Is This the Last Console Generation?

Gamespot:
"Is the home game console market in trouble? Some analysts certainly think so. Despite reports of record-breaking sales for both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, some industry doomsayers are forecasting the end of the home console as we know it, citing increased competition from mobile games, a resurgent PC space, and spiraling costs in AAA-game development. So will the PS4, Xbox One, and Wii U be the last "generation" of consoles? Or will dedicated game machines continue to have a place in our living rooms for many more years to come? Check out what some of our editors think about this vexing issue."

This question get's asked pretty much every generation, and somehow we have been lucky to see the next, but I think in all occasions it always boils down to how well the consoles themselves perform and what's the popular media is at the time.

As far as our Internet infrastructure goes, that has played a bigger role on new consoles being released, because the waters are being tested in the process to see if the cloud is a viable option to a standard console as we know them. Once Internet coverage evolves past slow speeds with at least 18 to 20 mb being standard, then I think consoles as we know them will phase out.

You're going to be waiting a while for those speeds to be standard there buddy.

Not if Google has any say in it. They're rolling Fiber out all over the US (with one of the planned cities being mine), and they're doing so at impossibly aggressive prices!

When they fully roll out their coverage, US IPS (which are notoriously some of the worst in the [developed] world) will HAVE to step up their game or completely lose their "install base."

I can't wait for that day. Three maybe four years? That's where I see us being by 2018.

Actually the multi-tasking multi media console which Sega & Sony started in the 90's has adapted to the times so well they are still the bread and butter of this games industry. 30 million GTA V units and 7 million PS4s are proof of that.

Video game consoles in one form or another will still be relevant for the foreseeable future.

There are two huge gaming market that coexist though:
1. The home gaming market (consoles & PC)
This market is for the core gamers who go for the big screen home gaming experience.
2. The portable handheld gaming market (dedicated & mobile)
A big percentage of this market is comprised of young & casual gamers & with the core gamers as the minority.

But at the rate mobile devices are progressing they might catch up in terms of computing power & graphics making them a hybrid gaming machine small enough to be portable & mobile but powerful enough to deliver high capacity & high resolution games any gamer can hook up on a big screen HD TV.

In 2011 I really thought Sony will launch 2 versions of PS4: a home version and a gaming laptop powerful like PS4 with its own screen.

Nintendo is rumored to be doing a consolidated hybrid home/portable gaming machine.

The Nvidia Shield can be called a portable/home gaming machine.

At this point, still way too early to tell IMO, it's all speculation at this point. If we are judging by how things are going today....no...there will be another gen IMO.

No Click bait .. No.

(Those are the same Reasons you list, every time someone throws one of these stupid articles out there)

-not on the heels of biggest Launches, in history-

hollabox4424d ago

Why do people keep on approving these horse crap articles? With the success of last generation, and this new generation off to an blistering start, why do we need to see another one of these damn articles? Its the same crap with no evidence to back it up, just like politicians trying to say video games are murder simulators but yet are completely ok with people drinking and carrying guns.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio19d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing19d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9219d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit19d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing19d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9219d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
