Totaly agree seemed like there was games out every week for ps2.

But that isn't the reason Sony did so well.

Sony has been the dominant gaming platform from the moment they entered the console market. Sony's PS1 created the modern console market with the 105 million selling PS1. It is hilarious to hear Xbox fans talk about Microsoft's failure with the first Xbox as 'pretty good for a first console'.

When the PS2 was released there were more games for the Dreamcast - Sony won.

When the GameCube and Xbox were released, the situation was reversed - Sony won.

When the Xbox 360 was rushed out the door a year early and 200 dollars cheaper - Sony won.

Even with the tens of millions of duplicate consoles Microsoft sold due to the RRoD fiasco - Sony won.

The Xbox One is released at the same time as the PS4 - Sony is winning.

The only time in the past twenty years that Sony has been in the console market that Sony wasn't the top selling console in the world was the three years or so the Wii fad was in full force.

Other than that brief period at the start of last gen, Sony has been completely dominant.

Sony's playbook has been the same ever since they brought the PS1 to market twenty years ago:

1. Bleeding edge hardware technology that ensures the Playstation platform will be viable for 10+ years. Allowing developers to have a stable base to amortize their development costs over the long sales life of the console.

2. Strong developer support from all three major console regions: Japan, the US, and Europe.

3. Unmatched console hardware manufacturing capabilities. The ability to launch with bleeding edge console hardware that is aggressively cost reduced over the life of the console.

4. Massive first party developer lineup ensuring that gamers get the best possible combination of exclusive Playstation content with content available on other platforms.

The PS3 is selling at a slightly lower rate than the PS2 did.

The PS2 sold 150 million consoles over some 12 years - about 12 million PS2s/year.
The PS3 has sold 85 million consoles over 7.5 years - about 11 million PS3s/year.

When the PS3 finally stops being sold by Sony in five years or so Sony will have been 4/4 with 100+ million selling consoles.

Yes, the PS2 is the most successful Playstation so far, but there really isn't anything unique about it compared to Sony's other Playstation consoles.

The fact it was a DVD player (and a reasonably priced one) was a big factor of its booming success as well.

Basically the console launched at the perfect time with a near flawless mix of games and home entertainment value. It was a dream come true for many people.

bloop4423d ago

@cfc78 I actually remember there was a period of about 4 months that I was buying a game, sometimes 2, every week for the PS2!! It had so many good games that all seemed to arrive around the same time. Man that was an expensive few months.

DragonKnight4423d ago

@SardoNumspa: PS2 beat the Dreamcast because of Sega and their poor marketing/bad budget management.

But the PS2 was largely successful due to it's extensive and massive gaming library, not to mention the plethora of amazing JRPGs and the fact that it spearheaded, and popularized, DVD as a format.

" why was ps2 sooooooo successful"
as rodia above me stated

library of games for all.

not only for hardcore gamers as it is now days. developers afraid to make non-hardcore games these days. now it's either become hardcore gamer or quit playing video games, that is sad. lot of games died out and old school gamers ended their gaming end of ps2-ps3 era

mrmarx4423d ago (Edited 4423d ago )

yup. and they had dx 12 and cloud powah

TwistedMetal4423d ago

1. Dvd player
2. cheap system
3. known name from ps1
3. cheap games.
4. the best games

Clown_Syndr0me4423d ago

Hell yeah so many games! & times were simpler.

Magicite4422d ago

Sony did everything right, competition did everything wrong, simple as that.

1. Came off PS1 hype
2. Had dvd support
3. Came out a year before any formidable competition (<3 Dreamcast though)
4. Had a bandwagon effect where your friends had a ps2, so that was the system to get.
5. Had a wide range of games, and a lot of good ones
6. The competition was both late and lacking. Gamecube had no online play or dvd playback and MS was a newcomer trying to get their foot in the door.

SweetDangos4423d ago (Edited 4423d ago )

I don't see why this has dislikes when everything is true

Thehyph4423d ago

Nailed it.

Point 2 can't be overstated.
First real mainstream product for consuming digitized video-- a standard which has been around ever since.

Important for integrating a video games console with "living room" media consumption and for setting the precedent that (nearly) every video games console would follow.

wheresmymonkey4423d ago

Actually the GC did have online play, there was also a version that had a DVD player, although there weren't many about.

But i would say Online play wasn't much of a facotr as both the Xbox and arguable the DC were much more capable online machines since both did i out the box.

Aside from that, you pretty much nailed it.

the only thing i'd add would be BC, being able to play your old games right out of the box was a big deal at the time and something no other console had been able to do previously.

Microsoft hadn't fully established themselves as a competitor and entered the race too late, and nothing else in the market offered the gaming experience that ps2 did. It wasn't any better of a console nor were the games of any higher quality than the ps3, it just hit the market at the perfect time

AceBlazer134423d ago

We didn't have people money hatting every nook and cranny of the industry so it was good clean competition back then.

Sigh gens 4-6 were so awesome compared to 7th.7th gen was good but it felt like it was missing something.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle17d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments
