Has Facebook Doomed The Oculus Rift?

IM PLAYIN takes a look at the recent acquisition of the Oculus Rift by Facebook and asks if it has now doomed the VR tech.

"There’s a strong possibility that it will become some sort of ‘social media’ monstrosity, where you can see your Facebook timeline in Virtual Reality (God know why that would be appealing). Perhaps they will bring back the old ‘poke’ system, but allow you to run up to your friends avatar in a VR Facebook Matrix world and punch them in the face … who knows. All I know is that, if they were to take that path, it would be a horrendous waste of the Oculus Rift’s potential. If there’s one thing that I do know about Facebook, however, it’s that the guys behind it aren’t stupid and they know how to make a buck or two. They will know that using the Rift as a Facebook add-on wouldn’t make them any money, it probably wouldn’t even make back the $2 billion they spent buying it in the first place. Nope, Facebook will have bigger plans for the Oculus Rift than that."

They used to say that any press was good press. I think that XBone proved that maxim to be dead wrong. This is bad.

If Zuckerberg can spin it and show what amazing tech it will be and show it as a gaming system, then it might do well, as a product. If not, it will not. No one wanted to play mobile games on their TVs, Ouya.

Now, no one will want to play Mafia Wars on VR.

It isn't a good thing to have bad press. Especially about this.

M$ was behind FB's OR's acquisition. Believe it or not.
Just like with Kinect, (PrimeSense approached Sony first but they got denied) http://n4g.com/news/569064/...

M$ invest on what is trends because they lack the creativity & originality to innovate.

Oculus Rift on the hands of FB & M$ is Kinect Milo Natal 3.0 in the making.

Silly me, all those articles about FB buying OR had me thinking FB bought OR. When in fact it was MS using FB like a puppet... Yah, don't remember seeing any of those articles...

SniperControl4435d ago

Do you remember the time when MS offered Zuckerberg $15 billion for Facebook?

annus4435d ago

Ah yes, let us all think back on the revelations of Sony. Eyetoy, Move, and now Morpheus. Maybe look at the amazing innovations such as PSN, trophies, and PS Home. All totally original ideas.

It's not a secret that companies such as these follow trends to make money, there is a reason why FPS took such a big turn when CoD4 became popular.

rdgneoz34434d ago

The original Eyetoy was for the PS2 and Morpheus has been in development since 2010... Trophies were because people apparently need little shinnies for playing a game (achievements), instead of just enjoying a great game.

As for PSN, free MP (at least on PS3, though the free games across 3 systems justifies PS+), no paywalls to access F2P games / netflix /internet /etc...

annus4434d ago

I wasn't saying they are bad, I've purchased all of their hardware (yes even their crappy controller keypad), and I was a member of PS+ on day 1.

None of them were original or very creative though, they ALL existed prior to it in some form or another.

First Wii U is DOOMED! Then it's XBONE that is DOOMED! Now Oculus rift is DOOMED!!! DOOMED!!!!

SpiralTear4435d ago (Edited 4435d ago )

The only "doom" I want to hear about in gaming is the FPS series. Sadly, that's not the case with many articles on this site.

stragomccloud4435d ago

But! We should start hearing more about it in the coming months!

Francis24435d ago

I believe that if you pre-order a copy of Wolfenstein the New Order you'll get a beta key for the new Doom in the box. That's if you didn't know that already, of course.

What about Doom the DOTA2 Hero?

That's fine. GT7 would overshadow it anyway at it has open wheel and regular cars.

Should have been spending their time updating Squadrons with better resolution, frame rate, haptics, etc as there isn't a game like that on PS VR 2 yet.

But it's EA. They don't think.

Babadook71102d ago

I agree. It would sell better on PSVR2 right now.

Knushwood Butt1103d ago (Edited 1103d ago )

A wasted opportunity, but I don't buy EA / Codemasters stuff anyway. Grid Legends just came out on Plus and I haven't touched it. Why would I when I have GT7 and PSVR2?

Abnor_Mal1103d ago

Not into F1 racing, but still a missed opportunity.

ApocalypseShadow1103d ago

That's where opportunity presents itself that they could offer something else that other developers haven't offered yet. Yeah. There's No Man's Sky. But a space game with a story would be great. Like the old days with Colony Wars.

Abnor_Mal1103d ago

Exactly, they could have possibly lured more players just from the inclusion of a vr mode.

I miss Colony wars and G-Police, Low-Fi I hope will scratch that itch when it releases. We also need a vr War/Starhawk game.

Knushwood Butt1102d ago

Just watched the trailer of Low-Fi. Most definitely on my radar.
