opening for a composer.

thereapersson4421d ago

@alextroll

Your comments reek of butthurt over the PS4 being lead platform for Destiny and the fact that Bungie is giving PS4 owners beta access first, as well as exclusive content. Even with this unfortunate news, Destiny is still shaping up to be one of the greatest games we will see this generation.

Well it very well be that his contract had come up for renewal, and the board at bungie may have decided not to pick up the contract again. Lets remember the Paul McCartney was also involve in the writing.

I'm hoping that 343 will quickly scoop him up.

Blaze9294421d ago

Oh I'm sure Microsoft and 343 will just pick him up

thejigisup4420d ago

He was fired not laid off. I'm sure Bungie didnt fire him for a poor reason and ms will consider that.

randomass1714421d ago

...That's not a good sign. :( He is such a great composer. The Halo soundtracks are just so iconic. And they fired him without cause? I mean what the crap.

Volkama4421d ago

His work was a huge part of what made Halo great. A lot of people underestimate the impact of a good sound track because it isn't front and centre of the experience, but it makes such a big difference.

He set the tone and pace for every scene, the music was a crucial element in conveying the tension one minute and making the chief feel like an all-mighty badass the next.

Hopefully he'll still have a passion for games, as I'm sure plenty of other studios will take him on if he wants to keep at it.

Gazondaily4421d ago

Agreed. Music is a BIG part of Halo. It sets the moment of the scene. I was so pumped whrn I heard the tribal chanting in The Silent Cartographer level in Halo CE and it's rhe music that helps the music linger on to this day.

Same with Ocarina of Time and Super Mario 64.

randomass1714421d ago

I hope so too. Maybe he can even score a Hollywood film. I just hope he keeps composing for big projects.

MaxwellBuddha4421d ago

@Volkama

Agreed.

If Microsoft has half a brain, they'll hire him STAT and put him to work composing for the next Gears of War entry.

prankster4421d ago

"Terminate Without Cause" is an HR term which means they came to a severance agreement. This means that the terminated employee can not pursue a lawsuit against their former employer.

GamersHeaven4421d ago

Damn he was one of the best things about the Halo series crazy news in the gaming industry so far this year.

BadgerDeluxe4421d ago

I really can't wait for an explanation. I want to give Bungie the benefit of the doubt, but "terminated without cause"? That makes me pretty pissed off... especially with someone of Marty's stature.

randomass1714421d ago

Yeah someone with as much history as O'Donnell deserves a more ceremonious leave than that. This whole thing just leaves me feeling really somber. :(

lsujester4421d ago

Not trying to knock the guy, but doesn't everyone who gets fired say it was "without cause" or a "BS reason"?

BadgerDeluxe4421d ago

Unfortunately, yes. There's always two sides to every story, as they say, so I guess we'll find out.

rainslacker4421d ago

In my experience, having fired many people when I was a manager, 99% of them go on to say how they did nothing wrong.

On a side note, I always enjoyed it since the invention of Facebook and MySpace to read their posts so all their friends could validate their egos by saying what an a**hole their boss is.

Personally live in an "at will" work state, so not much people could do about it so long as they weren't let go due to any of the isms.

prankster4421d ago

I posted this above but here is is again. "Terminate Without Cause" is an HR term which means they came to a severance agreement. This means that the terminated employee can not pursue a lawsuit against their former employer.

NovusTerminus4421d ago

... WTF?! He was so amazing...

Tbf Phil's probably run out of pocket money for a while after his spending spree and it's not a good look to ask MS for an advance just to pay the little people what they're due.

MadLad1563d ago

Do you have any idea on the lawsuit, itself? Or are you just making words happen?

GhostofHorizon1563d ago

I thought you mentioned you were a union representative. Weird to see you jumping in this quick to damage control for Microsoft on this issue.

Ristul1563d ago (Edited 1563d ago )

Way to go standing up for the multi billion dollar company instead of the snall people. You have earned an achievement "corporate tool".

MadLad1562d ago

I always find it funny when someone will make an obviously instigating comment, but then it's the the person who addresses it that has the issue.

Then again N4G is a bubble and used as a safe space for many who happen to game on one specific plastic box.

@ghost

I am a union representative. I looked over the lawsuit. I found no real credibility in it, no more so than the jackass kid on the Nirvana cover now seeking millions in "damages" decades later.
Calling out BS lawsuits had nothing to do with supporting the big companies they're held against.

He was saying it was child abuse and used without permission this is an issue that a licensing agreement was in place for music and sounds made before Bungie was bought by MS. You really think the two are comparable?

They have also received royalties from MS their issue is that they don't think it is enough. The two aren't even close to being similar.

Who is in the right I nor can you say since you really don't know the ins and outs but to compare the two is laughable.

MadLad1562d ago

@tfjwm

Apparently your reading comprehension holds as much merit as you attributing my knowledge on law.

I didn't say they were comparable. I said they were as meritless as each other. Two very different things that would hold virtually no weight in court.

Profchaos1562d ago

Microsoft own Azure a large portion of business in the world uses it in varying capacities and spend anywhere between$5 to 50 per employee per month.
They generate money from all of their fixed licensing products windows, server, scom,sccm, exchange etc as a example.
They make money from computer hardware now
They probably have many undisclosed revenue streams.

Over in the corner is Xbox making a little but Xbox doesn't need to make money it just needs to promote Microsoft and elevate their brand reputation to be more relavent.

This lawsuit will be paid Microsoft have a near endless bucket of money

jznrpg1562d ago (Edited 1562d ago )

Then why not just pay it on time and pay what they should ??

DarXyde1562d ago

In this entire comment, I just have one question:

How can something be "near endless"?

-Foxtrot1563d ago

Whether the show is good or bad one of the things missing from the main trailer was the original music, felt soulless without it

They should just pay them, it's not like they don't have the money

Bladesfist1563d ago

From reading the article they are paying them, the complaint is that there is no transparency on how much Microsoft is earning off of Halo music and so they don't know if they are being paid enough.

-Foxtrot1563d ago

So they aren't releasing numbers...

Gee...that's a first

just_looken1562d ago

This is what lord of the rings did also very shady

ZwVw1563d ago

Didn't Marty just lose a big court case against Bungie for releasing Destiny tracks to the public without their consent? Guess, he's got to find some way to pay those extravagant court fees.

ZeekQuattro1563d ago

Well he has to rob Peter in order to pay Paul. It happens. Lol

NewEnds01861562d ago (Edited 1562d ago )

They will get paid.

First Marty was the hero, then turned out to the villain, and now this. It's a shame that this all happened, but there's no denying he's talented.

darthv721814d ago

Looks like he in some sort of legal trouble...
https://twitter.com/MartyTh...

annoyedgamer1814d ago

Thats sad, he is my favorite composer next to Hans Zimmer.

TheColbertinator1814d ago

He should be hired for the XCOM 3 soundtrack

BlackIceJoe1814d ago

I really hope Marty O'Donnell won't retire from gaming, because he knows his stuff and I personally wish more game studios would go to him for music.

DragonWarrior191814d ago

With how venomous the younger gaming community is these days, they don't deserve him. He's done wonderful things and the industry has done nothing but shit on him in the last couple years. I don't blame him for wanting to retire. Watching how toxic and hateful the internet has become just makes me wish it would go away sometimes.
