has this guy even played the final fantasy games??? each game is not only different characters and stories, the battle system is different. The name simply means your going to get a first class effort from square. Look what they did for the battle system in FF12. This guy is just an rpg hater. You could say kill the FPS genre off altogether. What has that done new?? Stories are always bland and all you do is strafe and shoot. Crap more than half the time its the same guns with different skin. I guess they should stop making call of duty games. Of course they shouldn't because there great. yes COD4 was different spin, but every final fantasy has a different spin. haha not to a fanboy or anything, but I promise you if FF was on xbox there wouldn't be so many kill FF articles. haha what is this the third in a week??

haze is more intence than halo. IMO halo is for 12 yr olds, haze is badass. MLB 08 the show- is the best baseball game. and you can never get rid of sonic. not into FF. but halo needs to come to an end because its has stayed the same for the most part. and so does madden (no offense madden)cause the controls are very Fing complicated nowa days.

Ok, this is flame bait here, but i am going put my guns down and think rationally.

Final fantasy should be excluded from this because just because the NAME is the same, DOES NOT mean the game is. Each final fantasy game is different from the last. (excluding sequels to a specific ff title) Lets take ff7 compared to ff8, (ff9 to ff10, or ff6 to ff13 etc etc) they are not related in ANYWAY! theres no character or story tying in one story line to another. I think they keep all the games under one franchise name for 3 reasons...

1. They're lazy and its hard to come up with a DAMN GOOD name for EACH FF game. What would have ff7 been named? Fall of shinra? Ancients last wish? NO!! How about ff10? Gonna call it SIN? Blitzball & LOVE? NO!! AND! you run the risk of sounding redundant, because even tho there are thousands of words in the english language something tells me each game is going to start or end with legend,power,dragon,star,cryst al, and moon. Hell those words are random but if you put them together the right way you get a name like... Legend of crystal dragon:Power of the Moon Star.

2. Its to establish a kind of QUALITY with a franchise NAME so that the general public know what caliber the game will be. If ff3 was bad ass, the public will remember, 'hey FF games are long lasting, well made games, so i know thats money well spent'. Because we ALL know just because company X did damn good making a game called Y does not mean the next game they making called Z is going to be that good too.

3. It keeps a kind of order, making it easier to remember. Because im prolly going to remember the name of a specific FF game by its number, rather then remembering a random ass name like crono cross, or legend of dragoon.

Its funny though, cause if they were called different games no one would care.

the only similarities tend to be with the initial set up (bunch of peeps going out on an adventure)
what they do on this adventure however isn't always "saving the world from definite catastrophy"

look at ff as a kind of genre in itself, but within that genre there's loads of subgenres.
Saying "on noes all ff's are the same"
is akin to saying all action games are the same. No some are third person shooters, some are tactical sneaking like mgs, others combine elements of other genres i.e. vehicles, some are open world.

Really though, Halo could use a spot on this list. Bungie has failed to innovate the gameplay in any significant way since Halo first came out. Halo 3 was a massive disappointment for a number of reasons. The graphics didn't live up to the next-gen hardware, the gameplay was stale, and the story sucked!

In no way did Halo 3 live up to that first trailer that came out. What makes it even worse is that they come out w/ all these map packs that are just rehashed older maps. Give me a break!

They can tack on all the extra features they want - forge, new vehicles, map editor, different weapons, but it doesn't matter if the gameplay never makes any improvements. For one of the hottest selling titles on 360 their reluctance to innovate this game is unacceptable. Part of being a great dev. is taking risks on not relying on the same old conventions you've been using for a while.

If Final Fantasy isn't worn out, then Zelda and Mario isn't worn out as well. Both owners of the above franchise are doing the same thing, milking them dry, but the fans just keep eating it up no matter what.

Western developers believe they've surpassed them but honestly, they have a lot to learn. Dead Rising is probably the most fun I had on my 360 before it died and I traded it for a PS3, Halo, Gears, Oblivion etc were all flavour of the month and pretty much sucked in a lot of ways.

They forgot to put Worms on the list, surely it is a worn out franchise considering the original was and still is the best with all subsequent sequels only adding gimmicks that dilute the enjoyment.

Seriously, the similarity between the different FF-games is much smaller than the similarities between the wide variety of shooters out there. I can't imagine how you could bash an FF-game and NOT a shooter. Not that I say that shooters are all the same, because they are not. But they are in the core the same, and in larger numbers.

My guess is that those who say that FF is worn out haven't played the games or just don't like them and that they are so popular that they can't help but whine about them.

