How The Evil Within Fails at Horror | IGN

IGN: The Evil Within’s evocative environments effectively convey a sense of dread, lending meaningful weight to the psychological horrors happening around protagonist Sebastian. In a mysterious city full of zombie-like citizens hell-bent on murdering our hero, skyscrapers crumble, ascend into the sky, or close in around him.

It’s a magnificent spectacle. You or I would react with awe, disbelief, terror, shock, panic, and a range of other emotions that might display awareness of our surroundings. Sebastian never expresses anything about what’s happening to him. Somehow, he’s less invested in the mystery and horror here than me.

Rikitatsu4430d ago

Wat.

Also, IGN's main gripe is that the main character doesn't respond to the scares around him? Pssht...

Army_of_Darkness4430d ago

Fails at horror?? this game?? Damn, I must be a sissy girl then because the latest trailer already creeps me out and makes me dread playing this game cause I know I'm gonna be taking baby steps throughout the game when I get it.

sinspirit4430d ago

Maybe animations like to make him shiver or flinch and stuff that don't blow his cover but most of the responses are supposed to be to the player not the character.

Mankey4430d ago

Taking more of a wait and see approach to this title. Big fan of the director.

MrSwankSinatra4430d ago

i think the main problem is that the character you play as doesn't convey emotions to his surroundings and honestly that is understandable point.

randomass1714430d ago

We can't make a judgement like that based on early, unfinished and unplayable video of a demo. No one has even had a chance to actually play the game. This is sensationalism on IGN's part.

Baccra174430d ago

Sounds a lot like Resident Evil 4- the game that ruined Survivor Horror and birthed RE5&6.

It'll probably be a good game worth getting, but it won't be much of a survivor horror game. I'd be happy for it to come out and prove me wrong though in the positive sense.

mhunterjr4430d ago (Edited 4430d ago )

Sounds exactly like the old resident evil games, for better or worse...

Hell even the title 'the evil within' is another way of saying 'resident evil'

I'll take a wait and see I approach with this one...

Shinox4430d ago (Edited 4430d ago )

Ok confused !
How is this has anything to do with the original RE games !?
Its just a RE4 with Silent Hill Vibe and that's it, its not like its going to take the legacy of the Original RE games , This game literally a copycat of RE4 and comes from the same creator of RE4 , The game is filled with Action aspects and might had less puzzles , let alone we still don't know if it had puzzles to take the legacy crown

on_line_forever4430d ago

Shinox

you are right if this game will fail it will fail because its a copycat of RE4 and involving silent hill elements will make the fail quickly .

lets say this :

RE4 ruined the Resident Evil series .

silent hill scary elements is just for silent hill not any other game .

that's what i see and what i feel .

randomass1714430d ago

I have faith in Mikami. He has never let me down before and I anticipate this to be another great masterpiece. :)

nope1114430d ago (Edited 4430d ago )

Sounds pretty much like RE4, which isn't a bad thing, but of course typical IGN posted a clickbait header title.

MrSwankSinatra4430d ago (Edited 4430d ago )

RE4 ruined the Resident Evil series, that game has absolutely nothing to do with the series besides the characters. At least the Evil Within is a new IP something that RE4 should have been.

randomass1714430d ago

RE4 by no means "ruined" anything. Shinji Mikami innovated and made the gameplay more streamlined and less clunky. It's the games after (that were made without Mikami) that completely destroyed what the franchise was about. Evil Within is a new beast entirely and I expect it to be as fun as it will be spooky.

Hicken4430d ago

Sorry, but no. I'm no horror fan, but even I'm aware of how well received the fourth game was.

Now, if you were talking about RE5, I could agree.

Sevir4429d ago

Lol, RE4 was amazing and is possibly the Best Resident Evil game made. The previous ones before were limited by hardware constraints and cheap archaic designs.

To me though. This game doesn't seem scary, its has this over reliance on warping environments, and the mechanics look like they are taken straight out of RE4, which WAS amazing for the PS2 and GameCube Era, now, those mechanics are archaic and now run of the mil third person shooter baselines...

You need more nuances and subtle animations on top of mechanics that puts a twist on the formula, you need to have the character portray fear and behave as if they are threatened and afraid to sell the fear, or the environments as dreadful as they look only does so much with predictable scares..

The Last of Us is by Far the scariest Survival Horror game I've played and its not even a horror.

I'll wait and see, but this game still seems to be saddled with the very thing thats crippling Horror games this day and age.

SaturdayNightBeaver4430d ago

They presented a slight subjective issue like an enormous mistake. That Mitch guy is not even horror fan at all , and they made him do preview. He basically cried like a baby over something not even important in a game like this. Its an action-horror shooter/adventure , its not some kind of fear simulation and main goal of the game is bringing the emotion to the player himself to feel , no character on screen needs to scream and shout about stuff. Hes a strong man and detective not some crybaby like one in Outlast or Amnesia , its different and Mitch idiot did not understand it.

