Xbox One might win the console war through competitive gaming

We stand in the midst of a console war between Xbox One and PlayStation 4, we see that Microsoft will be separating themselves from the competition by providing and catering for the competitive console community. Today we take a look at exactly what Microsoft are doing to promote Xbox One sales.

AceBlazer134458d ago

So those MLG guys? Choose Xbox One but like that CoD championship they're the best on Xbox.Anyone truly looking for competition and not whatever MLG offers would certainly choose the console with most players.More players means more competition.

GoPanthers9994458d ago

X1 is THE shooter console. Look at the exclusives: Titanfall, Halo and Gears. I like shooters, I play on Xbox, would be a great slogan.

SegaGamer4458d ago

And it's why i am not the biggest fan of Microsoft consoles. I hated the original Xbox, it was full of shooters, it bored me to death sharing that console with my brothers as a kid. The Xbox 360 had a bit more variety but was still full of too many shooters and Xbox One are off to a similar start.

It's why i feel the other consoles are better. The focus isn't just on the shooters.

xDHAV0K24x4458d ago

a bit more variety? a TON of variety.

Killzone Uncharted and The Last Of US can you run dive drop a grenade while diving climb buildings cliffs ledges hang from windows ledges shoot while hanging pull people off ledges and threw windows kick people off ledges grab people in cover and bash their heads off the wall take them out with a dive between the legs ball bash and all that without skipping and gliding around like a bunch of ferry's. Uncharted 3 does and it takes some skill and time to get good at it. Especially since Activision seems to be jumping ships Uncharted 4 The Last Of Us and the ps4 doing so well a lot of people who never played them will see how good they are. So I don't see the xbox1 competitive gaming being any better

SixtyNine4458d ago (Edited 4458d ago )

The key is Xbox Live, the service is still unmatched as far console gaming go..

plut0nash4458d ago

Disagree. I found XBL to be lacking in value-added extras, which is what most people would go for.

Lawboy24458d ago (Edited 4458d ago )

ps+ games are a joke...and I wish ppl would stop using them as an argument...I much rather have the old system back where you have the choice to buy ps+ or not because I do not play the games they give unless its on the vita...I don't see why we have to pay to play online when there is not a multitude of games to play online on the ps4...on the other hand almost every game that is out for the xbox one has some type of multiplayer...I feel I get more out of the money ive spent to PLAY GAMES ONLINE on the xbox one

@WEARELEGION

but there is a difference just look at the games you can play online for each console

xbox one
ryse
dr3
forza
Titanfall
Plants v Zombies
ACIV
NFS
COD ghost
BF4
Tomb Raider

Ps4
Killzone
Knack
COD Ghost
BF
ACVI
NFS
TRDE

I just wish we could go back to the days of ps3 where we didn't have to pay for ps+ or atleast give us more games to play online

I know I will get disagrees but its true...I could go without ps+ and be perfectly fine with my ps4 because I would not be missing out on anything...the free games are a gimmick just to get ppl to buy the subscription....sad thing is the free games are not my cup of tea

@ war legion
I have a ps4 and ps+
like I said the ps+ games are a joke...ive only downloaded outlast and dead nation hated dead nation and didn't even bother with mercenary kings...they are not my cup of tea
and in that case add to the xbox one list

crimson dragon
halo Spartan Assault
peggle 2
Kinect sports rivals

those also allow you to use the online that you pay for

also correct me if im wrong but don't F2p games and mmo's you don't have to have ps+ to play those games

also war thunder is not out in US

WeAreLegion4458d ago (Edited 4458d ago )

You've never even seen a PlayStation 4, have you?

You forgot...
Mercenary Kings
Warframe
Blacklight: Retribution
Final Fantasy XIV
War Thunder
Dead Nation
Towerfall
Resogun
Injustice: Gods Among Us

GarrusVakarian4458d ago (Edited 4458d ago )

@Lawboy2

"like I said the ps+ games are a joke...ive only downloaded outlast and dead nation hated dead nation and didn't even bother with mercenary kings...they are not my cup of tea "

You're doing it again, saying they are a joke just because *you* don't like them. It's subjective. If you don't like the PS4 PS plus offerings so far then that's cool, but many people do like them.