...why do people keep mentioning Halo? Didn't Halo end at the third game? I know there's going to be Halo Wars, but that's a completely different game just like the difference between the FF games.
I'd drop GTA on that list and get Rockstar to make movies with their great characters, humor, and stories. GTA IV proved that they've screwed up for good.

Umm excuse me, Final Fantasy is far from worn-out. As time goes by it keeps getting better and better. It's always had rich and involving plots (FFX was my favourite), and some of the characters are the best I've ever seen in any type of media, not just video gaming.

I admit I didn't like FFXII, I didn't take to the characters and found the story to be weak. Maybe I should have stuck with it, but I gave my PS2 away and my PS3 isn't backward compatible. Which is a shame because I'd love to replay FFX and give FFXII another go.

Is just the name. Every single Final Fantasy (besides X and X2) have been different in characters, world, story and gameplay. The battle system have evolved as FF titles continue to be released. Last good FF's were not 6 and 9. What about VII, VIII, X, XII? I will agree about the World War II games... and, of course, about Sonic. But I'm getting tired of people criticizing the FF franchise because they have nothing better to write about. This guy obviously hasn't played FF's much if he considers 9 to be the last 'good' one.

Stupid to put Final Fantasy and Mario Kart there. Mario Kart DS was amazing and by far the best in the franchise except for the first one of SNES and Mario Kart 64. And some of the Final Fantasy's are alright but when the put out good titles like FFX and FFXII the series still has life. The Tactics form of the series is just as solid as well and gives more of a Deseiga/Fire Emblem approach. And although FFXI isn't that good they at least ventured into something new and different. Just know Final Fantasy is the name associated with anything they put out. I guess you could put it in the genre like Tom Clancy's.... on the titles. Think of the FF titles as Final Fantasy presents......

After my Bluray player on my PS3 died 2 times and kept freezing, and playing choppy multiplat titles, horrible lag on the PSN, I finally bought a 360 and never looked back.

The FF series has been horrible over that last while, there is absolutely no innovation, it all so lifeless. They definately need to kill this series, it sell worse all the time with a bigger and bigger fanbase on the PS2, shouldn't it grow with more people?

The FF series is easily the most worn-out franchise of all time. I personally like the CGI movies of the games but the actual gameplay sucks. Every game is the same. Same silly metrosexual characters. The same badass character. And the same chick with bunny ears. I'm good at just watching the CGI parts on youtube.

I will give this guy props for calling out most of these games. Even Mario Kart, I don't feel the same way but I get his point. But Final Fantasy. Here is how this works. The Final Fantasy series is what all RPG's strive to be. They are almost always near perfection. So if they are the golden egg of RPG's, then why would they stop making these games. Every sequel they reinvent the series. And every time it sends waves through the RPG community.

Even with a Final Fantasy VXXIII, that will always be good, and we'll want more FFs.

Who keeps buying Dynasty Warriors games? Do they even have a plot? Or is it still just kill bazillions of people that look exactly the same over and over until you die? Those types of games can be killed with fire for all I care, but I guess some people like them.

I haven't picked up a Final Fantasy since VII. That game consumed so much of my life that I don't think I could ever commit to another one. Too many sleepless nights from just not wanting to turn it off...oh man!

Something that I think is overdone these days is shooters, period. Halo 3 bored me to tears and I just suck at the run-and-gun mechanics of many shooters today. The gameplay is so repetitive to me.

C'mon, every FFs have their own stories, their own gameplay, own character and own style. It's not even sequels or franchise with almost same gameplay.

I'm expecting a lot of heat from this one, but honestly, since when is Final Fantasy even a series? I think Square Enix should just continue to focus on completely new and original IP, rather than re-implementing much of the same old tired gameplay and conventions of the franchise, which they have begun to do in recent years. (applause) Sure, give us RPGs, but make them unique and fresh - and don't pretend that they have anything to do with previous entries if they are completely stand-alone titles, and don't handcuff yourselves with an obligation to stick by those old conventions with each new game. Ceasing the FF cycle will allow creativity to blossom even further. I mean, how "final" is it when every new game, regardless of genre or subject matter, has the same title?

I don't believe for a second the final fantasy series will ever get "worn-out". Some of the games out there today I'll pick up, play for about 2 hours and I myself get worn out and tired of it i.e. Halo. I think me and my friends still have more fun with Goldeneye than we have had with the Halo series. But any Final Fantasy that's out there now I can play and not get "worn-out" from it.

Sega should have taken better care of the sonic franchise. The last sonic game I really enjoyed playing was sonic 2.
