Do Consoles Really Need Backwards Compability?

As with every new generation of console gaming, fans have revered one particular (albeit absent) feature of next-gen consoles above various others, with many demanding it upon its omission: backwards compatibility.

From the good to the bad, and the nostalgic, Alex discusses why backwards compatibility is so big among console gamers, and how necessary it really is

I agree. Yes - to some degree. Last generation just had way too many gems. Honestly. When more games start to come out for current gen - last generation gaming will start becoming less and less important.

But the drought we are facing now, they should have at least had some kind of options for SOME titles to be playable - like GTA V, more recent big titles - kinda like when the Xbox 360 launched with limited title support.

But then again, i bet you all they are gonna do are make remasters and sell it to us again. Afterall, they are businesses. How easy is that. Take it away and resell it, slightly better. lol

that sound good for me

Backwards Compatibility is just a bonus. It's not a necessity.

The past is the past. We enjoyed the old games while they were relevant. In other words, everything has its time or period. We need to move on and embrace the future. I could care less about BC on PS4 since I still have my PS3, but PS Now looks promising.

the BC is not integrated in the console, and that's understandable.

Sathur4426d ago

At one time I would have liked backward compatibility but now I am not that interested. I was all for it when I moved from Xbox to Xbox360,but few games worked and I quickly lost interest in favour of 360 games. Now I have a Wiiu with backward ability, but to be honest I rarely use it. WiiU games are just too good..FACT.
I also have a PS4 now. Don't need it for PS4. I will gladly pay again to play The Last Of Us. I am waiting for Tomb Raider to drop in price also.
As for Xbox One there is no need either. I have moved on to Next Gen now. Bring on Skyrim 2. Not Elder Scrolls Online.. Skyrim 2 The ultimate one player game.

MysticStrummer4426d ago

When I bought my PS2 I thought it was cool to have the option to play my PS1 games… but then I never played them.

When I bought my PS3 I thought it was cool to have the option to play my PS1 and PS2 games… but then I never played them.

BC just isn't important to me. On the rare occasion I do play an old game, I'm always shocked at how bad it looks compared to my memory of it. I prefer to remember those old games fondly while I play the new stuff and think about how far gaming has come.

marloc_x4426d ago

PS4 should have enough power to incorporate this feature. Unless you are trying to sell gamers NOW?

Irishguy954426d ago

It's an extremely desired feature and its simply not happening. Thats all. Don't need articles about it every month or so

Just bought a Wii U, NEVER owned a Wii.

Having BC on the Wii U, helps a lot because now I get to play games like Super Mario Galaxy 1&2 + Twilight Princess & Skyward Sword finally.

* For me at least, this will help when there is down time in between game releases.

I have other systems to game on too, so that helps as well, but having BC is IMO always a good thing.

* BC on Wii = Awesome
* BC on Wii U = Awesome
* BC on Xbox 360 = Awesome
* BC on PS3 = Awesome

Did PS2 have it ?

Either way, it's definitely a benefit, as it increase the library a ton.

* 3DS + DS Library of 1,000+ games = Awesome.

aquamala4426d ago

without BC if your old consoles die you'll have to buy another replacement, how many people still want to buy a PS3/360 for $200-$250? if you don't replace it you just lost your library of games

MNGamer-N4426d ago

It's nice because you can reduce the number of machines under your TV, and still keep your game library available to play without hassle. So I think it is imortant and wish Sony and MS would do it like Nintendo did.

N4g_null4426d ago

It only matters when you have addictive good games to play and when game prices reach dirt cheap.

starchild4426d ago

I agree. It's a very desirable feature.

Neonridr4426d ago

Sure why not. Seeing as the PS4 is my first Sony console imagine how much larger my library of games would become.

randomass1714426d ago

It definitely is a great thing to have. It helps you save some money by selling the old console in favor of the new one. And I think many people like relegating all of their content onto one device.

kayoss4426d ago

To me, Backward compatibility is a nice to have but not a requirement for next gen.
But if backward compatibility were to be implemented, i would rather them focus BC for the previous gen (example Ps4 should be BC for PS3 games)give consumers a chance to play their Ps3 games that they didnt get a chance to play on their next gen system. We do not need BC for games that are 2-4 generation old from the current gen. But thats just my opinion.

Samsara824426d ago

you are right....I think people are making too big a deal of this...I think it's a fun feature but it is in no way necessary...I think BC can be good for people that made the switch from one console to the competitor so they get to try games from the last few years they might have missed...