Also, what do you expect so soon after launch? You actually have to have a big enough back library of games before you can start putting them on PS plus. Give it a while, then you will no doubt see the kind of titles you are expecting from PS plus on PS4. Just look at the PS3's offerings. Phenomenal.

WeAreLegion4458d ago

I'd say they're on par. There is absolutely no difference, in my experience.

GarrusVakarian4458d ago (Edited 4458d ago )

Agreed, in terms of actual MP gaming, both experiences have been identical for me. 140 hours on BF4 on PS4 and around 25 on TF on X1 and both have been just as smooth (apart from matchmaking in TF sometimes being a little annoying and EA being EA with BF4)....the actual networks themselves have been identical in my experience. I don't get it when people say XBL is better than PSN for online gaming.

@Lawboy2 ^^^

"ps+ games are a joke."

Really?

"because I do not play the games they give unless its on the vita"

Ohhhh, because *you* don't play them. Ok, gotcha.

4458d ago
Lawboy24458d ago (Edited 4458d ago )

@ lukas
so because you like them they are not a joke...im lost its my opinion...I think the free games are a joke I pay for my online service to play online games...but other than the multiplats there are really no online games on the ps4...I actually think im going to get rid of ps+ because...TOO ME its pointless

I will be getting all my single player multiplats on the ps4 and all my online games on the xbox one

the exclusives actually should determine which service you should pay for and the ps4 exclusives thus far (other than killzone) don't use online...I don't need online to play infamous nor will I need it for the order 1886

im sorry you disagree with me...its simply my opinion

@ lukas

I do believe that the ps+ games on the ps3 are superb and for my vita its amazing....im just not sure I want to shell out $110 a year for two subscriptions especially when I feel like im not getting the most out of one of them...I understand some ppl weigh there consideration on the free games I am not one of them...Im a huge halo/gears/COD fan so ive mainly just played those three games last gen...I would only by live to play halo and gears and the use my ps3 to play COD...but now that I have to pay to play online its a different decision now

GarrusVakarian4458d ago (Edited 4458d ago )

@jumpman and Lawboy2

Well, im so used to saying 'in my opinion' or 'IMO' all the time, so when i see someone say something like "PS plus games are a joke", it sounds like they are passing off their opinion as universal fact to me.

I don't disagree with you about your choice not to pay for PS plus for singleplayer titles, i just disagree that you didn't specific your opinion about PS plus games on PS4 is all.

SixtyNine4458d ago (Edited 4458d ago )

offering 'free' games does not make PSN on par with Xbox live. Live has always been the leading online service between PSN and Live. That's doesn't mean PSN isn't functional. It is also a good service, only second to Live. Live is probably one of the main pros of Xbox.

When you think multiplayer gaming, you think Xbox. They are also more experienced in that field. It's gonna get even better with Xbox ONE. All that dedicated servers and so on.

Choc_Salties4458d ago

Xbox live was mandatory, PSN wasn't until the arrival of the PS4, for multiplayer, and nowadays it is, and you still get "more" out of PSN than you do from XBL.

Me, Iim still happy with how Steam does most things, and the best part is, its still free! and hopefully, remain so

Whitey2k4458d ago

These people talk trash first of activision has just shifted to ps4 secondly theres more support for ps4 then there was for ps3 sony has much better dev teams then ms that ms has to rely basically on third party devs

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio56d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing56d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9256d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit56d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing56d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9256d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn258d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers58d ago (Edited 58d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn257d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown58d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos58d ago (Edited 58d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay57d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay57d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac57d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger58d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300058d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde58d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood58d ago (Edited 58d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde57d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

Reaper22_57d ago

Why would they pull out? They have the momentum. Sony has been getting nothing but bad news lately.