The Evil Within Deserved More: A Great Horror Series Left Behind

The Outerhaven writes: While I hold Bethesda's The Evil Within series as some of the best Survival Horror games available, it's clear that Bethesda has no intention of revisiting the series. While Capcom is still working on its Resident Evil series, I look back at the now-dead survival horror series from Bethesda, wondering why the series was left wide open, and yet still not revisited.

An OK horror series left behind. It had some great ideas, but it never knew how to play to its strengths. Instead, it came out like just another RE4 clone.

I would love for a third entry to come out, but it needs to learn to lean in on the psychological aspect and move away from the generic "pew pew" ideology at the center of the gameplay loop. It doesn't need to abandon it; it just needs to put it into better context, is all.

Also, try a first-person perspective instead. Too many 3rd-person games with nothing to offer but an avatar taking precious screen space. At least make it an actual option and not that janky-ass mess the second game pretended to have.

Venoxn4g348d ago

Love both games, hope that we will get third game

...they didn't close, they changed owners. As far as i know HFR2 is still in the works.

Lightning77605d ago

Hifi 2 is still in development. The devs themselves said what they wanted to do with the sequel.

They closed then got new owners

The Evil Within Anniversary Edition?

Good God. We were robbed.

I would imagine they would have improved the graphics and animations to bring them more in line with the second game. Wishful thinking but it would have been really cool if they redid the voice lines from the first game aswell with the same actors from the second, I felt they had more personality in the sequel. The only person I thought gave it a bit more than the others was Jennifer Carpenter as Kidman but the sequels voice actress did a great job aswell.

Microsoft is going to do f*** all with the IP and we'll never see a second Ruvik and Seb showdown.

I hope Krafton goes back and gets it after Hi-Fi Rush 2 if it was only because they didn't want the initial purchase to get complicated.

Neonridr604d ago

I preferred the first game to the second to be honest.

-Foxtrot604d ago

I wasn't really making a point at what game was overall better, just the voices were so flat in the first one and it would be nice if the animations and the like would be improved upon.

FinalFantasyFanatic604d ago

I really got to get around to playing the first one, I really liked the second game.

Venoxn4g604d ago

It hurts so bad knowing that there might have been new content for Evil Within..love those games

CrimsonWing69604d ago

This is one of those things I’ll never forgive Xbox for.

127maXimus604d ago

What a stupid, short sided move by Microsoft. Comparatively it would have been cheap for them to hang onto their only Japanese studio, with actually good games that people want to play. I struggle to understand how Phil Spencer is still employed. At this point it is Kathleen Kennedy levels of failure.

BlackIceJoe603d ago

Well said about him being Microsoft's version of Kathleen Kennedy.

All he has been doing is to destroy Xbox and it is unbelievable he falls upwards.

This shouldn't have happened.

Who's next..

JEECE714d ago

Ninja Theory, most likely.

tay8701714d ago

Ninja theory. Others will follow as well. The smaller studios MS owns should all be worried. Maybe MS will try and release some of their games day and date on ps5 to save some of these studios.

jznrpg714d ago

I can see Ninja Theory. At least Tango made a game that was reviewed well. Ninja Theory spent a lot of years to release a tech demo that didn’t do well at all.

repsahj714d ago

I get it that Hellblade 2 is a boring game, but I hope they are not the next to be closed.

ABizzel1714d ago

@repssahj

Ninja Theory is likely on the chopping block too. They released Bleeding Edge which bombed, took 4 years to release Hellbalde 2 which doesn’t seem to be doing well, and still have Project Mara in limbo. They’re high on the chopping block.

MS was likely expecting their God of War / Uncharted quality game from NT based on Heavenly Sword, Enslaved, DmC, and to an extent Hellblade 1, but NT hasn’t delivered since Hellblade 1 which was 7 years ago.

anast714d ago

Sad, but I see characters and posters of either less than average or barely average games.

LoveSpuds714d ago

Have to disagree here duder, with respect. Evil Within was a good game and the sequel was fantastic, as was HiFi Rush. I'd concede Ghostwire was pretty average but regardless, shuttering a studio which just put out MS best game in donkeys years was complete shithousery on XBox' part.

Einhander1972714d ago (Edited 714d ago )

Microsoft paid 8B to buy Zenimax then fired well over 1000 people from Zenimax between the time they closed the deal and they announced these shut downs.

People talk about the 1900 they fired most recently, but that was only one wave of three sets of layoffs from their gaming division so far this generation totalling around 5000 people this generation. Not counting the dozen plus studios they canned last gen including Lionhead the original Fable developers.

anast714d ago

By every real metric HiFi was an average game. I don't see an Evil within poster in the thumb, which is a shame, because if they threw their weight behind that IP, they might have still been around.

LoveSpuds714d ago

I don't understand how you can say it was average in every metric when it garnered the reviews it did?