I personally thought it was cool to have that on my 360 and Wii but you go back to these games you end up playing once for an hour and then let it collect dust...
Let's face it, other than the classics, games don't necessarily age well...

ginsunuva4426d ago (Edited 4426d ago )

"why not"

Sometimes (like this gen) it's actually physically impossible on the hardware level.
Unless it's PSNow Cloud BC, which is the reason why they had to do it.

Neonridr4426d ago

the question wasn't whether or not it was technically feasible, but a yes/no would you want backwards compatibility. I said yes, I would.

Benjaminkno4426d ago

Apparently, they don't "need" to, but I think Nintendo should get more props for possessing it.

randomass1714426d ago

I agree with you there. While the Wii U has its faults, I think its backwards compatibility should be seen as a plus. All those Wii games out there are viable content for the console. :)

ginsunuva4426d ago

That's because the Wii was so weak that someone could probably emulate in on mobile soon.

Neonridr4426d ago

running Dolphin (Wii emulator) takes a toll on even a very fast PC.

Benjaminkno4426d ago (Edited 4426d ago )

That may be, but you wouldn't say that if you played through Metroid Prime 3, on advanced controls. It looks just as good as any 360 game.

You're one of those graphics-hores that doesn't PC, aren't you.

starchild4426d ago

It's also one reason I love gaming on PC. All my games continue to work and actually look better with every upgrade.

iplay1up24426d ago

I like them to be. Now I have to have my PS3/PS4 and Wii U all out. I did put my Wii away, but now I can not play Gamecube games, but that's okay.

My Wii games look better on my Wii U, and there are still Wii games I like to throw in sometimes, Like Smash Bros.

KentBlake4426d ago

Yes, of course. I have a PS3, a 360, a WiiU and a PS4. If the PS4 and X1 were backwards compatible, I could get rid of my PS3 and 360. This way, I'd have free HDMI ports and shelf space and could buy a X1 and still have access to all my games. But as it is now, I can't buy an X1 because I don't have a place to connect it or even fit it.

-Foxtrot22d ago

Funny considering Bruce left half way through development and now we get told there was an internal conflict with the story direction.

Makes you think…

HectixRose23d ago

I think it was good decision, if he was still alive, he would have been a mascot just like Kratos, drake and many others. These old dudes gotta die for new characters to take center stage with their own storyline. They keep dragging the emotional baggage into many sequels and eventually the story just turns into absolute shit show.

JEECE23d ago

It was ironic because people complained heavily about the story in the Uncharted games not having sufficient stakes because all the key characters always survived, despite the dangerous situations they were always in. Then ND killed a character in a more serious series and everyone lost their minds. Just shows that people don't always really want the thing they say they want.

CantThinkOfAUsername22d ago

I thought the more common complaint about Uncharted franchise was how the main cast are the good guys acting so nonchalantly while killing hundreds in cold blood (aka the dissonance between gameplay and story cutscenes). They just did it again in Part II.

Soy23d ago

Didn't have to kill him. Just have them part ways or Joel can "retire," whatever.

DarXyde23d ago

I don't think he would necessarily need to become a mascot (and besides, technically, I'd say Ellie is... So regardless, someone was going to be).

From a narrative perspective, I do think it has a similar effect to Ricky dying in Boyz N Da Hood: very likeable character, and you're really motivated to see the get back—in this case, it's more intense because it's an interactive experience. Most people hated Abby, but I get what they were after with portraying the cycle of violence and revenge—unfortunately, the game appears to want to take the side of the bad people.

But I will say that if Joel survived, it does become harder to tell an interesting story. What COULD have happened is an exploration into the rift between Joel and Ellie after the trolley dilemma events of the first game. It could have been interesting to see Abby out for revenge at the same time Ellie hated Joel.

Ashunderfire8623d ago

Sorry just had to say this lol! RICKYYYY!

Man Cuba Gooding Jr was miscast in that movie, but that part was cringey it was sad and funny at the same time man.

Ashunderfire8623d ago (Edited 23d ago )

I understand but the way they went about killing Joel, was poorly executed. Even the show of the Last of Us games tried to improved it, but it was just as bad. Well at least Joel got to know the reason why he had to die, before the death happened in the show. That part gave us the full context, but the game just let it happen with no pay off.

Joel death should have been a midway thing through the story, so we at least get to play him a little more with Ellie. Abby didn’t need to be this Hulk looking woman, but more like the show Abby which is a beater idea in my opinion.

The only ND game that was so disappointing to me I couldn't finish it.

pwnmaster300023d ago

Honestly as much as I loved the game, they could have just not killed him off.
I get it creator vision and all but killing a character that made you millions is just wrong imo. At least have him go down fighting.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle23d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments
