Sony Dev: Studio Affected by Layoffs Fine Tuning for the Better; Comments on Morpheus PC Support

Yesterday Sony Computer Entertainment Europe confirmed layoffs at Evolution Studios, Guerrilla Cambridge and SCE London Studio, and many wondered about the reasons for such a move. Today NeoGAF member DemonNite, who is known to be a developer at Sony and in touch with the situation, gave a bit more insight on it, also giving some info on what would happen to first party games if Sony decided to support PC with Morpheus.

"Exclusive “first party” VR software though will always stay on PS4 obviously, which I think could be a game changer."

I certainly hope so ...I'm not interested in Morpheus if there are no good games for it where VR makes actually sense. PC support would make me instantly buy it though.

scott1824436d ago

Project cars supporting it is a good sign I think...

hellzsupernova4436d ago

same here! if pc support is announced i will click buy on newegg with my current pc build that is in there

Majin-vegeta4436d ago (Edited 4436d ago )

Good to hear.

I've always wondered why no one has ever asked Demonnite if he can spill the beans on some games in development.

@abriael fair enough.

Abriael4436d ago

He's asked every day. Multiple times a day. He won't give precise data, because he can only say things that won't put his identity at risk. If sony catches him, he risks his job.

Volkama4436d ago

Pfft it's Sony, his job is at risk anyway! ;)

lonelyplayer4436d ago

Actually is because the nda agreements. It can ruin his life forever.

Omar914436d ago

@volkama- that was a good one not gonna lie lol

Volkama4436d ago

Ah so it's the good kind of layoffs. That'll make the people out of work feel better then.

Majin-vegeta4436d ago

Your_________ knows no bounds does it??

morganfell4436d ago (Edited 4436d ago )

Volkama, instead of being sarcastic just realize those people out of work already feel better. They are released from the shackles of work and can now pursue poetry or painting.

But the reality is if you are not carrying the load then you are dead weight and need to be cut away.

Volkama4436d ago (Edited 4436d ago )

Please clarify what that ______ means? I'm genuinely curious, as I do not know any rude words that fit your sentence.

FlunkinMonkey I live in the fairytale world where I have been through redundancy myself, and even as a consumer I have some degree of empathy for the guys losing their jobs. Consumers will be "happy to see them leave" without knowing anything of them? Speak for yourself :|

@Angeljuice You are quite right, this is all quite typical in business. I'm not saying Sony are doing anything out of the ordinary here.

@FlunkinMonkey again, no your point didn't fly over my head. I'm not stupid, and I know this stuff happens. No sob story from me, I landed on my feet and I am doing very well for myself thanks. Honestly my initial comment was meant to carry some irony, but nevermind.

insomnium24436d ago (Edited 4436d ago )

Ummm... they would get fired either way if Sony goes under so it's a no win situation for them. How is Sony supposed to recover from a decade long decline other than doing stuff like this?

FlunkinMonkey4436d ago (Edited 4436d ago )

Wow Volkama, the meaning of my comment just flew past your head there, yes? It was meant that as a consumer, the product will not suffer, and that therefore benefits us.

I was asked to relocate job wise as an Audio Engineer a year ago, which just happens to be one of the hardest industries to re-locate.

So how about you spare me your sob story, because I know that this world isn't just rose pettles and kittens.

It's a shame they lost their jobs, but if they are that high up within their creative practice, i'm sure they won't have too tough a time finding somewhere else to hone their skills

I'll say it again, get your head in the real world.

Sounds like you need to get your head in the real world there, mate. What kind of a business would you be/own if you needlessly kept employees on, even though they were damaging the business/product.

In a fairy tale world, everyone would frolic in job land, with all the other employed people, dancing in the garden of employment.

Sadly it doesn't work that way.

Sorry to see them go, but the consumer is likely to be happy to see them leave.

Angeljuice4436d ago

It's like any job, prove yourself invaluable to the company and your likely to be saved from redundancy when it comes time to cut out the dead wood.
Nothing against the individuals involved, but from time to time it's necessary to streamline any department.

scott1824436d ago (Edited 4436d ago )

I read the article and couldn't find anywhere that he suggested it was good that people got laid off. Are you trolling? I read that Sony was far to big and needed to downsize to become a better run company all around, and it HAD to happen.

Many companies do this, I have been laid off twice by big companies in Denver and Salt Lake City for the same reasons, Have you? Instead of trolling and presuming what someone thinks about a situation, maybe you yourself should step back and show some compassion and understanding.

I also like how you make a snide remark "Pfft it's Sony, his job is at risk anyway! ;)" And then pretend that you care in this comment. What a joke.

BOLO4436d ago

Where the hell are the moderators at now?! You guys strip my bubbles for pointing out blatantly obvious XBONER's who troll thinking Sony is going under tommorow!...They're not going anywhere.

I missed talking about all the hoopla surrounding the recent layoffs news that has affected Sony the past few months & although i think it sucks i don't think it is the 'doom' a lot of people think it will be. My reason is look at Naughty Dog for an example.

Way back Naughty Dog saw the departures of their founders & if that was news today everyone would think that Naughty Dog was closing. However with the right people in place like Evan Wells & Christof the studio is striving more than ever becoming one of the best studios.

Game media & gamers look at Sony made games under the microscope more often than other developed games. We expect a higher quality from Sony cause of their reputation in the industry for delivering on that quality.

Am i worried that so many prominent names from Sony Worldwide Studios have departed, a part of me says yes but another thinks it's not the end of the world. There are still many good people all over Sony's 1st party studios that are able to deliver that high quality that we are so used to from them.

And with Morpheus on the way & the huge interest it is receiving since its reveal i expect more good things from Sony as we move forward, cause after 20 years in the business should we gamers expect anything less from them.

04STIBluByU4436d ago

Funny story...I got to use Project Morpheus the other day at my school. Richard Marks himself was there to demonstrate the PS4 and Project Morpheus and tell us a little bit abut himself and his team and what they do at Sony also I got to try it on, first hand. Its a really neat VR but its still in infancy stage. The product needs work but it was a cool moment! Best day at UCF so far!

Are a bunch of games, some of which are nearly 10 years old not one being from 2026. Barely one from 2025.

I do like the irony of the closing paragraph though, "Why VR Adventure Games are Thriving". Really buddy?

mooreneco2136d ago

That’s because it’s his favourite VR adventure games thus far, a great game always a great game regardless of age - Half life 2/ Ocarina of time - are old but still among the greatest games of all time. The irony of it is several are from last year, depending on platform, have you even played VR?
